    Sketchbook dell'Aria: Updated 4/24

I've been lurking around here for awhile, but I hadn't mustered up the courage until now to actually post. I'm 16 and self-taught aside from the usual high school art classes. My New Year's resolution is to improve considerably by this year's end, so any advice is greatly appreciated!

    Hope you enjoy my work

wow, you have great rendering skills so far. you seem to understand photoshop too, nice paintings! It would be nice to see you experiment with textures keep doing studies and see if you can apply it to stuff from imagination!

Your rendering skills are impressive, but there are some structural problems in those portraits, especially on the guy. His mouth is off center and his nose looks like it's been pasted onto his face. There's also something weird going on with the rendering there...like his nose is burnt or scarred or something. Try flipping the pic horizontally. I also think you could have pushed the contrast on that one. Otherwise, your stuff is pretty good, especially for how young you are. Keep it up!

Nice start! Your strength is absolutely rendering, get other fundamentals up to par and you'll be deadly.

Thank you all so much for your inputs thus far!

viki oh: Thanks! I have experimented with textures before (I kind of abuse them, actually haha) but I usually save that for my more refined works. Maybe I'll start using them in my studies, too.

    smael:
Thank you! And you're English is perfect, don't worry. (: I have plenty of paintings from imagination on my dA, but I attached three personal favorites of mine.

    FourTonMantis:
Thank you for your honesty. I will add highlights to his nose. I think that may fix the problem because, as it is now, it looks like it's under a different lighting which gives it that "pasted on" effect.

Here are some finished paintings I've done. The first one was modeled first in Mudbox (it was my first attempt at 3-D modeling) which I then took into Photoshop and painted over.
The second piece is probably the first environment I've done that I actually like, and the last one is a painting I did earlier last year of one of my characters but still remains to be one of my favorites.

Here's another environment I've been messing around with. I'm probably going rework it a little because it's not as I imagined.

yo man~ saw your awesome entry in this week's chow and couldn't help but notice your awesome use of colors you seem to have a great understanding with it~ really dig your work and i commend you for knowing how to 3D model!

hmm.. the only thing i have to suggest for you now is to study more environments/landscapes and your characters will have something even better to be enveloped in ^^d. keep up the great work man! and good luck with the CHOW!

I'm having a bit of an art block lately, especially with environments. Here are a few rough concepts, but I can never seem to motivate myself to finish them. Any suggestions?

On another note, I'm liking how this WIP is turning out so far. The story behind it is a dark, mysterious count who hardly speaks to anyone in town takes an orphan girl under his wing to protect her from the cruelty of the other children.

    Done!
Architecture really isn't a strength of mine, so I'm happy with how the buildings turned out. It's a small step toward improvement

Holy crap...16!!!??? You keep this, which to no doubt you will. you'll get in the industry no problem. Is your first post paintings of characters from a series called Life Unexpected? The girl really looks like the main character, Lux..

Keep on painting for sure. Nice one

that still life is incredible!!! i would say the only thing you could work on is proportions, and anatomy in general, some figures look a little stiff or exaggerated, but after some studies your digis will have that much more impact

    keep posting!
    ...the imperfections make it interesting...

Halogen: It's such a relief to hear that, thank you And yes! I'm surprised someone around here has watched Life Unexpected. It was an awesome show, and I'm sad to see it gone.

Dope Fiend: Thanks! And no argument here. I'll keep at it

This week's CHOW. Wonky anatomy and a half-assed background. Really not my best work, but I thought I'd share it with you all anyhow.
