    ------------------------------
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    round #194, best in show

    topic:

    round #194, best in show

In this round you are charged with designing a creature so insanely beautiful, adorable, cute, precious, and awe inspiringly pretty, that it wins the best in show award at the intergalactic pet show. an event that gathers thousands of the most attractive species from throughout the known universe.

there's a catch though (you didn't think I'd let you just do a pretty creature did you?) there are a few physical restrictions for this round. 1st it has to be colored primarily a shade of green (at least 50% of its body) , 2nd it has to have scales on some part of its body, other than that you just need to make it extremely aesthetically appealing.

now show us your gorgeous, sweet, green, scaly, pageant winner.

    Deadline:

    Wednesday november 17th, 9:00pm PST (GMT -8 )

    Finals go here: http://=http://conceptart.org/forums...d.php?t=200508

Looking forward to this. Green, scaly and beautiful coming right up. I think Anoles are going to be one of my main inspirations this time around...

Here´s my idea! I´m probably not even going with it but I thought I´d post it anyway. It´s cute by alien standards, I promise you.

Some starting sketches based on a scribble in Alchemy. Neither really says "Pageant winner" though, so I'm going to try a different approach. I can push the design a lot further, I'm sure.

OHI - funny creature, it's cute indeed but maybe too cute to look beautiful.

Tsyroni - Its elegant and nice, I like it. Think you're right tho, to me it looks more like some general dragonthingy than a pageantwinner.

    Heres my first sketch:

Hey guys, missed a couple of cows, this topic sounds like a lot of fun. Looking forward to what kind of *showy creatures everyone will be creating :>

OHI Cute even by earth standards I'd say. Keep evolving that into a pure puppy-eye creature eyelashes and all

Tsyroni Damn My creature is also along those dragonqesque lines, I was thinking the same thing with the "regal" nature of the lion/dragon creature. I like the energy and dynamic pose you got in that second iteration.

Porcupine Great concept already, good idea with the trophys and medals, I dont know if its meant to be a mouth in the final piece but right now it looks as if the creature has that knowing smirk, it knows its won.

a coulorpass that i kept working on.

Edward B - It knows it won very much yes

Your sketch looks great, the lines are elegant and I love the head, right now the back looks like it ending kinda abruptly, maybe the pose that does it, but apart from that it looks like a great start!

Might have to try it out

Here's my initial concept, got to put it in to Gimp and see what I can do with cleaning it up, and sorting out the color scheme. Any Crits/Ideas always welcome. I watch these activities all the time, but never manage to get one submitted. I like the idea on this one, hopefully, I can get the textures right, and finish it up.

Thinking about working on a less boring pose, maybe a little off to the side, but those pets on the shows look stiff anyway. maybe I'll tilt down the one side, so it kinda looks like a curtsey, or bow.

Anyway, fun stuff! Sorry for the crappy photo, I can never find a good scanner that keeps working.

    Here's the elusive Bearded Draco-Arachnix.

    Thanks,

Quick little sketch I threw down. I wanted it to have excessive decorative fans and crests... Planning on having a pretty vibrant colour palette.

Should the creature be attractive in the eyes of a human? Since its an intergalactic beuty contest Id say that would be weird. On the other hand the request to make the creature beautiful would be utterly pointless since beauty is such a different thing for different people/creatures (even among us humans) if it wasnt for our eyes.

Si_Swe - the eyes look gorgeous. keep that direction up. perhaps try to render it more soft and comicish this time? that would fit a bit better this time than the stroke-rendering u normally do.

sourfruitjunkie - looking good, the stellar touch is a great idea.

Ragnj - u made a point there but i think they mean in the eyes of a human, even if that´s not logical. since it´s not mentioned in the brief i see ur chance to break out of the mass and make something beautiful regarding to a different species?!

some very interesting design here again.
For my part, I run for more Kawai : cute vs awe
so I choose a genetic modified pet, with cuteness and without fur (for home cleansing gain cat and dog owner can understand )
not sure for the tail... advice welcome !

ragnj: yeah, in the eyes of a human is what I had in mind. But like you and ninety9 said it wasn't in the brief. so if you can justify it in your description I say go for a real freakout! It would sort of set you apart.

Getting a handle on some color ideas/learning how to use photoshop again. I'm going for the celestial feel because I felt inspired by nebula and solar flares; which I personally find incredibly beautiful, therefore a judge or two at this intergalactic pet show will possibly feel the same :] Though I'm not sure about how that idea will flesh out, that's the idea I'm going for.

Looks like an interesting round already!

McGhoul - Looks promising, the pose looks kinda stiff, unless its front paws are suppose to be resting on something higher than the ground it looks like their hanging in the air more than holding the creatures weight.

eth777 - Welcome to COW! If you manage to make a spiderlike thing look beautiful I think its gonna be really cool, just watch out so it doesn't look to much like a regular tarantula.

Malchick - Looks great, makes me think of arabian horse show!

Si Swe - A lot of potential here, the head is beautiful already!

sourfruitjunkie - The creature itself looks stunning, the way it running downwards make me think of disaster like its falling from grace or something, and its facialexpression looks hunted too in some way.

    Edward B - Looks marvelous!

Haekel - Aaw cute, makes me think of a baby fennec. Think about where you position the humans thumb tho haha, always makes me laugh when people holding their babies or pets like that in real photos.

OHI - Try look at things you find elegant for example. Doesnt have to be animals but could be items or patterns or lines or colors, anything that gives inspiration. If you want references of actual animals perhaps look at exotic birds, insects or maybe antelopes. Quick google search came up with this:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/oooheav...7622782111831/
    http://www.digitalpicturezone.com/ty...l-photography/
perhaps you can find any ideas there.

Here's my update, I felt the body was bit too doglike so changed it slightly

Beautiful curves and colours. Keep on render it out.

    Si_Swe's
    Great design.

    malchick
Beautiful creature. I would let it rise his right front leg and let his left rest on the ground to get more balance in his body.

    porcupine
Nice. Looks very much like a champion.

    haekel
    Very cute

    Edward B
Good design and rendering. Looking forward to see you render out the fine details.

    eth777
I like the idea. I just had to do a spider inspired creature when I saw yours.

    McGhoul
Nice Perhaps work a bit on the leg anatomy.

    Tsyroni
    Good start.

    OHI
Perhaps just start with some random forms.

    Thanks for the feedback.
Porcupine: I did initially want him standing on a platform with steps like at a dog show but I can see now that I have to re-think that as I'm not sure it will work with the current pose.

JanJager: Yes looks like my priority will be with the front legs. I will get some cat references and work from there to fixed up the anatomy and pose.

    Thank you both.
