Greetings, my name is Heather Williams and this is my sketchbook.
I'm currently a Senior in college majoring in Comic Art I'm aiming to learn how to craft comics and tell stories. I'm working on improving my observation skills, and paying attention to form and 3d space. And everything art really.

I draw lots of fantasy related things, sometimes spilling into horror and sci-fi. So expect to see lots of mythology, creatures, and what not.

Worked some of my favorite images from early this year all the way up to current stuff and some nude studies from the life drawing co-op.
Those studies aren't perfect, but man are they helping.

First few images of dark and monsters are from my Halfmoon story. I think I've learned more trying to draw things for that story than anything else. You'll probably see things for this a lot.

Couple pages of a comic I'm slowly slooowly working on. Kinda my testing ground there.

Then sketches of various unrelatedness.

And then naked people.

Good evening.

First off some in-class doodles from the land of "no really, I'm paying attention."

Been working word balloons into artwork lately. Integrating text with my art has been something I've wanted to do since doing a workshop with Kate Brooke (local artist that does these lovely nature prints), but never got the hang of. Really having fun with that.

And in the bowls of photobucket I found some knot-work from 2009 that I did. I thought to myself, I could vector that. Then that's exactly what I did. Original raster image compared with the vector result.

Last five are an exercise from the book 'Drawing Words & Writing Pictures' a textbook on making comics. Just starting on the first chapter, but I think this book is great so far.
But I digress, the exercise was to sketch five images, not in sequence, of the following.
1. a person running
2. a car speeding
3. a ball falling
4. a person staggering
5. a newspaper page blowing in the wind

Definitely learn quite a bit once I compared examples off their website.
I notice I use Emanata (things like motion lines, sweat beads, ect.) pretty sparingly, if at all. I think learning to use them a bit more can give a lot of motion to otherwise static images.
I drew a complete blank on the ball falling. I mean, how many ways can a ball fall? Well, their examples showed me several ways.
After image and motion lines blurring the contours of an object really made that ball look like it was flying. Something that didn't occur in my sketches at ALL, but I'm keeping it in mind for next time.

Definitely learned some interesting things with only that one exercise. I'm excited to be continuing on with this book.
Definitely getting a mind for things reading it that didn't quite stick as well with reading Will Eisner's or Scott McCloud's books (although they are still very wonderful and I do treasure them.)

Sorry that might have been a long talk. Just wanted to keep down my thoughts and learning experience.

Finals are coming in for the kill.

Some doodles to start off with.
Mia is an oldie of a character, but I was doodling whatever came to mind. Along with her is a random red head, and a yellow head to match.
Then rismonster and concentrating on how he moves. (noticed I tend to draw him in static poses)

More exploratory sketches of some more of my head friends. People with wings are fun to draw. Also highly ridiculous... but fun to draw.
also making female armor without using the ol' anatomical obvious breast plate is a bit difficult. Gonna have to explore that some more.

Then a still life I made for an assignment.

Excited for my figure drawing class next semester. I'll be able to spend more time on things. (usually run out of time just as I get to the hands, feet, and face.)

Hope everyone has been having a good holiday. I almost always run into this season with the mistaken idea that I'll get something done. Things get so busy that I never do.

In any case, started diligently sketching things for one of my stories, then degraded into a purely self indulgent redux of an old beloved character of mine.

Well, cleaning out all my drawers for 2011 means moving all my files to a folder marked 2010. So this post is going to be much smaller than most.

In this post a partial character reference, a wip, and some character sketches.

At NickyBeats: Thanks, it's pretty heartening to see the positive responses I've gotten here, considering how high the calibur of work is all around. Definitely gives me the heart to keep drawing.

at Medusoid: On Hellsing,
Not only have I seen it, I read the manga too! It's a great (and bloody violent) story either way you take it. It's been a long time though since I've seen the anime. It wasn't a direct inspiration for the eyewolves, but I totally see the similarities. I had a vague thought at that point of conception when I realized the similarities. I could either stop drawing them or continue drawing them, and I decided I wasn't going to let Hellsing have a monopoly on red eyed black monster hounds. Haha, they're too fun to draw anyway.

I love your cats...people, well cat things, ypu know what I mean.
They have such a story all on their own! they feel like their these energetic little cretures that were harmed in some way that is going to stay with them forever but their better for it some how.

Sorry for my interpretation but their just sooo full of life it's hard not to if you know what I mean ;P

The hexadragon is pretty much done, just needs some smoothing and fixing.

Then a very failed perspective and page 3 of Toxic World. Planning on penciling out all the pages before I color another, but we'll see how that goes.

Then lots of masks and then a couple other doodles.

Then things out of my small sketchbook that I generally doodle in during classes.

Might post some classwork from figure drawing next time. Co-op stuff for sure.

nice work, those studies are very well done

you need to get back to anatomy studies tho, it's your weakest area. you can see when you draw anatomy your lines become very sketchy and uncertain, probably because you're not at all familiar with the shapes and forces involved.
do a few super quick sketches focusing on balance, weight, and tension maybe? really super quick ones, just a couple of swooshy lines so you get an idea what to look for

Past two weeks at the co-op. Started applying some of the things I've been learning in figure drawing. Like using geometric shapes and blocking.

Tried to put down sure strokes on a couple today. Hard to break that habit of feathering along, but it might be good for me to get better at making single strokes.

I have never seen a digital nude figure study before, dont they have rules about bringing in electronics like computers into those rooms for privacy reasons? They look great and IDK why Iv never seen em b4

@Medusoid: Well, I will admit that I'm the only one with a computer in there, but no one seems to mind. Besides, it would be glaringly obvious if I was trying to take pictures cause the computer would have to face towards the model. Last time I actually used it to look up the score for the Packers game per request of the model. So I think they definitely don't mind haha.

Alright, in this post be have Robins. As an assignment in Illustration, it was to chose a state bird and illustrate it. Crows are a photo-mash up for a different class. A skeleton for Figure Drawing Class. The rest is pretty much doodles in or in-between classes.

No co-op this week cause I went to the zoo instead. Had fun, drew animals, but I still wish I could have done both. haha. So fun.

Have you looked at Central African masquerades? Might give you some ideas for those costumes

I love your creature drawings, especially the pencilstuff! Some look really creepy and mysterious. And you have a great way to create atmosphere in your paintings.

But the studies of the human bodies look sometimes stiff. Maybe it will help, if you do quick drawings of dynamic poses. Gesture drawings to define the masses and movement of the bones will do the job

Co-op drawings from the past two weeks. I think figure drawing class has been helping me a lot with these, especially with method and what to look for.
I don't know happened with the female model. I think I must have been really tired because I was just all over the place. You'll see what I mean when you take a look.

Might come back and post other stuff soon. Depends on how the work flow goes.
