Trevor Smith(Artfix) NEW and improved portfolio

Hello all--welcome back from my old thread or welcome newcomers...

I've improved over the last year and I've moved past a lot of my old work, I'm glad to say. I'm very proud to show these new images. I welcome all comments, questions and critiques. I even welcome an exchange of critiques--just ask!

I'll be posting in the portfolio critique area soon because party time is over--I really want to get a career going. I hope to do fantasy/sci-fi book covers/cards or concepts for video games. So...here is my latest; all of these were for Chow and one was for Cow.

    Hi Matey

As expected I love what youve done here, and am a little envious as I expected ..... Sigh!

However that thing with the boobies, I dont know what you were drinking or suffering from but that was a serious bad dream Man !! If I saw things like that in my dreams I would try not to sleep any more Lol.

Love it mate post more, so I can learn more from your examples, sketches etc. anything reallly.

I have noticed that you take your time commenting peoples work and give constructive crits, that's cool!

Thought I'd take a peek at what's going on in your portfolio. I like the style.. it's crispy and sharp which looks very good but at the same time my eyes desire some smoothness to them. I don't know how to explain it any better and I'm not sure if it even bothers me really. Now that I think of it, the beastmaster painting has just the right amount of smoothness and crispiness for my taste, but it's just a matter of taste really. It might also be the case that the pictures that you post are quite small in size and some of them contain a lot of info. How large canvas do you usually use?

I myself should focus on getting some more crispiness and textures to my paintings because they are to smooth. Anyway looking really wonderful, good luck job hunting.

The hag creature with hanging titties looks really annoying.. I like it . That fast moving dagger slasher and the four horsemen are also my favorites

Hey guys thanks for the kind words. The hag with titties was a CHOW called Rangda: Rangda is the demon queen of the leyaks in Bali, according to traditional Balinese mythology. She has dangly titties and long dangly tongue lol.

I always use 300 dpi and I range from 12 inches-15 in so thats like 4000-5000 pixels on average. I am constantly being asked to tighten my images for projects I've done which I find very frustrating. I think there is a lot more to a painting than how real it looks. And in my most recent work like the Dreamweaver and the Beastmaster, I've been using oil-mimicing brushes and trying to leave it looking painterly which I'm really liking.

Wow this stuff looks cool. The only major crit I have is your higharchy of definition is all over the place. You know blurry stuff on top of defined stuff on top of blurry stuff or jumpy values and chroma. I can see a struggle in your work flow. Maybe if you started working on less busy pictures and focused on economy then you can go further. Limit your brushes and color pallet or hatching on each peice. I'm sure you know this already, I'm just saying know it harder. Because there are minor details that are ruining otherwise great peices.

Okay I'll just bring up the two indian peices.
The Giants look good accept the hatching. It's out of place in the economy of design you have established. There could stand to be less crumbs of earth and shit falling from his feet too. It sort of kills the rhythm. This is just subjective, but the indians you threw in the foreground for scale are a bit paint by numbers. if they were to interact with the environment a bit more, they would feel more apart of the scene. I've seen a bunch of big name artists pull this kind of shit. So I can see why so many artist follow that lead.

The wolf and warrior peice looks good, but the value jump you put in the eyes and mouth is just uncalled for. It makes an otherwise cool peice hard to look at. Once again opening a fresh can of worms, when you shouldn't. If you are going to introduce a new value, you have to balance the rest of the picture with it. It's always good to draw the viewer in, but not because something jumps out as being odd. You should have payed more attention to the wolf's eyes for making them so contrasted. The eyes are googled and crossed. You'd be better off darkening and obscuring them. The contrast just doesn't belong.

A good finish is as much about the detail you leave out as it is putting it in.

Your ideas are fantastic and I really enjoy the gestural feel of your work. It feels alive. However, I think you could push your colors and lighting a bit further. It feels like they need a definitive direction.

The character's poses and overall scenarios hold such energy to them, but I think it becomes a bit downplayed when the color and lighting don't work to support the overall theme.

Great work, I look forward to seeing more.

    Hi matey

I really enjoyed the process on that spaceship crash when it was in the w.i.p. section
it was good to see, I like the mech pilot too.
I think the thing I like most about your work is the fact that you can see a little narrative to it, the story is so important in these things and a lot of folks should come here and remind themselves what it is that makes an image work.
I am so fed up of static poses in the W.I.P. section with no life to them and no story, ITS JUST BORING!!
anyway enough rambling stay well, and thanks for posting all this stuff my mate its both enjoyable and more than a bit inspirational too.
