    Riox's Sketchbook '11

    Alright everyone,

I've decided to start up a new sketchbook on here , in hope I can gain more feedback on my work. I haven't updated on here since January 2010, which is far too long. I have however been floating around on IFX for the last year. Now I feel I need to branch out and get more input from other sources.

    New stuff on last page

Here are some images from 2010 (new to old).

    Feedback appreciated

    Cheers guys

Nick: Hey man, great to see a familiar face. I thought I'd come across here to get more opinions on my work and hopefully I will.

Medusoid: Cheers for leaving comment. Glad you like my stuff :o) As for the Fight Club study I'm afraid I don't have a higher res because I usually work small when I do speedpaintings. Also I dont have the PSD anymore because I had a clear out in the new year.

Anyway here are a bunch of recent WIP's that I'm working on.

This WIP is for the monthly competition over at Imagine FX. The title is "The Shape of Things to Come".

Basically my idea of the future is bleak and twisted. I have created the Apple I-Seat Max, this seat not only feeds you mushed up McDonalds and gets rid of your waste, but the chip in your brain allows you to watch whatever, whenever. The human race (mainly male) are locked away in warehouses so they can be used as a resource. For example excrement is used as fertiliser, in hopes that it can help re-build the planet we've destroyed.

I'd be great to get input on these, so feel free to leave feedback.

    Cheers all.

Hi there and welcome back, by the sounds of it!
Really nice to see a lot of painting, but what strikes me immediately about your work is how muddy colours mostly are (or if not that, then unnatural-looking). It would be great to see some quick sketches done with just vibrant, alive colour on a white or coloured background. That is good practice for teaching yourself not to be afraid of the spectrum (nature sure is not, not even in the dark :-))

    Can't wait to see more!

    Best wishes,
    Ana

Jansi: Thank you for the feedback. I mostly like working with Muddy colours to try get an atmostsphere , but then again colours are still very new to me. I will definatly try out painting bright and vibrant images. I do want to develop my colour skills as much as possible, so thanks for advise.

I've been trying to lighten this image up but I seem to have myself stuck.
Any feedback or critique on the lighting that may help would be great.

    Update:

its better than your first one,I think you need to think about a clearer focal point, however, rather than fuss about lighting.

    keep it up.

Nubian Greene: Hey thanks for the feedback, I agree about the lighting. If I'm unsure how to light something I tend to just dust light all over. I will be going back to this piece and hopefully I'll learn how to light clearly as I go.

Here's an update on the dog image. I've just straightened out problems with the dog on the left. I felt the face was too droopy.

And here's an anatomy study from yesterday, feedback appreciated. Hope you like.

oK my whole message just got deleted twice now... thats fun, THANKS GOOGLE!!! Anyway...
I personally love your colors but then again I'm not sure of my own color ability so...yeah Your work seems kinda "all over the place" with your quality. Some show grade A work and others seem kinda lack luster. Are you posting only new work or are you jumping around cause that can make it hard to evaluate(I just found this out like 2 weeks ago )
Aside from a few places I think your anatomy studies are lookin really nice man

Purple Goat: Thanks for feedback, I didn't use a ref for this one, it's just to show myself how much I have learnt over the last year. This is quite good for me :oP

    Medusoid:
Hello again, thanks for comment. Everything apart from the pencil sketches and first post are recent. Also everything I post from now on will be my latest. I just wanted to show what I'd done over the previous year. I feel I have progressed in the last year but like everyone I have off days where I can't get anything good down.

    Cheers for the feedback.

Ofidian: Cheers man, always great to know people like your stuff.

Right not much of an update today. Just got a quick speedpainting and a wip.

For the speedpainting I've just tried to keep it loose to train myself to use a bigger brush. I hope to do much more of these this year to really push my composition skills.

The wip is a screencap from the movie Underworld. It's a shot of Lucian that I couldn't resist. I've already spent about 15-20 minutes on it. I think this one is going to be a challenge.

    Feedback apperciated, cheers.

Hey hey, you asked me for pointers, so here's some.
I've noticed, that your paintings most of the time suffer from poor edge quality.
Which happens when you get the "straw" effect by using many little strokes.
You often have to think about masses, try to block some areas with one big "flat" shape of value/color. Also treat your edges carefully.

    There's soft, firm, hard edge.

Soft edges tend to receed, firm are good in transitions, while hard edges can be used to accent something.

Here's a pianing by Zhaoming Wu, look how he handles the subject.

Icecold: Thanks a lot for taking the time out to leave feedback. I have always struggled with my lines. I use to think I needed them all to be clean edges so they don't blend into the background. Also my images always seem flat and thats probably why. So thank you for pointing that out!

Cgaddict: Thanks for commenting, glad your liking things so far. I'm looking forward to improving further this year.

Right quick update on my IFX challenge. I'm glad I took the time out from it and came back with fresh eyes. Now I can see where I want to go with it and how I want to progress.

Florian P: Hey, thanks for the comment. I'm planning on devoting more time to still life. I understand that my colours have a long way to go yet.

Opheliac: Thanks, glad your enjoying my images. I'll knock a couple more screen caps out over the next week or so.

Towy: Cheers for the feedback. Hopefully I'll improve on those studiesin the near future.

Ok here is my final for the IFX monthly challenge. I'm fairly happy with how it came out, but I'll have to do better with my next piece.

You told me to drop by in your Greed thread, so I did.
You have quite a bit of different stuff in here. I like the anatomical studies a lot, and doing more (as in a great deal more) is both extreamly helpful and can make for some really interesting pieces.
For example, you have an image of a muscled torso. It looks well done, finishing the rest of the body could turn it into a full fledged completed image.
I feel that your environments could use more hard edges. Maybe try some custom brushes or whatever. I would try to merge soft, round brushes with hard, sharp brushes into the same piece. It helps create depth and areas of focus.
I can already see improvement in your work, and that is a great sign.
    Keep on working!

Duman: Thanks for dropping in and leaving feedback. It's good to know my anatomy studies aren't getting over looked. I know I need to do more because I always seem to get fed up because my anatomy seems off on personal work.
Also I totally agree with the comment you made regarding my enviroments. everything always seems blurred, I think more studies are in order all round.
    Cheers again for the feedback

Ok, I have a bit of an update. I have a few things to get on here from the last few weeks. I seem to have neglected this thread a little and I don't know why.

First is my finished entry for the IFX Monthly challenge. I got a lot of help and feedback from the WIP section, so thank you to those who helped.

I also have a WIP of a screencap I'm currently working on.

This is another WIP. Me and a friend have recently watched the Manga series "Deathnote" and decided to design our own Shinigami (God of Death) and here's my latest WIP.

Here's a quick it of fan art, took around 30 minutes. I was trying out a different style.

Critque on any of these would be appreciated, cheers.

Silwynar: Hey, cheers for the input. I actually calling that one done for now but thanks for the link I've already found it useful.

    Here's an update!

These are for a personal project I'm working on called microMARS. I found some old top trump card designs that I did back in college (below) and I decided I had to revive this idea.

The idea was based on the news, scientists discovered more about Methane gas in the atmosphere on Mars. They discovered that the gas is continuous in only three regions. The original story was from a few years ago, when they discovered the gas. The gas could be produced either by geological activity or by life. So my first thought was a load of micro aliens sat around farting all the time, so I rolled with it lol. In the end I created 50 or so top trump (how fitting) card designs.

So I'm re-doing the lot and hopefully creating a comic for my portfolio, along with new cards. These are the first 2 designs.

There loose at the moment but, I'd still like to know what you all think of them and the idea.

Hey guy's, it's been a while again. :o( I have been doing images though and I didn't want to update till I had something worth putting up. I have recently thought that I really need to up my game.

Here are my latest WIP's. I'm hoping that these are a start of something new for me.

Hopefully you guys think I'm turning a corner too.

    Any feedback appreciated, cheers.

This is my new Shimigami character

And this is an enviroment WIP. I just wanted to try do an epic scene. It's the defence wall for a hidden city.
