    Eclectix's Eclectic Works

A bit of everything in here. Sculpture, illustration, abstract art, concept art; most of my work has been done in traditional media, but lately I've been branching into the digital realm as well. I'm going to post a small sampling of my old stuff as sort of a prologue before starting in on my recent work.

First up is an illustration of the famous E.A. Poe, done in oil pastels on heavy paper.

Next is a chess set I sculpted in wax. I then made the molds and cast them in hydrostone cement. After that are a few of my abstracts. These pieces were completed in 2005.

Wow, I love it. Your work is really bold and striking. The Edgar Allen Poe pic is really evocative. The details in the framing and edges really suit that Gothic, heavy feel of his literature.

The Chess pieces look really nice too. If you can get some close ups done, I'ld be really interested in seeing them. I love their shapes, both their general outline and in their detail.

    I'll stay tuned!

On to 2007, a rather productive year for me. Most of my work at this time was done with oil pastels, although some were acrylics.

I'm lumping 2009 and 2010 together; I did a lot of photography in this time but little else art-wise, as I was going through some personal stuff which made it difficult for me to find the time and space to create.

Woaaah, there's a lot of different unusual things going on in here.

That chess set is incredible! Do you have any larger/close up shots? Would love to see them.

What was the Nautilus painting about?

So much in here already, keep it coming!

Yeah, my style covers a lot of different genres. The nautilus one is sort of an expressionistic piece. It is supposed to suggest how ancient the instinct of attraction is, how deeply ingrained in us this thing we call "love" is; it's in our very DNA and has been reinforced over millions of years of ancestral sex through millions of different species.

Anywho, here's a WIP for the latest ChOW contest. The theme is "Steampunk Aphrodite Goddess." I am working to bring out both the steampunk and the Aphrodite, but at the same time I absolutely hate relying on clichéd genre identifiers, so I don't want to use hearts or cupids, nor goggles or lacy hats.

Thanks for stopping by my finished sketchbook and giving my really useful advice and encouragement. You have some great textures in your work. One of your weaknesses I think is your faces. I think you should study drawing faces some more because overall, your proportions look pretty good to me. Even some of your dragons faces aren't drawn as well as their bodies. Overall I like your ideas, especially the last image in post #11.

    Thanks Istmin.

I'm updating with another completed work and a WIP. It has also come to my attention that I'm probably not making best use of this as a sketchbook, since most of my posts are of my completed works. I'll try to post more of my sketches and WIPs in here from now on, and maybe start a different thread in the appropriate forum for my completed works.

    But first, here is another completed piece;

    Name: COW 204.jpg
Views: 970
Size: 350.2 KB

Description: The Violet Dawn Walker, Megokapia quadricornia, is a resident of the perpetually twilight northern land mass of the planet Costatis.

This large creature is the primary prey for the Emperor Dawn Stalker, an equally impressive ambush predator. Because it has no other major defenses, the Violet Dawn Walker has evolved a sense of hearing that is unmatched anywhere in the known universe.

What were ancestrally a simple pair of horns used for defense and display have evolved into impressive auditory receivers. Paired into fore-and-aft bugle-shaped extensions, these specialized "ear-horns" channel even the faintest sounds towards highly developed auditory receivers. The Violet Dawn Walker can create a 3-dimensional model of their environment within their head based on sound alone, and can detect the presence of predators from many kilometers away.

This is important because the Violet Dawn Walker must constantly be on the move in order to stay several kilometers away from their main predators. Only by keeping such a large distance between them can they avoid becoming the Emperor Dawn Stalkers' next meal.

The Violet Dawn Walker uses brilliant purple colored bioluminescent displays to attract small flying orthonestes which nest in its massive mane. The orthonestes provide the service of keeping the Violet Dawn Stalker's auditory receivers free from parasites, and in return they have access to a large mobile sanctuary in which to nest.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    And here is a WIP;

    Name: bioluminwip3.jpg
Views: 960
Size: 146.4 KB

Description (working): The Cloud Leviathan lives among the upper atmosphere of a gaseous planet. This creature can be seen hunting alone or in small groups, and can prey upon creatures large and small. In this image two of the creatures are seen cooperating to trap many small planktonic air floaters in their tentacles by clasping them at the base, forming a sort of dragnet.

These creatures use jet propulsion much the way that aquatic squid do on Earth, and they have an air bladder filled with hydrogen to maintain buoyancy in the dense gasses of the cloud planet.

Also peculiar about these creatures is the fact that they are comprised of two different species working in a complete symbiosis. The front of the animal is much like an arthropod, and it is conjoined as a larvae with a soft-bodied tentacled creature which forms the back half of the adult specimen. So conjoined are these two creatures that their nervous system acts as one, making them a single creature for all purposes. Both species retain their eyes, giving the adult both fore-and-aft vision, useful for hunting, but the circulatory and digestive systems are merged. It is impossible for an adult of either species to live without the other.

Thank you both, Sean and tronrobot!

Another WIP on my latest creature concept. I just realized that there is an artifact on this saved version which is due to some layer shuffling I did; the small blackish spot near the right hand creature's front eye will not be there in the final design, so feel free to ignore it.

And here is the completed "Cloud Leviathans" piece:

The Cloud Leviathan lives among the upper atmosphere of the gaseous planet Opaela. This creature can be seen hunting alone or in small groups, and can prey upon creatures both large and small. In this image two of the creatures are seen cooperating to trap many small planktonic air floaters by clasping their long tentacles together at the base, forming a sort of dragnet.

Bioluminescent organs called photophores cover 90% of their bodies. By controlling which of these are firing at a given time they can create changing light displays of incredible complexity, allowing them to communicate during coordinated maneuvers.

These creatures use jet propulsion to move through the clouds much the way that aquatic squid propel themselves through water on Earth, and they have an air bladder filled with hydrogen to maintain buoyancy in the dense gasses of the cloud planet.

Also peculiar about these creatures is the fact that they represent two different species working in a complete symbiosis. The front of the animal is much like an arthropod, and it is conjoined as a larvae with a soft-bodied tentacled creature which forms the back half of the adult specimen. So conjoined are these two original creatures that their nervous system, circulatory system and digestive system are merged together as one, making them a single creature for all purposes. Both original species contribute and retain a set of eyes, giving the adult both fore-and-aft vision which is useful during hunting. It is impossible for an adult of either original species to survive to maturity without the other.

Reworking my Cthulhu sketch a bit to make it less humanoid looking; I like my Cthulhu to reflect something utterly alien; not the typical "octopus head on a bloated man's shoulders" portrayal which is not really terribly frightening IMO.

Still needs a bit more reworking I think, but it's coming along.

Thank you Rain Walker, I appreciate that. Sometimes it seems like a curse wanting to portray in many different styles, genres, and mediums because a lot of patrons want to know that they can count on getting the same style from you.

    They want predictability.

Well, to Hell with that; I guess I'll hold out for the ones who value flexibility, adaptability, and creativity more than predictability.

Here's an improved sketch of the Morgul Hound concept. This is why I never jump right into fleshing out my first sketch right out of the gate; they always get better the more of them I do.

    Thanks, witcrack. Will do.

Getting that Morgul Hound fleshed out (not quite done yet but it's getting there). It's not quite a dog, nor a cat, nor a bat, nor a rat, nor a mole; it's all the nastiest bits of each of those things.

Here's the finished version of the hound; I changed the name of the creature to the "Ghasthound."

Ghasthounds are all of the nastiest bits of rats, dogs, bats, moles, and cats wrapped in a grotesque package. Clever and resilient creatures, goblins have long valued them as companions for their ability to thrive in the same conditions that goblins thrive in. Ghasthounds have exceptional hearing, eyesight, and smell to assist them in the dark, dank places they call home, and they possess large front claws used for tunneling in the earth. Because these creatures are small and furtive, goblins have been known to train them to perform stealthy tasks such as tunneling into human camps to steal loot. Preferring to beg for scraps over hunting for food, they are not keen on combat and will usually flee when confronted rather than fight. When cornered, however, ghasthounds can be quite formidable.
