Things that make you feel old.

Thinking about where the internet was when I was in school makes me feel old.

-There was basically no streaming of ANYTHING online.
- No such thing as netflix
- "On demand" in general wasn't invented yet
- Internet was basically for Usenet (haha, who uses that anymore?), Chatrooms, Geocities, and Porn. Even Message boards were just barely starting to make a dent.
- Flash had just come out and of course everyone was losing their minds with the next level websites. Sadly, some people still think this is a good idea, but I digress.
- Downloading..ANYTHING...took days as Bit Torrent had not been developed yet.
- Social Networking did not exist in any form unless you count the previously mentioned chatrooms, usenet, and MIRC. Not really the same thing, though.

So...it makes me feel really old to know how many tools young artists have nowadays at their disposal. WHEN I WAS A BOY (old), it was pretty much only books, books, more books, and classes. And the only critique I could get from anyone was basically at comic conventions only.

Ha! I met my husband on Usenet.

We were in the first wave of 'civilians' allowed on the internet. Before I was let onto Usenet, I had to read a statement that basically said, "you aren't wanted here. Behave yourself, because we're just itching for an excuse to shut you out."

I was so intimidated, I didn't post anything for two years.

Yep... I definitely remember that sound! During college (mid-80's), we thought that the greatest thing was to be able to connect up to our computer server using a 300-baud modem on a IBM-PC Jr. (my roommate was rich). To be able to type up your paper and send it to the campus printer was amazing. You had to place your phone receiver into the modem cradle to get the connection. Sometimes, it wasn't a good connection, so, you just pushed the phone down harder.

Surfing the web was a matter of hitting numbers for pages (no images). That was on bitnet and arpanet.

That was only 25 years ago... not that long ago.

I still hear that sound at some ATMS.

But, yeah, I had dial-up all through the nineties (and beyond). My parents used to get so pissed because I'd be clogging up the phone line for hours cruising BBSs. Then they got call waiting and I'd get so pissed cause I'd keep getting booted off when I was in the middle of something important (like a three hour download)!

These days its only special editions that give a little something extra. It used to be a given.

Anyway, I'll start.

I saw Pokemon the first movie in theaters.

Same here.

I had sent a drawing to a magazine contest because the prizes were tickets for the film.
The morning of the release I went to my mother to ask if she could give me a few francs (currency before euros) to get a ticket, to what she just said no.

Next thing I remember is I checked the mail and found a free ticket with a crongratulation letter.

Getting woken up to watch the first man walk on the moon when so many of you weren't even born. Still think Space Invaders was fun to play at 10p a go. Being older than one of my colleague's mum. Policemen look like they should still be at school.

I don't feel old, but, when I remember 1993 like it was yesterday, when it was...wholly shit I just did the math!

When I think that I have spent roughly a dollar at a 5 second monotone ring of Sex and the City and that was cool.

When I think that I remember a time, where 90% of the cars on the streets were Ladas, Moskvitches or Zaporozhets.
When I think that a mate in kindergarten had a computer with a version of DOS on it and that was pretty rad.
When I think that instead of snowboarding, the cool kids used to use one of those short, cheap plastic skis.

When I think that when I was a kid I was dirty, dusty, scratched up and outside. And that was ok and in no way a sign of careless parenting.

These are all almost twenty years old: Batman: TAS, Star Trek: DS9, The X-Files and Jurassic Park
I listen to Steve Wright's non-stop oldies and sometimes I hear stuff from the charts I grew up with.
They fit a whole Sega Megadrive in a handheld doohicky now. I'm still amazed by the leap to 32-bit.
People talk about streaming tv shows and movies and I'm like, what - did the local Xtra-vision burn down?
For that matter, stop talking about blu-ray too. I've only just got used to DVDs.

I remember a time before, when 8 year olds went out side and did shit. And weren't bothering people with all sorts of swear words on Xbox Live.

Honestly. I realize that I spent the majority of my days outside of my house with friends doing random stuff, hitting stop signs with slingshots (when slingshots were cool), setting off fireworks (was cool too i guess). Racing on our bikes. Just did whatever was good at the time.

-Remembering when gameboy color was a big deal
-Remembering when Poke'mon stadium for the Nintendo 64 was an even bigger deal
-When games came in those bigger packages (still have the Star Craft Brood War box somewhere)
-When game manuals actually gave helpful and interesting info on the games, usually stuff about enemies, guns, back story, etc.
-When the concept art in games was WAY cooler than what actually appeared in the game
-Watching Dragonball Z on Toonami when I got home from school
-Watching Ed, Edd n Eddy, Dexters Lab, Cow & Chicken and Cartoon Cartoon Fridays
-Remembering grunge and college rock
-The internet still made that awful dial up sound
-Being on the internet meant no one could use the phone (thank god that was fixed before I hit puberty)

I'm only 21, but:

Seeing my 2yr old and 4 yr old nephews pick up ipods and iphones and ipads and just USE them instinctively and realising that buttons are going to be archaic to these kids.

For christmas when I was.. maybe 13 or 14, I got a gadget that looked like a Game Boy Advance but it played emulated games and VIDEOS. Videos on a handheld, can you believe that? Now I can stream videos from the internet onto my phone wherever I am. Everyone can. It's no big deal, it's just something we can do now.

Midi ringtones just aren't relevant anymore

The 90's are as far away now as the 80's should be but aren't.

When I remember those days when my countrymen weren't eager to go to war about anywhere on the planet.
When I remember those days when people felt genuinely sorry for the refugees who had suffered torture and persecution (today they are considered to be a swarm of hungry grasshoppers wanting to leach on the welfare system, who breed like ra ... sorry, rabbits, while plotting to destroy out culture (as if we had one ...)).
When I remember those days when there was some sort of solidarity, instead of the liberalistic dog-eat-dog utopia.

ultimas been so great ... i think i played ultima6 for a year untill i solved it.

im feeling particularly old when im watching my cousin handle a computer (hes 18 now). eventhough im the person my relatives ask, if they got a computer problem, i got nothing he did >.<.

played my first computer game on a c64 at a friends and the first computer we had at home, been a "laptop" with monochrome screen that weighted ~20kg. played prince of persia on it for quite a while.

Computers had cassette tapes instead of floppy drives.
And when computers got floppy drives those floppies were huge.
Music came on those big black disks. Later on cassette tapes.
People who had a walkman were awesome, though a new I-pod nano would probably fit in those about 100 times.

TV had little wheels you had to turn to tune the channels.
When you bought a video recorder you had to consider VHS or Betamax. When you had the money to buy one that is....

Oh.... portable video games... those small things with only a few positions for the character to appear on screen. Only one game but could play for ages.
