    ChoW#230 :: Rangda the Demonqueen

ROUND #230 :: Rangda the Demonqueen

    DESCRIPTION

    Rangda the Demonqueen

Rangda is the demonqueen of Bali. She has a flaming tongue and rolling eyes, and even eats children! If that’s not evil enough, she leads an army of evil witches to fight everything that’s good. It is said the origin of the myth of Rangda dates back to the 11th century, to the Javan queen Mahendradatta. Mahendradatta was accused of witchcraft and was exiled by the king. She returned however, and took her revenge by slaying half of the kingdom through the plague.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rangda

    Design Rangda!

    • There are some interesting rituals and depictions connected to Rangda, so make sure you do some research for this design!
    • Time period and setting is free, but make sure it’s Rangda; use color and symbolism to make this clear in your design. Be creative!

    Good luck!

UPDATE: colour and stuff. Time for upres and detailed rendering I guess.

So first I was like "Yay, a hot demon chick! Woohoo! "
And then I read the description and was like "Aww, she`s old and pruney... "
And then I was like " Hey...saggy boobs!" So I`m back to "Yay! " again!

Quick sketch...and something I noticed. Old witch/hag who`s all scary and eats children/babies....kinda reminds me of this one ...weird how some archetypes exist in independent cultures...

Edit - wee bit of rendering and a color test...this one might turn out to be more complicated than I thought...fun!

Edit2 - Decided to actually FOLLOW the task and DESIGN the character. May not "fly" with people, but it`s so easy to fall into that "OMG must make an awesome illustration" trap. This one is all about Rangda. For better or worse

Edit3 - Done...ish. Tomorrow - weapon and some more work on the final. Time management FTW!

That's the first thing I thought as well: the Baba Yaga resemblance

I figured this Rangda (as depicted in the Megami Tensei series) should be good reference

I feel like I've comitted some cardinal sin for not giving her what Wikipedia politely describes as 'pendulous' breasts. Need to make the face look a bit older, I tried making the cheekbones more craggy but she began to look eerily like Jack Nicholson.

    GEB: Disturbing! I love it.

This was my initial idea for posing, any thoughts? For some reason I can't stop thinking about the shinigami from Death Note

EDIT: Updated the image. Does anyone have any thoughts? The left hand looks off but I can't work out why. Feel free to do paint overs if something needs fixing

GEB: Nice progress. Watch out for going too bright too early on, and the same for the darks. You won't have any values to work with when you start your colouring. Trust me, I make that mistake all the time :p You might want to add a multiplied (light)grey layer on top of it to give yourself some headroom again

School starts this week for me, so I'm going to do my best to be in this competition (and not chicken out like LAST time).
