Great studies man! It's good to see you putting in so much work. But, the lines, try and clean up those lines. The scratchiness of them, really takes away from the overall quality. Just do the curve in one line, it really helps to build confidence, and speed. Keep working though, you are doing great!

Woo! More updates!!! Keep pushing!! Your doing great!! Those timed figure drawings can be crazy hard. I use to do those awhile back lol I miss posemaniacs, i might hop on there agian soon. I like to draw there poses without the time limit and then add my own understanding of all the muscles to the figure i drew. Helps me practice anatomy. Keep up the great work!!

Finally able to post some more class projects; I have two more oil pastels to scan in, but i won't be able to do that for around 7-8 weeks because they're being displayed at my school over winter break. Comments and critiques are always welcomed!

Definitely seeing signs of improvement from that first post. Drawing is super important, as it's underlies everything you do as an image creator, so you are on the right track. Be very aware of your marks, how they describe the outer edges and inner forms. Right now, I think you tend to generalize or create marks that are haphazard. Be critical, always.

Update on the digital project. It's for my color theory class, and the concept is "harmony and discord," as in we're supposed to use a harmonious color palette in one version and a discordant color palette for a second version of the same piece. At the moment I haven't even gotten to the color yet...but oh well I'm learning a ton!

Update! Got some sketches, some really embarrassing half hour face studies, and a random project I decided to work on.

Had a great day today drawing-wise, went to a model session and ending up sketching gestures and block-ins for around 6 hours, got some imaginative work in, and also had time for a little digital painting. Don't worry imagination, I'll be able to do you justice one of these days! And I'll also be able to look back at this page and laugh, saying "remember when nobody commented on anything I did?" Hopefully I won't be saying that to myself in an empty room 0_0 Anyway the best breakthrough of the day was towards the end of my gesture drawing session, it suddenly hit me from nowhere that I was having a lot of fun! Just cutting loose and going crazy trying to capture a figure in 20-30 seconds with as few lines as possible for hours on end was fun to me. Maybe I'm weird like that. So, I'm not going to upload all 45+pages of gestures I did, but I did put a few of the more decent ones up for you guys, as well as my first digital painting with no pre-planning/ sketches in quite a while. Please rip it to shreds! Critique it, and hopefully give some helpful comments, because I need them! Badly! I know I suck right now, but by this time next year I want to be on a completely different level. So I'd be grateful if you fellow conceptartians would give me your opinions. Thanks!

Eternal Apprentice: Thanks for the advice man, I'm not an animation major (illustration instead), but I do love animation and plan to do some work in that medium in the future. I have some ideas/ stories in my head that I can only imagine as animations. Anyway my roommate does happen to be an animation major, so I'll pass the info on to him.

Did some gesture drawing, but I'm not sure that's something anybody wants to see. Also have what was supposed to be a quick face study in color but morphed into something longer and more annoying, a random portrait from my head to try out what I learned, and another half hour-ish grayscale face study from a random photo.

Nice work i'm seeing in this sketchbook. I agree about your lines. At some times i see it clean and crisp and other times it gets chaotic and scratchy. Keep up the clean lines.

I got the idea for the anatomy studies from my life drawing professor, after looking over some of my sketchbook he recommended choosing some of my imaginative figure drawings to go over with an ink pen and add the muscles, with the help of an anatomy book. When I thought about it later though I didn't really like the idea of drawing over my sketches with a pen for some reason, so I decided to do the next best thing and add them in photoshop.

So that's it for today, now to go do my actual homework. It's kinda funny how I'm procrastinating on my art school homework by making art...it's silly when you think about it. It's like a math student procrastinating on his calculus homework by doing math problems :/

you have a real knack with textures and patterns too, that's visible even from your first post, keep going and don't stop pushin'

Great seeing the improvement in here!! You're doing great, keep it up!

A good exercise when starting out with colour (or greyscale studies really) is to use as big a brush as possible for as long as possible, until you really feel like there is nothing more to do without swapping to a smaller one. Or challenging yourself to only use that bigger brush. Good way to develop and keep a sense of structure and solidity to your work.

Figured I might as well prove to the world that I am in fact doing those gesture drawings I've been talking about, so here are a few of the lastest ones



Are these looser drawings things you guys want to see? If they are then I'll continue posting some of them, but if not they'll go back into my art cave.

Some imaginative sketches (working on seeing how much of that anatomy I've been studying I remember)



a gouache self portrait; this was my first time using gouache, so I think it turned out alright for the short amount of time I spent on it.



and two oil pastel pieces that I finished last quarter but didn't end up actually getting back until now, so today was the first chance I had to finally scan them in. I personally like how the second piece (a master copy of Daniel Garber's "Tannis") turned out.

Pretty much nothing in this update, but I'm currently working on a new project that I think will be pretty interesting. It should be completely hopefully early tomorrow.

Here are a couple sketches, for the first one I actually drew it on lined paper ripped out of one of my notebooks D: I haven't done that in forever. I was on the bus, and I reached into by backpack to get my sketchbook when I realized I had accidentally left it back at my dorm when I left for class. This probably horrified me a little more than it should have in retrospect, but, because I still wanted to draw a little, I just used the next best thing: my notebook paper. Later I tried to erase the lines in photoshop, but that didn't work out too well. I think it looks kinda cool though




Then here's a grayscale portrait that was supposed to be brad pitt. Don't think I succeeded very well in getting his likeness, but oh well. Tried to use a large brush for the whole thing, and I surprisingly managed to do it. This taught me a lot, so I'm glad I did it.

hi there, nice progress man, you should also work on your line quality, try doing straight lines freehand, connect points with straight lines and curves, try drawing cubes freehand to help your 3d space perception.

the rendering on the last piece reminds me of (i think) japanese woodblock print things. really cool.

I think the image could've used some more overlap though. Right now it reads kind of like everything's separate from each other (the sword, the woman, the crane, etc)

Great work ethic man! Watch those lines though, really focus on making each line fluid and flowing. Nice sketchbook all in all though

hey mate, thats a great hard work you are doing here!!! There is improvement thats for sure and you have to keep up the study. I would say dont bother that much with color right now, you dont want to be distracted by a third problem while you need to solve more stuff with drawing and values. In overall you should strive to become a 3d scanner lol . You should be able to draw from your mind basic 3d forms [cubes,cylinders etc] in any perspective, after that you will need to be able to add light and shadow and here is where values come. Color is later, dont worry that much, it will come nicely when you will understand values. These rough asian themed sketches are really good. Also your values in the reffed studies are looking good but you have to keep it up
You are on the right track, now lets keep up !!!
