    Ahh, a new SB page, it's fitting of the new understanding I'm getting working with the default PS brushes.

    This is my 1-2 hr attempt at working without ref, picking my own color palette (was going for a more translucent skin color - like old paintings, didn't work out too well) and attempting to explore brush strokes. I learned A LOT...what suggestions do you guys have, im thinking it doesn't have enough contrast..but im not sure???

    and yeah i know the breasts are a little off, and they're not entirely round, i'm having trouble dealing with sharp details and creating areas of immediate contrast (such as the ribs)

    maybe i need to use some turquoise, or some greens to make certain things pop? most of those colors were quite analogous

    one more question - do you guys lay out your colors before hand or just go at it and choose as you go? i find myself ALTing colors nearby and as a result it becomes kinda flat.

    Very interesting and detailed pencil drawings you have on the first page
    of your sketchbook. I am amazed. You have some nice skills and patience
    doing such a great drawings. As for the digitals are concerned, you just
    try not to pick the colors from another painting or reference. Try to select
    them as you go. You can achieve better contrast by multiplying the layer,
    and lowering one of the two layers' opacity a bit. If you are confused with
    colors as a starter, then just simply try and work grisaille.
    Later as you get more confident, try setting up an overlay layer over
    your grayscale painting and put on some colors. Time will tell everything,
    you just keep doing studies.
    By the way, on this last breast torso, the anatomy is off. The left side
    of the ribcage, the further part from the viewer is bulged out, unnaturally.
    Hope that I have helped you out a bit. I am not a big expert anyway.
    Hope that you will keep posting more interesting pieces.
    Cheerz mate.

    @artistcaleb - no problem, hope you continue to visit mine, thanks!
    @LtPlissken - thank you, and you've actually helped me more than you might think, and yeah i know it's off..i know where too, but at this point i'm just gonna keep going. Cheers!

    another concern I'm having, I'm using PS's default airbrush and round brush, but my pieces end up looking flat and lacking texture

    My internet was down last night so I couldn't post, I'm trying to maintain an every day posting, but I decided to just up it all in the same load, so here's some new enviros, sketches, etc..

    I'm working on some other bigger digitals and pencils outside of these studies and sketches, eventually I'll post those.

    photo ref for the girl...tried to pick out the colors..ends up looking spray-tanny and fake, shrug...mainly hard round and airbrush..just a quick color value study

    might flesh out some of those environments, WHICH ONE IS YOUR FAVORITE??

    photo ref for the arms - super model arms ;d

    using different pencils and getting a new scanner!!! = better updates

    Really enjoying your work! Seeing pencil sketches is never dull, I like how you transition between different items within the main picture. I will definitely keep up-to-date on your work in hopes of benefitting from it myself! Keep up the good work

    I must confess that the subject matter of your drawings weirds me out, but they're quite good from a technical perspective.

    Dope it's cool it looks like your working a lot on figure models as of late which is something I want to get into but I'm not sure where to get started beyond hand drawings. Any tips on figure drawing and shading? It would be a great help.

    hey sweeps,

    yeah i picked up bridgman's complete guide to drawing from life book on amazon for like 5 bucks,

    i occaionally use the tutorials on this site: http://conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=42

    also other art books you can find here:
    http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=131117

    I also google anything from models, to nude models, etc.. (be careful with that..depending on what you can handle seeing - usually not that bad, but some people are offended easily) or go on deviantart.com and study the photography > potrait and nude section - i used this primarily for value studies, etc..

    i do posemaniacs.com as well + some loomis studies - i have a few .pdfs of loomis if you can't find any..PM me

    ummm, if i remember what else i'll letcha know, but i think that's the best ive found so far

    and the old fashion, draw on the train, bus, use a mirror, etc..

    Oh...and if you want really distorted poses, search for yoga, ti-chi on google, etc.. and you'll get some interesting results

    @FightingSeraph - never heard of him, but wow i really like his style, thanks!!
    @Bethany K. - thank you)
    @trexmaster - haha thanks-

    don't wanna make a post without some eye candy - weird picture i took while in california in an open field...odd eh?

    @Liquidpope - thanks!

    determined to press forward and continue to post everyday! i will not slow down my progress

    i'm starting a new painting as well that involved some of the foreshortening, i'll post the progress soon when i actually get the chance to sit down and focus on it for a little while + more piggy

    but here's a like 15-20 study of foreshortening - reffed a few, i'm EXHAUSTED, school started today

    There are a few talented artists out there who have posted their skin tone charts to share with everyone, have you used one of those yet? Just since you mentioned skin color up towards the beginning of the post.

    A couple I know of are
    http://navate.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d2efaai
    http://rahll.deviantart.com/art/Skin...8468?offset=50

    Obviously there's more to it than eyedropping each swatch and slapping it on as is, but it's a far better start than trying to use the color selector every time to guess which shade to start out with.

    A good thing to remember, that I'm still trying to successfully implement myself, is that skin has so much more to it than just the basic shades of peachy tones. The environment around the subject casts colors on it in both highlights and shadows.
    As for things looking too airbrushy... I'm not sure on advice since I tend to have that problem often myself. I've been trying to eyeball how other painters approach similar subjects and lighting, and figure out how they make their figures so sharp and well rendered. So I've been trying to render some sharper edges in my paintings like with rim lighting, to see if that helps any.

    One of my bosses is supposed to start giving some digital painting tips and technique tutorials at work at some point soon, so hopefully I'll learn something towards this kind of thing from him to pass on :]

    Your study sketches are looking great though!

    Your graphite works are looking very well rendered, I'd love to see you traverse into the world of paint!

    @Myszt - WOW! thank you! please share some of those techniques with me when you learn them i'll def be using these swatches! cheers
    @SWeePs - depends on my inspiration, and time factors, but i attempt to get in atleast an half an hour a day, maybe 1 hr? or everything from just studies to drawing in my notebooks before class starts, etc.. or just plain doodling..draw every chance you get!! recently a little less due to school and such, but i plan to do more,
    @Hanny Honeymoon - thank you!!
    @kiwigarbage - i appreciate the continued support and thanks! i'm glad someone finds it interesting
    @dylstew - haha
    @charishomes - start drawing right now and you'll be able to!

    Alright, so school is really draining me, but! I have a few things

    Picked up ZBrush for the first time today!!..this is my first real attempt at a render, awful i know ;/ and some other random thing i thought looked interesting, shrug

    worked on a little more of piggy, too tired to really put forth a good effort

    a new concept in progress very very rough, like 5th grader 5 min gesture rough - gonna rework the whole thing, just wanted to get the idea down while it was in my head

    I WANT MORE TIME TO PAINT!

    and some more studies - the drawings will be uploaded when i finally get my scanner, say next monday or maybe as early as this friday - trying to get down a more dynamic figure - i really need to do these less tired, my lines look like shit!!

    and here's a like 2 yr old old scan i found, with those bic pens, buncha eyes!

    oh and an old idea for a basic poster..thought it was cool when i was like 16

    anyway, i got school tmrw, and some work i gotta take care of it before i go to bed.

    cheers

    I'm jealous of your shading haha, like on the mushrooms I like the cross hatching and how the shading gives your work texture at the same time. The eyes are also a great example of this, keep it up!

    Sweet!

    alot of good work here. Gotta love the piggies lol i actually play the guitar, i do program drums though for my guitar lines. I mostly like the drummer from Avenged Sevenfold(The REV), the one from mudvanye, and mostly death metal drummers like bands Winds of Plague, Born Of osiris, or human abstract. Great inspiration listening to them in art and music. Cant wait to see more posts!

    @SWeePs - thanks! i love pen, i need to do some more of it in the future
    @Joe777k7 - the rev is amazing, i'm probably the biggest fan of Daney Carey, i love dave grohl, drummer from smashing pumpkings, and proceed as well, have you posted some of your work online? i'd love to hear what you're workin on, and thanks!

    Well, scanner came in today, gotta set it up then i'll scan in more drawings tonight, but here's a small little update

    first nude modeling session in my figure drawing class, here's some 10-15 minute gesture sketches, was on 18x24 newsprint with vine charcoal...would finish in like 8-10, and have no idea how to really achieve detail with that medium, anyway..

    i'll be updating later tonight with more digital, pencil sketches, etc.

    edit: wow..i just realized how small some of the legs are on these pieces..ugh, please rip these to shreds, i wanna get better asap

    Hey

    i see what you mean by construction in your drawings. I think you need more underdrawing going on. Like make sure all the proportions are right. Like scribble draw sloppy, it doesnt matter. Just work at it till the proportions are right then once you see it, erase everything slightly so that all that is left is anomlies(faded lines), then you will have a clear picture of what to define and leave out. I learnt how to do alot of this from Riven Pheonix in his anatomy vids. He says that when you do that it leaves more of a finished feel to the work when you are done. But i know that when your doing life drawings it can be hard to focus on things at times. Great job on the post though. Dont worry about the comment on my page, your not being an ass at all. It was very helpful what you wrote. I been having alot of people tell me that about the conrtuction of people. I think it mostly refers to gesture drawing which im starting to learn now lol I had alot of people comment on posts i did that were just liuttle brats and smart asses. Youll get alot of that on here. Im not sure if you meant samples of my music, if so you can go here. Im alot better now but havent put anything up in two years. This stuff is from two years ago lol

    http://www.myspace.com/pansyk7

    this is the one i did with my wife. She did most of the vocals and i did the instrments lol very fuuny stuff

    @Joe777k7 - you're welcome, and i do need to show more construction lines in class, i'll work on that, thanks! and the giggafalseteeth piece made me smile, haha really funny, and solid drumming btw on all tracks, how long you been playin?

    Well here's some more studies over the last day, day n a half? My scanner situation is giving me some trouble, have to send it back, so i'm stuck with more shitty uploads

    have a set of icons i did..gonna up those soon, trying to learn some more Zbrush as well, but i'm really swamped for time as of lately

    but please, tear up my recent stuff!!!

    EDIT: wow the scanner sucks and really doesn't like the pencil i'm using

    Wow, really impressive pencil work! I can see we derive inspiration from similar sources. Seeing and experience! Keep it up, would love to see more. You play in a band? I saw drums!
