sketchbook, live forever or die trying

Hello, I am 18 and I’m from Belgium. I found this site a week ago and from then I lurked every day in the forums and saw some amazing stuff. Because of this forum I want to draw again. At the age of 15 I drawed a lot but after a year I started to do other things and stopped with drawing.
Now I decided to start again and I started this sketchbook because I hope it will keep me motivated to draw regularly.

I always loved to paint with watercolour. And I love the work of Alan Lee and John howe.
My goal is to be able to paint as good as them so everybody that can help me can always give me advise how to practise.

    this I made when I was 15

This is a studie I made yesterday

Sorry for my poor english. I use a translator, if you do not understand something better explain.

Measure with your pen widths and heights. For example, with your pencil vertically measured from the eye into the nose, so you will not go below one eye or mouth to the right.

Wrinkles and contour in general if you are trying to make a realistic drawing should not be. The outline is an aid that uses the artist as a guide but in reality does not exist. You can leave a boundary, but not so marked and reviewed as you left.

I marked it with red what I write here and also the correct form of the skull.

I appreciate your help iruko, I know my measures and proportions on some drawings aren't right but the skulls and the woman faces are my first drawings in years so I think I did pretty good. I just need to practise some more to get the anatomy right.
I know that the wrinkles at the old man are not good drawn. But that was an drawing I made a few years ago and now I know you don't need to draw the outline.

The third womam face I find terrible drawn and I think I will correct it with your advise.
thank you to take a look to my sketchbook.

If you are the first drawings of your life are good, my drawings seemed made for a 5 year old.

I told you I saw things that went wrong, so be improving faster. If someone says where failure will see before your mistakes and you can attack before.

Well, it seems like you pay great attention to rendering, though your underlying understanding of anatomys letting it down a bit. I know everyone always says his name, so you'll probably already know of him- but I have two links on Loomis which might help you.

    http://www.scribd.com/doc/255814/And...Figure-Drawing
    http://www.scribd.com/doc/501782/And...Head-and-Hands

They take a while to load, but they're great for helping you find ways to understand proportions.

Anyways, just keep working at it and I'm sure you'll improve quickly. Keep up the good work.

thanks for comment Naidy, Im irritated the failure on anatomy ruines my drawings so I will practise on that, thank you for the links I will try it.

edit: wow those links are just amazing Naidy thank you verry much. I love how loomis explains all proportions and stuff.
I will first make a horse drawing for my little sister because she is asking it for 2 days already so after that I will studie the human proportions with help of your links. If you have any more of those amazing links you can always let me know.

Well, I think what helped me in the beginning was to nail the proportions and drawing first, then worry about the "rendering". If its off in the drawing stage, its going to be wrong no matter how beautifully you render it.

I like the armor! Your shading and details are very nice. I got the same problem with measuring... I always dont want to draw help lines first. I think if you would spend a few minutes in a "helpline-skelleton" and take a look on comparing sizes of the mainparts of the drawn subject, your upcoming stuff will get to another great level. But don't take my comment as a must have. It's really most important to have fun during the drawing process!

    Keep on posting!

thanks for the comments, chaser and surus your so right. I don't spend enough time to check if my drawings have the right proportions and measures. So now I will take a step back and gonna first improve my basic skills.

Yes! Studies! Always be doing those studies and you'll improve in no time!

Try to draw from life as often as you can, too. I find that that helps bring a little more movement and life into each drawing.

Keep it up man! You'll do great

I'm really impressed with the warrior rendering in your first post. I am on the same boat with proportions, only diff is your drawing and posting more than me lol. But the way I see it, you keep putting stuff down, analyse and learn and grow, nd I like what I see. Defo onto something, Will be coming back for new updates

Some great work here! Just going to echo what everyone else has said - your rendering is great but your proportions look off. This is fixable; learn the proportions by heart from Loomis and practice them everyday, keep at those studies! Good luck!

Well now! I'm happy I could be of help, you've taken quickly to the studies too.
Just keep on drilling those proportions in your mind. How many heads tall a body should be, how wide.

Sometimes it's just best to quickly plan it out in basic shapes, just to make sure you have the proportions right. E.g You draw a straight line (roughly so you know where the body will be) then from there, you draw the head, and from the head you make sure the line is 8 heads long, then try to draw the minicins in Loomis's figure drawing book.

TLDR: you're making good progress, just keep an eye on propotion- planning the whole figure before starting will help that.

Keep up the good work!
