    Hey Beeston, there's been some good progress on this SB. I like post 91; it would be cool to see that finished.

    Regarding character designs: my method is all about readability and identity. Readability being strong shapes and balanced tonal arrangement. I use four tones. Tones before hues too. Identity regards the idea behind the character and the volume of information packed into the picture itself. A character that isn't really anything in particular is a weak character, I think.

    Here's a quick sketch of your traveller dude, re-jigged. You should be able to squint and still see your character instead having it blur into a glob of whatever dominant tone happens to win through, or simplify into two. Another test can be done by viewing a downsized version of the pic. There is none, or little, impact without readability. (Note: The lighting in my example is too perfect, I know, but the principle's still the same.)
