What lighting/shading works best? I was going to have light coming from all the eyes but it would get too complicated visually.

kurios I'm partial to the first version - in the second, the light washes away too much of the character, and in the third, the light doesn't seem to radiate out at a natural angle.
@Khalo, thanks. The top one was the first I did but then I started playing with options and wasn't sure.

Coming late to the party so probs wont have time to finish, but wanted to post an idea's wip at least... thoughts?
Always strive for perfection. You will never achieve it, but will learn so much more in the striving.
Thanks Khalo
Okay, quick last wip and posting in the final burning.

Junpei: I'LL DO MY BEST!
Quinn Simoes:
Obacmar: I like the mecha-ish design.
Sir Patroclo: Love it!
Paolo13: Looking very interesting.
Sarmati: Badass. Not really seeing the healer aspect though...
Today's update, gonna try and complete tomorrow cos Sunday is a busy day for me. I rarely finish these things in time.

Okay, here's my archangel/lawyer. I'm trying out the "pen is mightier than the sword" saying... possible lightening/sparks from the pen... Thoughts?
Rachel Pierce - yours is looks really nice. the detail in the wings on her head and the rendering of the face is awesome. crits maybe her neck feels alittle strange atm.
Sarmati - nice designs on the armour. only crit would say is the flame thing cool idea but it feel quite hellish instead of heavenish.
kurios - i like the idea with the wings and the eyes. i think the first like works best.
Fallenangel - i like the colours you got going on in that. maybe push the contrast alittle more might be good.
Jamesbiff - i really liking the layout of the image. only thing i would say is maybe her hips feel abit weird atm.
Quinn Simoes - awesome as always man!
joey pistone - nice character man!! gaint weapons are always cool lol
hala havnt - talked to you in awhile. real nice start on this.
Pixeltuner - nice design man!!! really like the way you taken it.
strangedawn - the armour looks really good in this. not so sure on the wings tho.
MatejaPetkovic - really liking the start. cant wait to see how it develops man.
Paolo13 - really cool idea man!
loving the topic! been messing with mine since yesterday. found it really hard not to go to illustrative with this one, with trying to get healing/protector and warrior fighting aspects in ther. anyway some crits would be cool.
I don't want to post too many variations on here, so please check my blog for some color choices- http://whatakuriosgirl.blogspot.com/...ng-colors.html

Just an update with color. Really awesome pieces coming out!

- NEW Portfolio- ------------- ---------- ---- - SketchbooK- - ------------ -----------------
Ruri - the basic idea I had was to create a really pissed off angel charging to the fight through a burning field, and wherever she stomps a grass and flowers spring from ashes.
No87 - yeah, I guess it looks a bit like a fire elemental.
Quinn Simoes - your style and colours always blow my mind. this piece reminds me of a mix of Royo and Kotaki. Sweet.

An update fixed a lot of things, probably my last wip next one will probably be my finished piece, now I have to finish my art history essay-.-! I like what I see in this thread!
Done, hoooooray
BLAHBLAHBLAH
Update. Getting increasingly tired and unhappy with this. He doesn't really look like an angel warrior at all and I can't seem to pull off the foreshortened armor on the leg.

I think I'm almost done. Any final suggestions? Do we need a background or does that just help? (I'm thinking just clouds and giving the appearance of descending maybe?)

Hello people! decided to dig in this cool topic..
Hope I could finish it in time... I hate rendering![]()
Getting a late start on this due to other obligations. Here is my thumbnail so far:
Edit: I'll give a critique to as many as I can after the upload.
Critiques:
eralfralos - I like the idea, looks very Amazonian-eagle warrior. Watch your stroke economy. I think it might be cooler to bring the body closer to the main character's glowing hand. You can probably just silhouette the foreground sword and give it a rim light.
Kurios - Peacock inspired? I like it! I kind of wish there were more shadows and highlights on the figure just to give her more form. If you add a background I think keeping her floating will look cool.
Dcritelli - Don't give up! I actually like the armor on the leg. I think if you want to emphasize the warrior aspect you could give him a little more bulk. Also, the pose is a little awkward. Is he levitating? He sort of looks like he's being possessed. I would like to see his right arm (with the sword) coming forward and pointing down, like he's commanding or banishing something.
Deadlyhazard - cool concept, looks almost samurai-influenced. His halo is sort of getting lost from his electric wings. It'd be emitting light too right? So there should be highlights on the helmet showing light is coming from above. Just a quick thought.
no87 - That looks great so far! One thing I'm noticing is that the bloody mouth of the wounded is completely getting lost in the angel's dress. Maybe you could throw some of the yellow from her halo onto the blood's contour? It's mostly the victim's chin that's lost.
Fallenangel - I really like your brushstrokes and highlights. The facial expressions seem a bit strange though. What are they both looking at?

Feil Magnus, just a heads up b4 this goes into voting, you might want to connect the right leg of your character to the body, atm it looks like its either floating in mid air or sprouting out of the sole of the other foot.
Some general criticism for other people, remember that this is supposed to be a character concept art competition, so your supposed to be showing what the arc angel looks like, i see some entries where although fantastic illustrations, due to the angle or perspective, it doesn't show the character well.
I am particularly loving the creativity behind those who didn't go with the conventional angel. I have an awesome idea for this but I won't be able to get one done in time having only just got the internet after moving and working on another larger illustration.

Well I'm working on this
I toke the idea of healing of the bible when God say to moses that he must do a brass stick with serpents to save his people, he said that any one that see to this symbol will be healed, it is also the symbol of medicine.
I'll try to finish the grayscale ant start adding color today
Thanks for feedback guys!
Pixeltuner< nice character! n unique style u got there.
shadow1687< cool armor! maybe you can make it closer to the viewer so we can see more details.
my progress..i'm slow at rendering..
wip for my concept. I kind of enjoyed the pose, done without referance. Gonna flip around, make it bigger, ad a background in digital. Still, I may not be able to finish on time, but it was fun playing with the idea.
Great entries and i'm really jealous of many awesome plate armor designs.
Trying to boost my shadows/contrast. Not sure if it washes out too many details though.

kurios Yeeaap. It definitely washes out the face too much. And the wings. I'm much more fond of the left.
First post ever in CA! I saw the topic and couldn't pass up the chance to at least doodle something. I am overly fond of drawing wings and winged beings. Oh, forgot to add the weapon and healer's rod, lol. Input is much appreciated, though I'm not sure if I will be able to finish in time to submit my final.
ETA: updated pic

I don't think this one will make it to poll, but I had fun working on my Archangel. Inside the briefcase are all the contracts that people sign with God. The quill pen is red with blood for that traditional touch.
OooOo there are some awesome goodies going on in this thread. I'm really enjoying the ones that have more of a "modern armor" look going on. And I give credit to all who are painting plate armor because that definitely is not easy.
Decided not to submit--after working on this it became so bland and not really a character design at all, and not enough time before deadline to redesign/salvage. (I have a better idea now how to approach ChOW though). Thanks for help and critsI will wait for the next ChOW.
