    - Sketchbook of Jane

    Hi all!
I think it's about time I mash some of my sketches in a thread of their own.

If you feel like dishing out constructive feedback, I'll be glad to hear your opinions! More sketches will follow soon.

Great stuff here. I love Mr. Crows expression. I'd love to see how he'd handle taking a sip from a glass of water.

Since Batman is my alltime favourite superhero, I'm afraid I'm going to have to watch this thread.

    Thak you guys!
SquidInc: Mr. Crow prefers to lift his beak off when he takes the sip. Of course, he always checks that noone's around to discover his true identity. Oh, and you can expect more Joker/Batman art coming up!

So, I really should be in bed by now, it's getting much too late, but I had to do one more sketch before I nap. Here's two medieval inspired faces from imagination:

    ___________________________________________

EDIT: I moved the three sketched from the first post here, so I'm able to change the sketchbook's thumbnail easilly. Here's the info about the three first images:
1: First off is an early sketch for a character design I'm planning - Mr. Crow. Isn't he adorable.
2-3: Two pieces of Joker/Batman sketches. I've been into that since I watched theDark Knight in 2009. Too bad I missed it on the cinema.

Not that it matters really, since this week's CHOW theme is Serial Killer.

Did another practice of photoshop painting today. I'm learning more each time! But the anatomy is somewhat off.

Amazing work! Love your style. Your digital painting is really great. Love the Connery painting but I know what you mean, getting somebodies likeness is really tough. I'd suggest just overlaying your reference photo so you can trace the lines and see which bits are off.

I love your style, keep it up! As for Connery, your painting is a bit too jovial for him. His nose and mouth is wider, and he has very prominent eyebrows.

Wilko: Thanks! Yeah, that is a good advice. And I already know the mouth is wrong.
pixel cheetah: Thank you! Oh my, I believe you are right.

I couldn't help myself, I had to do one more photoshop painting practice. The anatomy is horribly off, I was way too soaked up in the painting itself. But it matters not, it was a great experience!

Hey there, thanks a lot for the kind comment in my sb. I was feeling like ive been hit by a bus, when i returned from ChoW but that comment just got me back on track.

Well anatomy is off here and there but they will fall in place once you practice more. The last piece, his chin is too large and the shading is off as well. but again its all about practice so no worries.

by the way i checked your portfolio and thats seriously impressive. You seem to have a style of your own which is great. Have to mention your color use looks great too. one little suggestion from me is that use some subtle decorations on those web pages because theres too much white space, i guess.

Well im not experienced enough to be a critique so im just going to help you the way i can. These books have immensely helped me and most of them are kindly suggested by 'ThomasM'. Hopefully they will be really useful for you as well.

Drawing Landscapes in Pencil - Ferdinand Petrie
    Imaginative Realism - James Gurney
Light and Colour - James Gurney
    Icon - Frank Frazzetta
    Drawing Animals - Jack Hamm
Drawing Scenery seascapes and landscapes - Jack Hamm

My favorite anatomy books. Most of them i got recently but seems very useful.

Drawing the female figure by Francis Marshall.
Anatomy for artists by Elliot Goldfinger

some painting tutorials i found really useful. i have posted these links in some other sb's so ill link them here.

some collection of PS tutorials. you may find these useful.

Best of luck mate. You didnt give up on ChoW now did you? Im gonna try my best to draw a full figure on next ChoW. Make sure you add something that shows your character has killed 3 or more, which makes him a serial killer.

Devastacio: Hey! Thanks for a wonderful and in depth comment! And especially so for giving me helpful feedback for my portfolio! I'll make sure to follow your advice and check out those books and links. I actually own Anatomy for the Artist myself, and it's a great book! I bet you agree, huh?
No I didn't give up on CHOW. It will be finished on time, that's a promise to myself. I was wondering though, how I could show that he's a serial killer, without making it too obvious. I'd rather not add blood, that's just too cliche. What a dilemma!

Anatomy for artists is an Ace! i just started it and loving it!

Jane, i think youll have to make it little obvious because after all its a concept art. My concept was way too mysterious and subtle and no one understood it. After all youll have to add some dead body parts in the end i suppose. i hate it anyway because i read a lot about these buggers and they all look normal from the outside. My best bet is read the articles i linked in my sb especially first 2 links. and read my character description a bit. You can use anything from my concept. feel free. Im sure youll get some good simple ideas. heres the link.

    http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...&postcount=228

if you dont have the time to do all this....then how about you add some dead body parts to your character's belt? or another idea; make some props (Human skin Hat, belt of fingers etc etc) lol this sounds really sick! but i suddenly recalled the movie 'Texas Chainsaw massacre'.
oh btw take a look at this fellow. hes a worst sort. but he'll be happy to give you some sick ideas

Hope this helps mate. Best of luck! ill be there for the voting. No need to thank me, your comment just bounced me back from discouragement

Looks like you're onto a really good start! I must admit I'm a sucker for Batman related things, but your stuff is nice and expressive. Also, I really like the way you use colour too.

No crits, I'm afraid, just keep up the good work!

Devastacio: Yeah I saw that link to wikipedia, and I thought: "Sceptical!" Man, that was some sickening reading. It's a rouch business being a character designer. :I We'll see what I can come up with for this weeks design. No doubt he needs some little details that gives him away, more than the crazy gaze.
Oh, and I'm glad that my comment cheered you up!

Naidy: Hehe, thank you. And don't be afraid.

    Hello there,

Well, back in action eh? Nice piece here. I really like the overall mood of it. a job well done!

    few suggestions;

    1. Too much white space here dont you think? it kills the mood, in my opinion.
    2. You heighten the effect of pain by making one of his hand look like he's scratching that stone slab with stiff fingers. dont forget to add scratch marks.
    3. If you can show some wrinkles on his forehead itll be great nah?
    4. if you show his mouth the pain hes experiencing will be obvious to the viewer but i like the subtlety in here.
    5. Eyebrows should be raised from far corners a wee bit dont you think?
    6. Heres the best tip; Watch 'Passion of the Christ'.

Hope this helps mate. Lets see some more cool work of yours soon.

1: oh heck, yes you are right! Way too much white. :s
2,3,4: Actually, I deliberatly chose not to. This character is written in such a manner, it would be natural for him to hide pain as much as possible, and in this scene he's rather angry than hurt. But thanks anyway!
5: Ooh, yes look at that! You are right.
6: I have, several times. ^^ Darn good movie, though I can never watch all of that flogging scene. It's gruesome.

Now, here's some tiny character design sketches I've done over the past few weeks, with my good old PILOT pen on paper. You'd be amazed how much one can learn from doing this kind of work.
