    Mushroomworld WIP - still learning

Okay - I did my first digital painting like yesterday - see my sketchbook.
And I want to learn how to do digital painting, so I decided to start with this old drawing of mine.
I'm probably jumping in the deep end here, so any comments, suggestions and help will be appreciated as I post these WIPs.

Well let me just say first off that your drawing looks great. Digital painting really isn't much different from painting normally. One of the best techniques that I've learned is to do a quick black and white underpainting to start with (on a separate layer usually). That's where you'll solve a lot of your major issues as far as value is concerned, and that's really the only area I think you could improve on so far. Other than that, I think you're headed in the right direction.

I think its going nice so far. I love the line work. But i think the depth coloration in the picture is lacking.

    Thanks for the comments, folks.
AlbinoFox - good point - I'll try the black and white underpainting next time - I did try it here with brown, but maybe i did not use enough contrast - I'm just scared that black will dull the painting.

Candra - I've added more depth now using blue to push the background back - dunno if this is what you meant.

Next WIP: I'm trying to do kind of a sunset over the mushroom field with the planet in the background bouncing blue light off the mushrooms - damn those 'shrooms get boring after a while

hmmm.. i just cant figure out if thats a girl or a boy on the dragon?? it looks like a nerdy harry potter with glasses but i see boobies as well im confused.. im going to my room now....
not bad for first try.. maybe add some environmental effects.. fog?? textures?? give it some depth.. and think about changing the dragons color.. its only a suggestion.. putt down the uzi and we can all be friends..

    putt down the uzi! ahhhhhhhh..........

If you do the underpainting on a separate layer, you won't have the dull problem. That way you can put your dark color values over the black and it will vanish beneath.

Don't be afraid of black. Sharp contrasts can bring out a feeling of drama very quickly and without too much effort.

I agree with SeXzNinja about maybe changing the color of the dragon. To make it stand out more from the mushrooms. Or changing the colors of the mushrooms for the same effect....

And I really like the drawing too!
