P.O.W.! Challenge 48
Deadline: Sunday, March 6, 2011, 11:59 pm anywhere in the world.

Topic: Kite Warrior...

The name's the best I could come up with. Sorry. What we're actually looking for here is someone who uses a non-powered flying device to "fight" or compete. I'm talking kites, hang gliders, para gliders, etc. The fight can be a competition between kite fighters, or a story about military/crime fighter/"heroes" who use such vehicles to do their jobs. For the sake of the story, I guess we can include "wings" that attach to the body in some way, BUT THEY CAN NOT be powered in any way other than by basic wind/glider methods. [Because I screwed the schedule up with my on-line problems, you actually have a bit more than three weeks on this one. Don't wait til the last minute...]

You can interpret the art any way you wish, and the more creatively, the better. Any media. B&W or Color. We're also going to stick with the (almost) three-week Challenge period for a while because it seems to be giving people a bit more time to play.

You can present your solution as a minimum of TWO to a TENTATIVE maximum of SIX pages which adhere to standard comic specs as below...and, yes, you can have the first or last (or both) as a splash page if you want. You can go to additional pages without asking if you have a decent idea that requires it--just don't get too extreme on page counts.

REMEMBER: You don't have to have a complete comic to qualify for polling--if you're idea requires six pages or so, go for it, but if you realize you're running out of time, try to get at least TWO finished by the deadline. That's all you need to qualify.

Standard Comic Book Size:

--Trim size: 6 5/8" x 10 1/4"
--Live art area: 6" x 9"
--Bleed size before trimming: 6 7/8" x 10 1/2" (1/8" in all directions)

Question for POWers: I'd like to adapt part of a book I read. It would be an original adaptation, but the idea and some of the text would be borrowed. I'd cite the original source. The story is great, and I'd really like to try my hand at adding a visual dimension. Is this allowed?

as long as you make it youre own. i don't see why not....as far the text being borrowed huuuummm i don't think so.....for me one of the hardest parts of p.o.w is basically doing everything on your own.... if i had someone too right the story for me......well my entry's probably wouldn't suck so bad!!lol!

I know this is stupid, but I don't understand exactly how the "standard comic format" part is supposed to work with a web submission. If I do all the art by hand on paper or illustration board, I can make it the right size, but then it's too big for my scanner (although I guess I could scan it in sections and then stitch it together). If I work on it in photoshop, don't I need to set the dimensions kind of small to be able to upload it here and still meet the attachment manager guidelines for file size?

Please have patience with me--I'm a newcomer and don't know what I'm doing but I'd like to take part in this!

I think the format is more of a general guideline than a requirement. And the proportions are more important than the actual size. As long as your comic looks readable and nice I don't think there will be a problem.

Posting your art:

Post each page in order as a separate jpeg at 96 dpi, properly labeled as noted above, 10" inches high (this is to allow you to use the attachment function, which will only allow 10" high images). If you host your own images, you can post at actual size.

boop. page 2. first shot at this comic thing. all went well until I realized I didn't make space for the text bubbles. but I squeezed them in there, next page I'll plan them into the composition, and maybe make the text smaller for all the pages in the final rendering (?). More pages soon. Hooray for weekends!

Questions- is there an easy way to make panels in photoshop? I just migrated to photoshop from gimp, and suddenly don't know how to do anything!

Oh, and this is an illustration from the book Turtle Feet by Nikolai Grozni, while the final "book" will be an adaptation, all the text from this page comes from the book. I don't really mind if this is DQ'ed

Zy: One easy way is to make a rectangle selection and then do Edit>Stroke. I think adapting a book is a great idea. You won't be DQ'd.

How I do panels is add a new layer filled with white. Select the area where I want the panels within, then deselect using alt+left click where I want the space between the borders. Then invert the selection and click delete. Then right click on the layer and select blending options and click stroke. (Makes a stroke around all the non-empty areas of the layer) Also set the layer to multiply, so the white won't be on top of your art. Works great for speech bubbles as well.

Oops, I guess I'm really not going to make it. I loved the concept and thought of a great story arc (well, one I was excited about, anyway), but basically ended up writing and planning it, ending up with eight pages of thumbnails and no finished pages. Then I had friends staying with us this weekend, so that's the end of that. But, I do now have something I think is worth finishing, and the reference photo research along the way inspired an idea for a different project, so I want to say thanks so much for this topic!

Waterbird that is one damn fine set of finals. The sepia tone really suits, makes it feel like DaVinci's notebooks.

I won't have a final for this one. There's a Sci-Fi con on here this weekend & I've been working on stuff for that.

Wow--thanks for posting your finals, waterbird. They are gorgeous, and I agree about the sepia. I love the thought-out explanation for how this works, and "pull you up like a church-bell rope" is such an evocative phrase! I also love the way the three small panels at the bottom of p. 3 open out onto the full page 4--it really gives this feeling of soaring. My only questions would be, on the top of p. 3 I find the way the old man's (Leonardo's?) kite overlaps and then goes behind the boy's a little confusing--if they're not literally in the same space maybe putting the old man in an inset box could make that clearer? Also, in panel 5 it took me a moment to understand that the figure attacking the boy was the old man, even though that was what the dialogue suggested--I had to scroll back to realize he had put on a hood earlier, and it wasn't a different man with dark hair--maybe make the hood a more distinctive shape? Both minor points--really a lovely piece.
