I'm working on character design. If anyone had any pointers for a aspiring character artist i would love to learn as much as i can! I graduated highschool in 2010 and since then have started seriously considering character illustration and graphic design as a career. I do mostly sketches on my sketchpad (meaning not much digital art for now)

my favorite character artists are tetsuya nomura, shunya yamashita and hyung tae kim among others.

Here's some stuff from class.I need to work on getting myself a real camera though because for now I only have a webcam, sorry. I'm also going to post one or two pages of anatomy study I'll do later tonight.

For these I used color pastels,some marker, and the black and white one I used charcoal. I started using conte crayon at first but then I realized the charcoal was alot more practical to use since It takes less effort to smudge....heh

Im studying a bit from an anatomy book. (Dynamic figure drawing by hogarth) and i was on the chapter with feet.

I did a couple pages of feet sketches but since my scanner isn't going to scan them all i'll post some old work too

even though this is a sketchbook, I think adding more of an element of entertainment I guess to my work might help get me to the next level. I'm gonna try and get this to where its fully colored. but its almost midnight and i want to post my progress so far before the day is over so here ya go

I think her arm needs to be a bit longer now that i think about it proportionally. i need to redownload the drivers for my tablet so I'll be able to ink my drawings in photoshop and not with a regular pen.....hmmm

I was without internet for awhile but I"m working on some character work as a concept artist for a jrpg. heres one of the characters

Good start. I don't really know the anime style too well, or should I say, I don't know how to suggest developing your style as I dont draw study that approach. However, try going to some life drawing classes and draw from life, try using some different qualities of line too.
I think people who start out/focus souly on a very stylised approach miss a something from their artwork, try get lots of solid foundations in varied diciplines of sketch/pencil/tonal work.

EDIT: also if you draw intial image in blue pencil, and go over it later with black pen, the blue lines (if drawn lightly) don't appear in the scanned image.

Thank you! I'll try to draw more from real life. I've been trying to get away from it by studying anatomy.

and i like the blue pencil idea. my bro always tells me to do that. I should do it so my stuff will come out more neat.

nice work! keep it up, but try to focus on lots of studies. go get an anatomy book and read and draw through it for example, paint some still life paintings and such. keep it up! i'll be sure to come by again!

I think you're off to a great start. The girl in post #12 is my favorite I've seen from you so far. Simple lines, simple color but you captured the expressions very well and that makes them interesting to look at. If you want to do character design for a living then there's no way around learning and studying anatomy. I think some practice on perspective would help you a lot as well to make more "interesting" poses and your friend won't say they are "boring" anymore I really like the varying costumes you've put on your characters.

If you want to do this for a living then all the foundation work you put in now (anatomy studies over and over and over again) will all pay off HUGE later on. Keep it up!!

Hey, I got some advice over on my sketchbook yesterday that could be useful to you as well regarding your figure drawings.....I am also taking a figure drawing class starting next week so I'm trying to soak up as much knowledge as I can so I can get the most out of the class.

I like that last study you posted, good start on some basic drapery too. Definitely check out what dierat said to me about constructing the figure!

^Thanks! I tried some studies today and before i knew it 5 hours flew by. I'm thinking about switching over to photoshop though since i feel kind of limited with a regular sketchpad @.@

@blueflies Thank you blueflies!! I took a look at his critique and I kept it in mind while doing today's gesture studies. He really is right about focusing more on the contour rather then the lines. I really want to work on making my characters look less stiff too. a stiff figure really kills character art ):

These are Studies for the Crimson Daggers contest I'm entering. The task was to try and redesign the cover of an old arcade game called Gauntlet (I've never heard of it before.lol). Tried to work on composition here. One on the right is suppose to be a cross but I don't think the Horizontal and vertical areas are clear enough for it to be considered a "cross" composition.
The composition to the left is meant to be an "L" composition.

It's good to see the switch to more observational studies. Your personal work will definitely benefit.
I have a couple crits/suggestions. When you're doing your figure studies, think about your line a bit more. You have a tumble weed of line work in some of your figure studies and it works against your drawing. Maybe think about how you can describe the lighting environment with your line work alone.
Also, with your graphite drawing in general, it looks like you're smudging your graphite a little bit. Some people say that's OK, but I really don't think it works all that well with pencil graphite. If you want a work-around for that, get some powdered graphite and brush it on instead of smudging pencil graphite. It looks way better.
Anyways, keep it up!

I'd like to say, concentrate on a more specific topic to train, but on the other hand it's propably irrelevant what you draw, as long as you draw A LOT!

@lemmingclone Yes, it helps. Eventually I'd like to just draw people (because character design is what i want to do) but illustrators should be well rounded, so, I wanna practice everything o:

yes i'll focus on the line. thanks for the suggestion about powdered graphite i always thought the bad smudging was because i didn't use a smudge-stick or something ): but getting powder graphite to smudge sounds kind of fun and more practical.

but anyway, I think i'm going to do a mega-picture upload about once a week from now on. I'll draw everyday but i won't upload them until thursday night. spending 2 hours scanning,resizing, and properly responding to comments everyday just isn't practical @_@, so i'm reserving it to one day. (if that doesn't work i'll change of course.)

@shockowafel thank you hun i agree, i should probably just stick to humans but as long as i keep drawing at least I'll establish some kind work-ethic/work flow. that's important to me right now.

I remember reading somewhere on these forums that the more value range you give yourself to work with, the more things will 'pop out' so i've just been trying to do that. something that's been a problem for me for awhile, has been how my stuff appears too 'flat'. but yeah...that's what i've been working on lately.
