    Red face Futuristic Market, (updated)

Hi, I know the idea of futuristic Chinese markets have been done to death but I wanted to try my hand at it and see if it turns out as cool as the others I've seen in the past.

(I changed the picture at the top so people don't have to scroll all the way down to see my updates)

Have another look at the underlying perspective - it plays a huge part particularly as you are rendering structural objects here. I think because the ramp railings dont diminish in size properly as they would in perspective, it has a flattening effect. Also the curve of the ramp near the bottom is not true - it would be way wider here to give a solid structural appearance.

I like the trees in the foreground but the background trees are too similar in size and shape. But you've done a beautiful job on the shops, they look nice and interesting

    Just my 2 cents

Thank you so much for your help! I can see what you're talking about now and it does flatten it up and I agree with you about the background trees. I was thinking of maybe clumping some together. I'll be adjusting that later today.

Some form of perspective would help with this - having things flat only acts as a visual 'stop'.
At the moment the ramp is taking the focus away from the shops (the ramp and fish tank are our focus).
Once you've got some perspective going on, lead us into the image using repeats (scaling - repeat the fish tank, or add some lights - decreasing with distance, or people)

quick scribble (not 100% right but still - I mushed up the perspective on the atmosphere image):

Oh wow! You went above and beyond what I expected from a crit but it is GREATLY appreciated. I really like what you've done with the perspective and I never thought to do that. For some reason I get caught in the idea that if I'm designing an environment I have to show the entire thing in one picture. What you did is take the most interesting aspects of the environment and condensed them and it still works and even better than the original. Thank you so much. This was very very helpful and I really appreciate you taking the time to sketch something out for me.

Colour overlay? you need to break up the colours, don't just use the same one (blues, greens, browns) - using the same colour for both the tanks is flattening your picture. It's a tough ones with them both being lit. Unless its a coloured light the closer with be clearer.

Thanks for the reference picture. I actually was using that one a little earlier lol. As for the colors, I wanted it to be a warm scheme with a blue contrast so I was worried about breaking it with other colors. I was told you can only have two primaries in on picture so I tried to stay with split colors since I already have blue. I'm going to try and fix it though. Thank you again.

no i was going to say nice work so far but i didnt want to offend i'm new at this whole critique thing... to be honest i suggest you refine more. right now the image seems milky or soupy to me but i would suggest more defining edges of separate objects so your painting doesn't blend together

Oh lol. It's ok. If people put a WIP up you better let them have it. I'm happy to get crits. So thank you for telling me my picture is soupy, lol. I'll try and work on it.

    another update

Ok so I added more color and I set a shrub in the center. I also tried to dull down the back tank and I added a few more things to make it look a little more interesting.

Lol real fish of course. In Quelquefois Town we pride ourselves on our poor fish size to tank ratio.
