Red face Good Old Graphite Pencil Drawings - Dac's Sketchbook, Enjoy

After a long break of several years, I recently resorted again to pencil drawing as a relaxing hobby after a tiring day's work. Hope all of you who will visit my SB will enjoy at least some of my posts.

Also, any comments, constructive critics and recommendations of any sort are more than welcomed. Please only bare in mind that my drawings are based on self-learning and that I have never attended any art course other then a 4 hour class in a weekend some 10 years ago, where someone showed us how to sketch a cube

    Classic car

Drawing the car took 2-3h, the background (paved road) took 2-3 days

Ohh I am sooo jealous of your art tools!

I think you've got some really excellent work here. I guess it depends on what style you prefer, whether it's more towards photorealism or conceptual, etc.
I think you have a great understanding of facial proportions.

I'm not experienced (self taught too!) but I really like the drawing of the english car!

    @ Maria

Thank you Maria for the kind comment,

The car is from a picture of down town Bucharest (please see bellow), I intend to draw more similar. As for the pencils, I started collecting them several months ago and I ended up with a shopping mania :-s... soon to realize that a need a very big shoe box to keep art tools which, some of them I honestly don't know how to use

Do look forward to see some of your work!
    All the best,

Hey, thanks for stopping by my sketchbook,
you've got some good skills and it doesn't really matter if you self taught or an art student...what makes the difference is the hard work that you must do to become a good artist.
I would suggest you on making some more of those Loomis studies that you started,
i don't know what sketchbook you have but get one that you can carry around and try to draw whenever you can and whatever you can, it will really push your skills and your understanding of how things work and interact with each other.

Keep up the great work with those studies and sketches.

    Alex.

Nice start on your sketchbook. Like you I'm also self-taught.
A tip I can give is when shading larger areas you could use the side of your pencil, this gives a nice texture. This way can cover an area easier and you can then use the point of your pencil for the details.

I like how you started the portrait on post #4, the shading could use some more work though. Are you working from imagination or reference?

Keep studying Loomis, reading his books and doing the exercises will really help.

    Keep up the good work!

    @Rustveld @Fallenangel,

    Thanks for the tips!

I will stick to Loomis for the time being, however I would like to try some concept in paralel, it's much more fun. Unfortunatly I have very little time to draw... meaning now I also have to do speedsketching where usualy I like to take my time. Anyway, I'll post as often as I can.

For the shading I'm now using those pencils without the wooden layer, however when I drew some of the above I didn't had them around.

Some really nice drawings here, I think the buildings are very cool, the later portraits are really good too. Do you draw from reference? If so where was the topless woman walking the dog!?!

    Thanks Dayle,

Most of the drawings are made from referances, however I don't pay to much attention to the background details in my sketches. The topless woman is walking on a road in the original picture and has two dogs not one.

Very nice sb so far. I think my favorite among these sketches is the motorcycle, I love the dynamic angle.
Just keep doing what you're doing! Draw from life but also try to draw from your imagination, gotta keep that creativity and fun going.
On a more specific note be wary of your figures, they're very stiff and lack movement. Try to get more 'flow' in there and weight.
Here are some figures done by a famous animator, Glen Keane. His figures (though simple and quick) have an incredible sense of flow and weight. He's a constant inspiration to me (though drawing in that fashion often leaves me without the patience to finish some paintings ;3).

Anyway I hope this was useful to you. Thank you for your kind words in my sb. I hope to see more from you in the future!

Thanks Dana for the advise, I agree some of my work is rather stiff, and is something I'm working on to solve.

Now back to some Loomis. One of my constant problems is drawing turning or tilted heads from different angles... so I'm focusing on that as well
