My work is mainly pencils. I didn't draw more than a few rough sketches in the past nine months, that's what first love does to you. Head's clear now though.
I'll reward myself with a tablet if I continue with persistent work and move to digital, but for now, I have to finish that Loomis book I own.

A very nice start you have there! I am sure you will get more replies when you get more active- you seem to have some solid experience in this, are you/have you been to art school, are you selftaught or hobbyist?

I always love to see pencil work, as I use it the most as well. I like your straight lines when shading and defining form, especially on the sheet with the basketballer.

I have more sketches I did at home, but scanning them all and uploading is so tedious it's overwhelming... but I'll try my best with the next batch, man, how did I ever consider being an engineer? lol!

Decidedly I needed to update with what I have thrown up on some slips of paper before the dreaded work time - so, enjoy, and let the sketchbook thrive into infinity!


One of those is the mnemonic self-portrait, guess which is the one. Next time, a real self-portrait (using a mirror and stuff).

Nice start man.

Your pencil work is already looking great. Texturing and shading with pencils has always been a struggle for me. Which is just another way of saying I should probably be drawing something right now lol.

Have you ever heard of Glenn Vilppu? If not, you should check out some of his stuff sometime. He's a damn good teacher when it comes to learning form and drawing three dimensionally. His stuff completely changed my understanding of drawing. And it your hands it could be dangerous. In the best possible way.

Anyways, keep it up man, can't wait to see your progress.

Here are a few updates, I had a few nice opportunities to sketch people on the bus. Bought two new sketchbooks, one is small and the other is a little bigger- both with a pretty black cover.

I used pixelovely.com a bit yesterday for some of these, I really like it and the girls they have in their gallery are pretty good looking.

I agree, the pencil style is awesome. Very impressive shading and feel to them. I think some of the faces come off a little flat sometimes. Maybe check the proportions and do some additional value work on them. I think the best ones you have are the ones from the "My Tiny Sketchbook" page. They have a LOT of character (hell, all of yours do). You certainly are not in danger of making all your faces the same. Keep up the good work!

Hello!

Nice sketching, drawing from life is good practice! Try to do some cleaner and more finished work from time to time. Makes you think more of your lines and design. You also eventually get used to a complete drawing process, first laying down the general idea, adding detail, finalizing. It's not a bad idea to use the same kind of process for anatomy studies and the like.

When you do studies, try to really absorb some knowledge from it. Don't just draw from reference, take mental notes, measure proportions, build a drawing system in your head. Helps a lot with working from imagination and can't hurt observational work either.

I should be more conscious and really think it through a little more while I work. The best for me is to start doing these life drawing sessions. Thanks for the kind words kitfox!

Well, so far the week's been great. I work at a chemistry laboratory (it's really temporary), and the pressure's been building up all week but I still used every little free moment I had to draw. I know I could've drawn a lot more, and I will.

Today there was a little artistic festival in my city, with many "booths" with artists impersonating situations and characters, some food stalls and also two caricaturists - whom I watched for about half an hour. I really liked how they worked so smoothly and made their money relatively quickly (their 8 minutes work is my one hour at the laboratory! ha!). It also seemed to be a show, one of the caricaturists managed to interest the crowd with jokes and draw their attention to stay for longer.

Anyway, a bigger update this time, but not as big as I'd like it to be.

p.s- i suck with markers, esp. these brush like tipped pen thingies

I also agree about the young and learning how to draw. It would be interesting to see if you can teach them the 'right' way to draw - teach them how to see before they get the association with symbols.

I hate scanning A3 pages, maybe I won't do that anymore because it's darn uncomfortable with my A4 scanner. Hell! It just doesn't fit!
What a busy week it was, working for 12 hours straight twice this week in this godforsaken laboratory. I wish to go Freelance, illustrate and draw and draw and draw and draw. But how do I do that? Is it even possible for my talent level?
I should definitely do something and not just talk and hope.

I did promise a self portrait, but it didn't come out as I wanted it to because it barely resembles me, oh well!

Is it possible to get a few pointers as to what should I improve? What's really wrong with that ? Except that I think my face is wider than what I drew.

Plus I added one more doodle, I always liked warriors (half blinded by the night lamp I drew this).

Nice updates! For the self-portrait, I tried to draw you as well. I was thinking that if I did that I could give better critique. XD However mine failed horribly so I say you did it very well haha
You could have made some tones darker to have more contrast.

Hey, nice work man There's a real strong sense of fun in your stuff, make sure you don't lose that.
Three critiques, but I am trying to do this super quick
1. Spend more time on your studies. You're doing art for yourself so put in the effort and push the studies to a finish level. The same applies to your work from imagination
2. Clean up your lines. Make sure every mark you put down counts for something and think ahead about what you're doing
3. Do more studies! haha, a bit of an obvious one but you need to do more anatomy studies and stuff from reference. Mostly portraits, absorb that stuff and use these studies to work on your weaknesses

-> Sushy: That's just flattering as hell, thanks! I think I blushed a little when I saw this, you definitely handle things more smoothly it seems. Look at my wild lines, it only feels random that they create something together, doesn't it?

-> Nibras: Thanks for the comment! I took your advice regarding anatomical studies and i'll try to keep works cleaner, although it's really hard not leave a mess behind.
Regarding finish levels, yeah, I really have that problem and will try to polish some future works. Let's see what Sunday will have for me, or today's night! Hahaha.
Also I'll try to take some of my pixelovely studies and high polish them, see what comes out. I'm really trying to capture the pose of people (women mostly since they're so fun to draw).

Anyway, some studies from pixelovely with varying times (60 seconds is fucking hard!), and a single pose I conjured from my mind.
All with an HB pencil, hooray!
