    regarding blender and paint overs,

the most important thing for concept art is to communicate visually. sure, there are standards in terms of minimal drawing/painting ability. but really there are no hard set rules in terms of work method. each niche of the industry wants different things. i think you just have to figure out what you want and where you wanna work. knowing those 3d skills might actually be a really good thing if you want o work mostly in games. Doing the paint overs can be desirable to a lot of companies because it allows the final work to be articulate and can also provide a rough for the modeler to work on top of as well.

Plenty of guys will use 3ds, sketchup, or some other program to do/start their enviornments. and as far as i know that is acceptable practice. As long as its not a restriction or a crutch then its fair game IMO.

Whether you drew it or modeled it, you spent time and effort in the creative process. In my opinion its only cheating if you stole the idea or the work was done by someone else. Short cuts and effeciency are two different things.

    Good work, keep it up.

WOAH so many replies! thank you guys so much for visiting haha it's so nice!

Mikko Voipio - Cheers man, haha the carrot monster, its just a carrot shaped blob that i rendered the shit out of for kicks, a bit of fun :p

henri - Thanks! i am trying to get more expression into them definitely, thanks for noticing! it's one thing i want to be able to do, have interesting expressions in everything one day. thanks for coming back

Fetsch - Hey man TY for the comment! bit of a morale boost coming from you ahah! much appreciated

theUNKNOWNsketcher - defdef more, thanks. i'll keep it up just for you buddy

Aryeh - Thanks for the comment! i'm glad you think that, and it sounds true to me, it doesn't matter how you get to the finish as long as it fulfils the requirements for the concept. i think that workflow has definite potential and it is actually quite quick because i'm only using big blocks for the composition. thanks for the reminder about google sketchup too, been meaning to check it out! cheers!!

Tawnos - Thank you! i'm still not happy with it though, gotta keep it up so i can be one day, hopefully!

-D_art- - Thank you and i will. haha thanks for stopping by.

PieMonster - Cheers man! buttt i'm totally jealous of your linework. want to trades? glad you like the stuff i do though! and ty for dropping by and saying hi.

OK, so here is a few things, ummm.. first up i have some figures i did from my head, inspired to do something for the no ref figure thread in the fine arts section (they are not very good though). thankfully i'm doing a bit of life drawing now so i can hopefully improve. second are some more doodles from my head. Then we have a couple faces from internet ref And then everything after that is study from life! yay!

Very nice figure drawings and portraits, as usual! I'm really liking the little boy dressed as a soldier on the previous page. Are you going to finish that?

zathraya - Oh Thank you! that soldier kid with the ak? i'm not sure if i will go back to that one or not, it's possible. but i'm not really planing on it. if i did i think i would change it quite a bit. thanks for the comment!

Velocity Kendall - Thanks for coming back yeah, iwas kinda pleased with the simpleness of that one haha sometimes simplifying has the best results, maybe because i don't spend so much time on it and ruin it hahahah

cricketts801 - Why thankye very much. glad you appreciate it

ManHands - More Digitals! ...yeah, you're right. i will post more digital work soon i feel, just for you . but i feel like i want to get everything down first in pencil. like so i can understand what i'm painting when it comes to it. Thanks for the comment!

Pencil dump again (BORING). got some from life drawing that i'm really not happy with. i was not feeling it at all that night. then some scribbly scribble pages.

Those figure studies are looking great, very nice use of values there too. Your latest painting looks ace, very impressed with how you handled the motion of the main figure, very convincing.

cgaddict - Thank you, i tried to make it look natural. hopefully it's not a stiff pose, cheers

project_razor - Thanks! haha it's just how i naturally make these quite clean, but i'm a HUGE fan of the painterly look. i just prefer to do it this way

OnkelJoe - Yes! and i will do many many more studies. it's always good to be improving. thanks for the comment.

here are two from life drawing, couple doodle pages and a new WIP i'm still far from finishing, its just really rough and the figure down the bottom makes no sense at the moment haha. any comments or crits on it so far would be awesome. especially composition ideas.

Great piece this last one. Giants arm look more like a small child's arms though. Short and stubby. Is the soldier gonna protect himself from two hand blow by the giant with his shield?

    cricketts801 - Thanks!

Mikko Voipio - Cheers for the comment and crit! i think your right about the arms, although i didnt change them. this giant just has stubby arms :p and the soldier.. yeah he's pretty much doomed. last ditch effort on his behalf maybe? i dont know what he's thinking but no way will his shield do anything haha

    Final? probably.

Nice work on this giant piece, though one crit that I have to offer is that I would definitely try and refine the edges. At the moment they are so crisp it clashes with the smoothness of the rendering within.

Otherwise great work! Really nice job on the chase above, though I would agree with VK about the persuers, that or adjust the position and scale of some so they don't appear to running in rows.

Velocity Kendall - Thank you so much for the crits and ideas! your so right too! i'm going to change that picture and employ your ideas! cheers! thanks for taking the time to do that. i was kinda stuck with that picture and as a result just called it done. but those are nice finishing touches

MacTire - Thank you so much for the crit! that is another thing i should work on, the crisp edges are a result of the way i abuse the lasso tool to make the silhouettes first and render out the middle bits haha but i can go over them afterwards, i'll definitely try to do that more. thanks!

Thank you guys a bunch for the feedback thats the kind of thing i like

Here are a few poop studies from today, not copied from ref but i looked at ref for the effects i was trying to achieve. focused on the clouds mostly.
