    Serious Business SB

Hi there! I'm a 25 year old design student and my dream is to become a
full-time illustrator. Since daily practice is the way to improvement
I hope this sketchbook will help me not to loose my motivation. ^^
Comments and crit are totally welcome!

    here are some photo studies:

    Marlene Dietrich

my first attempt at master copy, Needlewoman by Velazquez

    some WIPs

That's it for now, I'm gonna post some anatomy studies and more practice stuff soon!

The first one is cool. You could try to add other cool colors and tones to add more life and make it more artistic. Ariel is sweet but the skin shading is rough - maybe softer touch will be only in plus Here is the color issue again - the hair is not only light red and dark red... add orange maybe wine color. The tail too add blue tones atc...

    Cheers.

The artwork you did for your friend's band is really awesome! The idea is great, and the interpretation equally well.
Your pencil values and anatomy are fine, though your digital don't seem comfortable yet. In any case, you're doing the right stuff, just keep at this. Great start

@BlackDelphin Thank you very much for the encouraging words! The Design was fun and you're right about the digital stuff, I'm not quite comfortable with painting yet, I hope I can work on that by doing more foto and life studies.

also from today, a portrait from life I did with the mirror I bought for my desk (looks kinda weird, having this huge mirror on my desk but oh well...)
Also normally I wear glasses but I didn't want to paint them, but I couldn't take them off either cause everythings blurry without them so I had to improvise a little

@Eric-Anthony: Thanks for the advice! I've tried to use a softer brush for the
following foto study and I think it helped.
I want to push this one a little more, so it's still unfinished

Nice lookin' sb you got here, I'm really digging your color studies. One thing about your mermaid piece, though, watch the shadows on her left arm (our right). The way you have it almost makes it look like a shirt sleeve.

    Keep posting! ^^

Hi there! I think more stilllifes will give you better results at this stage. Painting from refs is helpful but it's still a 2D. Once you've mastered the color, doing refs things will take less time.
    Have a good one.

Thanx for visiting my SB I like your studies a lot especially from imagination. The only advice I can give, is to try to use bigger strokes at first and than bit by bit go to small strokes. Like on #7 or third pic on #1 we see a lot of strokes that we don't really need. But anyway, you've improved a lot, so keep this work and you'll get perfect very quickly

Thanks a lot for the useful advice! I have used bigger strokes
in this self portrait and I think it made shading somewhat easier

some painting practice, I first painted in black and white and started to colour ofer the greyscale image. Haven't used that method before and I'm not quite sure how to get the right colours

I like the design of the character.
The skin looks a bit gray to me but since you used that method I supposed that is just 'couse of that.

thank you! Your right about the greyness, I'll go
back to starting with colours from the beginning

mexican inspired illustration I did in class, it's based on the mexican La Catrina figure
from the day of the dead.

    and some portrait/skin tone practice

    I simply love yours calaveras!!!!really!!!
Maybe instead of starting from the beginning you coudl use a layer in colorised mode for add a bit of color and than paint over, so you will not lose all your work, just an idea.
