Lovely stuff! and I definately agree with Dan Liimatta. That samurai/jap horse rider is fantastic. I would love to see it finished.
Keep up the great work!

NOOOO IT'S FROM REFERENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! D: I was late to work when posting it and I thought it was so obviously above my ''true'' skill level so I didn't bother writing anything special about it! It's a traaap!!!
Anyway, to not spam my thread without pictures I'm going to post the only thing I've had time to do.
EDIT: Oh heyy, page two! The best way to start a new page is by posting something as stupid as possible right off the bat, hahahaha :----D

yeah I assumed it was from reference - just liked how you translated it, the methods you used.
and yeah sniping with something silly seems to be the way to go ~
Also I hate it when I feel that I can't reply to my own thread because I don't have anything to post - often I leave off posting a few things so that I can use them in case I feel the need to reply (or I post in peoples SBs etc ~ at least I don't feel too bad spamming/bumping others SBs).

Nice stuff. I like the mix of charcoal and ink, and your lines are very clean and clear.
I'd recommend maybe doing some value studies, just black, white and gray and then once you're comfortable with that do some color study.
Just my 2 cents![]()
Either way, keep going and let us see some more stuff.
Great sb Saara, doing well with your life and anatomy studiesDo studies like 1 month, then give yourself a week to do a masterpiece with everything you've learned
![]()
You really rock at the work output!
Dan Liimatta: Yeah, it's pretty depressing when there's something you want to answer to but feel like it'd be bad to bump your own thread. There's no rule for that as far as I know but it still feels wrong. Oh, and for your previous question, I'd guesstimate that the horseman took 2-3 hours.
Dracken: I agree, I really have trouble with values. I'm gonna have to tackle that. Thanks a lot, I appreciate it.
Sweron: Studies are a given, hehe. But a masterpiece? Errr... Maybe in a few years... Teeeen or so. I'll try to apply what I've learned in practice though, sure. Haha
Tides: I'm trying to. Thanks!
Anyhow, I think I learned a lot today. Bridgman studies are crazy fun to do.![]()

Wow, this sketchbook is going to be very captivating. You are using so many different techniques or different ways to use one technique, it's amazing. I love the dynamic and power of your lines. I'm looking forward to see more from you
Valyavande: Thanks. I'm trying to find the way that's most suited for me, that's why the different techniques ;P.
I need to learn how to draw hands. And male faces. And everything. I actually did some stuff from imagination today (haha!). The girl's face is there twice because I scanned the first 10 or so pages earlier in the day and edited some drawings to the previous page because both pages had so much blank paper. Then afterwards I drew the other girl on the same page so the face got scanned twice.
On the last page the torso with proper values in it was from ref, the rest were modifications of that.
Yeah, but it also motivates me to do some pieces as well - esp. faster ones.
I like the paintings - and I find the first of the last batch strangely captivating.
The gestures are also cool, and I like how you have done them from the scribbly lines to the last with muscles/volumes.
Nice to see the texture in the 2nd piece in the previous batch - something I too often forget to add in for some reason - given that I've worked as a texture artist and so ~ anyway it's nice to see all the work you put into it and how well it comes out.
EDIT: & Yes Bridgeman are one of the more fun to do - should get back to it as I've grown lazy when it comes to studies since 2008 :/
SB. p31 updated 25.04.2012.
your drawing a lot lately, you have a good line use on your pencil drawings and digital work. Your crosshatching is fine too so keep up the good work.
Hey Saraa, Thanks for dropping by my sketchbook and for the advice...really like all your studies...i need to get around to doing more of that...and the samurai is dope...looks sculpted!![]()
Bing's Sketchbook

Dan Liimatta: Thanks again! The smoothness is just part of the charm. I think it might look good, though. Try it out! Stepping out of your usual route is often a nice thing
.
Deadlyhamster: Thanks. I just recently realized that I want to go pro despite not having much skill. I'm trying to fix that at the moment, haha!
Bing!: Thanks!
I don't understand color or values at all. I can't draw anything I've studied. So that means I'm doing it wrong. I need to really understand what I'm doing. I have to draw more from imagination and actually think of what I'm doing when studying instead of mindlessly just scribbling away. I'll try to really get the photostudies to sink in by painting from my own head...
I wanna learn D:<. Graaahh!
Edit: Oh yeah, and those are from reference except most of the torsos on the bottom row. Although I suppose there wasn't much confusion about that. Haha.

I agree - it's good to get out of the comfort zone - and I often do when it comes to painting - but texture wise I'm kind of stifled by not using photoshop at the moment or other photoediting software (using a simple straight painting app in Paint tool Sai) - so texturing comes more from painting in things - well it get's different.
I still do it as with the latest landscape as I painted in trees and such - but ~ yeah.
& It seems to problematic for some to go from study to their own pieces - I come so much from doing my own and ignoring studies that it was almost inverted - but a tip is to use references for your own pieces and lots of them. As in have good paintings on the walls and around you as you do yours and take in what they did good as you try to make your own rights.
& I really like how you paint these pieces - and it's not so much the subject or if it's referenced, but just how raw/simple and yet clean and good looks -
SB. p31 updated 25.04.2012.
@Dan: Oh, I see. Then I can kind of understand why you'd prefer not to then. It's a real pain to do that without any ''shortcuts'' like the ones PS has to offer. Thanks for the advice as well, I should probably find a good balance between imaginative stuff and studying. I do have my walls full of Mullins though. What better thing to see first thing in the morning?
Anyway. First two are drawings I just got back from school, they're a few months old but I kind of like the beady-eyed monster so whatever. It didn't fit into my scanner so I just took a crappy photo. I tried messing with the curves to save the situation but computer says no, so I hope you don't mind the quality ;P.
Everything is from head except every 2nd anatomy study, last two rows of color studies and the last page, although I added the beard to the woman just because I felt like it. Oh, and the happy box is actually a bag. Oops.
well it's partly about being lazy I guess as well ~ could use other software - and could use Sai better as well ~
I'll try it tonight perhaps (and I even worked as a texture artist for 2 years - so in hindsight it might be flight).
The first two are hard to read - but I like what I can see of the 2nd and the rooty hand of the first.
Also nice studies - for some reason I like the flat face of the last of the colour blockouts and I also like the last/4th of the anatomy studies & the woman in the lower right of the 2nd to last image ~ also somedays, today perhaps, a happy box wouldn't be too bad.

bah, i hate browsing other peoples sketchbooks, makes me feel so lazy when i see the stuff being produced fff, your studies in particular, are impressive. i used to churn out similar amounts, then i went to uni, and sat in front of a pc all day [sigh]
loved reading the lil comments in your studies too
oh btw, my sketchbook title is a quote from some completely random film we were shown in contextual studies in uni, no idea what it is, i just remember some 80 yr old woman shouting it in spanish at someone. kinda stuck in my head XD
must go, got posemaniacs 30 second timer beeping at me
keep it up and all that, sorry i cant offer any useful criticism
*edit* foreshortening, fuck if i know, i draw like a million circles [circles help] and one sometimes ends up looking nice
also, for studies of it, download poser or something like it, you can get some crazy foreshortening poses to practice with that.
nice linework! keep it up dont be lazy! i know how u feel![]()
Wow, I love how experimental your work seems. Lots of variety, keep that up and youll find some really awesome results I'm sure. Keep it up, cant wait to see what you produce.
Wooow cool new stuff![]()

I'd love to see more of your experiments with style. Really interesting stuff. You turn out a lot of work, I can see your commitment shining through!
amazing!!!!
your brushwork in portaits resulted with my emotional breakdown;]
i want to simplify faces like you.
i should work more
best wishes
cute!treefolkKeep experimenting, also i wanna see more pen works because these newest are pretty good! I love ya finns : D
"Happy box"!! haha
Dig the tree creature!
Dan: Yeah, go for it! Make sure to post it, I wanna see! And yup, sometimes we all need a happy box. Thanks!
iheartmyself: NOOO!! Someone actually reads that! Oh crap, I've written all kinds of rubbish in there because I've thought that no one bothers to read it. Thanks for bothering to look at my little drawthings so closely to notice, though. Hahaha!! Oh, and for your benefit, I can say that I've been sitting in front of the PC all day this weekend. I do everything very, very thoroughly so that means 12 hours to no end. You can revel in that ;P
mass87: It's too late! I'll stop being bad and evil and start drawing right now. Thanks!
PHATandy: Me neither, lol. Thank you!
Sushy: Thanks!
Patonki: Not today, not today. Thanks though, haha.
witek: Thank you.
hu-ha: Hahaha, thanks! And yeah, sure thing!
Tides: Thanks.
I've been lazy and bad and evil. At least I have a reason not to draw much today because of the exams but this weekend I just played League of Legends. Even the abbreviation is laughing at my uselessneeeeess!! (I'm only half serious, lol). And wow, it feels hard to get the momentum back. It seems that I shouldn't play at all, ever, and just draw. Or play a few hours after drawing but never before. Hmm.
nice update - I like the three faces, especially the strokes of the first and the last.
& the last image is the cool one - like how disconnected and unreal it feels - the chin/jaw both looks real and then the nose comes at you and then the dark eyes all cast in shadow and then everything else just blurs out in random shapes with a wavy hand saying goodbye.
Most of all I think the colours and style is right with it.
& As for gaming and work - once I get some game I really want to play any personal time with anything else that I should do just goes out of the window - currently pushing the Witcher 2 and Portal 2 into the future as I don't feel I can affort to lose myself at the moment.
& I agree about my flygirl - the shoulders are insanly wide especially - going to fix that but was lazy
( & we read randomly it seems - or you could probably confess murder in the SBs and get away with it a slow day - and sometimes people seem to read almost more than you wrote ~ )
SB. p31 updated 25.04.2012.
Very cool range of quick sketches you've got here. No real feedback except for you to keep it up and keep using the different media, that's how you get a solid foundation that lets you tackle any subject.
Nice.
Dan: Oh gee, Dan. Your interpretation makes it sound better than the doodle it is, lol. Thanks.
And yeah - I feel your pain with The Witcher. What a tragic fate I'm going towards (hahaha). I love games so I want to become an artist but if I want to become an artist I can't play. What a dilemma! Life can be so unfair sometimes
The_Flying_Dutchman: I'll try to. Thanks a lot.
I wasn't feeling very inspired today, that's why all the studies... The first girl is from Portishead's All Mine video. Nothing special to say about the rest, just reffed or non-reffed anatomy thingies. I have 15 pages of gestures too but posting and scanning it all would be a major pain in the ass so I just picked my favourite and scanned that. I probably won't post gestures from now on anyway because I've noticed that the ones I've already uploaded are there mostly just to make scrolling down slower because they're just not very interesting to look at.
Anywayyyy, I'm pretty happy with the amount I was able to crank out today. A little less procrastinating, more drawing. I can almost feel all the hair growing on my chest.
Now to find a mama bear to wrestle with...![]()
I can be a/the king of procrastination from time to time & today I did nothing really - but I guess I needed a rest day (and my computer problem pushes me away as well) - but good for you that you did get things done
& yeah I was just writing something - most of the explanations of pieces/art are just in the head of the observer - or I agree with a friend that most that paint (and he did too) just paint something and have it grow and don't have any deeper philosophical thought about it (they, we, might feel something, like when we eat icecream, that it's good and right when we do a stroke, or that it's bad and sad when we do an other and then we get mad because we did it, unles you can undo). In a sense I prefer it thus as it often gets very personal when the gut decides and not some fancy idea you've thought too much about before hand.
But tales are fine sometimes.
& Nice updates - & qucik gestures are fine in small doses yes (you could lay them all on the ground and take a photo) - I like page 2 and 3, especially 2.
SB. p31 updated 25.04.2012.
still like the pencil skethes the mostThey are so cool with those strokes ^^
