Sooooooo, it's been a while, again. I graduated. Which feels great! Now I can paint. I've said that the whole time, that when I'm done, I will paint. All the time. So far it's been working out better than expected. Coffee is my friend. I've painted all my awake time for the past two weeks, and I feel I've eliminated a lot of bad habits and some rust. Now time to study even more! I've recently stopped using opacity when I paint. It helps with a lot of things, mainly it helps me figure out what I "do know" how to paint, and what I can paint thanks to a series of "happy accidents". Some of those series I see as habits, I've developed them through un-careful doodling and sketching, and they have slowly but surely made their way into my work. Right away after stopping to use opacity I started to see value patterns a lot stronger. I can tell from just looking at work done from months ago that I wasn't paying attention.
Anyway I won't rant about recent discoveries or epiphanies...I'll let the work speak for myself in the future, instead.
Right now I'm doing the E.O.W over at CA.org. It's supposed to be a collaboration with who ever you choose to work with.. I started mine out with James McCrory whom I don't think own an account here. However, he had to leave for a few days, so after we had finished sketching and finalizing our ideas, I took over and I'm now working on the final painting. This is where it's at now. I've had so much fun with this piece already, from the very beginning when we were just coming up with ideas and doing problem solving, to the very late stages where I decided not to use textures or fancy overlays for everything, but rather take my time and paint everything in (using 99% hard brushes from the original photoshop brushset =D ). I usually tell myself it's okay to use textures, and I also assure myself I *CAN* actually paint it and that I'm just saving time. I think that is true most of the time, but I also have to remember to actually do it, especially when there are no excuse not to, like here. Right now the only textures that were used, comes from our early thumbnails and sketches, I also used a texture for the pipes in the foreground.. There are still bits of pieces left from that stage. Except for that, I'm proud to say that I've taken my time here, and will continue to do so through-out the painting until' I'm done, or deadline forces me to be so.
