    Aother Environmental Disaster

Over a million sardines were found dead in a marina, after getting trapped in there and, apparently running out of oxygen. I don't know the overall impact of this disaster, or world population of sardines. So far I can't find any other news on it.

This is another of those mass-animal-death-stories in recent months.

But, probably not a disaster for any critter in the local ecosystem that likes sardines!

An omen? 2012, Mayan Calendar, end of everything. . .

    . . .or not!

Well the whole "oh god all the animals are dying" thing has been blown out of proportion. These mass death things aren't uncommon, the attention they get is a result of slow news days. I had some gov wildlife organization that keeps up with these things and it has a chart of all the mass deaths. Can't find it again.

I mean eventually the mass death of People becomes old news right?. I don't think there CAN be a slow-news day if relevant things are being reported.

    Wheres the media reporting this?

Oh wait they are more fucking interested in Charlie Sheen to do that.

Pretty much most of the stories in the big news sites are all about Charlie Sheen.

It's not really a natural disaster, fish get trapped in marinas and asphyxiate every so often, it happened in a marina here a few years ago. It's terribly sad, but not due to anything sinister.

Ugh. Tell me about it. It's as if nobody's ever seen a celebrity trainwreck before.

I always ask myself what global disaster or something of the like is going on when they over hype the life of a celebrity. I figure this [Charlie Sheen] is a ploy to take our attention away from what has been going on in egypt and libya etc.

anyway didn't mean to take the attention away from the sardines or derail the topic ;P

There's a LOT of sardines out there! For example (via http://www.tourismsouthcoast.co.za/e...eFestival.aspx, my emphasis):
Each year an unbelievable feeding frenzy takes place in the oceans of South Africa as billions of Sardines migrate up the Kwa Zulu Natal South Coast creating a unique and exhilarating experience for divers, bird watchers, whale watchers and anglers.
Considering the number of sardines that are fished just for canning every year, a dieoff even of this size is statistically insignificant. According to the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch site,
Sardine populations appear to be abundant and healthy and are a "Best Choice."

This LA Times story, which was linked to on the Yahoo page you posted, seems to cover everything.
