Tonights work. Ran up about 3 or four hours of dedicated time. I'm pretty happy with progress in terms of colour and lighting.

Trying to get more work in on the concept art subject that I'm quite behind in. Need to grind out some stuff urgently.

hey Beeston
i like your medievil concepts and I'm a bit jealous on your photoshop skills
stay tuned
thanks for stopping by my sketchbook.
you're welcome !
Thanks Bigeffu, I hope your sketchbook gains a decent following.
Here's a painting which I'm going to finish in a few hours, needs colour, an arm proportion adjustment and a helmet proportion adjustment, as well as some more polish. Getting to use the whole idea of a context tonal cue a lot better and it's really helping me. Also trying to go greyscale first then colour and seeing how that works for my process.
And here's the coloured version:
Things I've learned from these mistakes:
I noticed that starting greyscale helps me define value a lot more, and normally I would have tended to struggle with a little bit more. I also realized that the way around this problem is to establish an atmospheric colour and then work additive from there, keeping in mind that the less light there is from a given light source, the more it biases towards this colour. This also seems to require an additional composition process where the colour still hast to be established before any value groundwork is established in the final image, which comes back to thumbnailing and planning the image before painting it. Since value is my strength and not other things like line, flow or colour then this seems to be a better cornerstone for me to work on those other areas.

hey Beeston
wow that reminds me a bit of a soldier from Rohan (Lord of the Rings). I really like it. Keep it it up![]()
The reason for that is that the designers on LOTR and I both required our characters to be of Norwegian background, and for that reason we both used round shields and a variation of Norman helmets - as well as beard and warmly dressed undergarments. Other than that my armor designs have vaguely french influences.

hey Bee. Careful with the skew on the soldiers head. If you draw a vertical line to divide his face or flip the image horizontally you'll notice some disparity issues. Otherwise lookin pretty.
You know who that is. There are some major anatomy and proportion issues due to the discrepancies of the initial sketch and the final rendered output. Don't worry, I'm working on those. Also, I know that he's supposed to only have his left eye, but I was doing what Thab said and I recorded the flip canvas horizontal to Shift F2, so that's what you're looking at. I kind of like that orientation better. I noticed that I have a massive bias towards the right of the image because I'm left handed and I tend to push to the right sometimes.
The rest of them are kind of half assed lazy pieces just trying to explore how things can work if done different ways. Also, Noah Bradley did a paintover of one of pieces, I can't wait to upload the edited version

Oh, so the monk piece in Noah's stream was yours? I kept quiet when he started going on about always drawing the feet, I never seem to fit them in. My pro composition skills showing again.
Nibru's face is looking great, especially the nose, and the pose is good too. I might move the arm holding the pole up a tad though; mess around with a broom and a mirror to see how it really looks. The Rohan-type guy's armour is cool, and good rendering all round, but the arm holding the sword looks strange, bent the wrong way.
Keep it up man.![]()

Some things I did over the weekend. Here we have a Photoshop sketch of one of Jason Chan's archtypes, a study of his style development and my keyboard is squeaking and it's pissing me off.
Secondly we have a bunch of thumbnails that I did to practice shape design to implementation and thirdly I felt like sculpting something so I sculpted a protoss head. Woohoo.

Progress on the Zealot thing. Will probably get down to skin detail level with this one, paint it, pretty it up and render it out.

Some Lazy uploads. I say lazy because I didn't feel like making them presentable before uploading them. Have a heap of bus sketches on route.

A Bunch of drawings from life from the Atelier and that one observational drawing based on angles. That... took a while.
Back to the very basics I guess.
