    Cool Barry Sachs Finished Works

Hello fellow forum members. This is my first post here.
Like many others I have finally become brave enough to post
my work here. The following pieces are all from 1 to 2 years ago.

I usually work half traditional and finish the rest digitally. I'm just not ready to give up holding an actual brush in my hands. Anyways, I look forward to everyone's critique.

Nice work Barry, I like the pulp fiction, retro feel of it.
    Best wishes,
    Patrick.

    @ Patrick

Thanks Patrick. A lot of what is here was from my senior year in College. The pulp fiction aspect greatly influenced my work. Now I hope to create a series of work that covers subjects such as horror, action/fantasy and than some more original concepts to help strengthen my portfolio. I struggled over the last year to improve my painting skills and found combining the oil under painting with digital painting helped improve my color choices and lack of mistakes. However I have been doing landscape paintings all in oil to help improve my overall skill with oil painting and color theory. I still prefer a mixture of classical methods with glazing and a little bit of alla prima with oils.

    @ JSpayde

Thank you. I don't always have a story in mind when painting.
However I am a fan of trying to convey movement and create a sense
of drama with sometimes unusual color theory. I think that I want to in the future create a back story in my own mind, unless I get a commission where there is already a script. Although I'm sure there is still room for thinking about the characters emotional state. I'm also drawn to characters who are in their defining moment in their story.

The Rocketeer was a fun piece. That and 20k Leagues are my personal favorites.

I like the more experimental Frankenstein and bride of Frankenstein paintings. They're fun and lively and have a very different feel than the rest. The other images seems to suffer from lack of form, there is a lot of mushiness going where you are not being deliberate enough in choosing your planes, and way too many soft edges. Some odd compositional choices as well...the first guys spear coming to rest almost at a tangent to the frame border, while simultaneoulsly dropping the viewers eye out of the picture. The kids flying push your eye all the way to the moon stuck in the top corner...it get's a little uncomfortable. I'd spend a bit more time planning out your compositions before committing to these.

Just my 2 cents since you asked for crits. =)

Thanks for the 2 cents. I do appreciate it. I agree some of them are a bit soft. The mermaid is definately soft and that is one I want to tweak for the Spectrum annual this year. The 20K piece and the Bowing for kids can be confusing since they are being seen out of context a little. The kids with the moon was a competition piece for a charity even for Big Brothers Big Sisters. The theme was reaching for the sky, the sky is no limit, etc, etc.

I also agree with the 20k piece. It was designed to be part a 4 stamp series. I didn't post it because one of the stamps (Tarzan) did not turn out well at all. It makes more sense seen as a whole, and with extreme cringing I'll post it.

Commisioned Mural for Lancaster, PA Amtrak

I believe I forgot to post this one. This is all digital, all photoshop.
It won one of 11 spots for Murals that were enlarged at 4x8 feet, which served
to make the construction in front of the trainstation look more appealing to the publics eye.

I will state that the tree's were a project requirement. We had to have a half circle on both sides that would link up with all the other pieces so they could be easily interchanged.

Needless to say when all 11 pieces are next to each other it didn't really work since each piece had a different circular shaped object.

This version of the Bride of Frankenstein is all photoshop. It is strictly a portrait. I was trying to recapture the energy of the first version of the Bride that I did. However this one is a bit more realist. It is probably still softly painted by some peoples standards. I prefer to think of this as a finished piece as far as all the essential details go and as a design.

I'm looking forward to everyone's input or suggestions.

Great sense of mood through colour and light. The slightly 'softer' works bring out these strengths and seem to allow your sense of mystery and 'feel' to come through. The 'harder edged' stuff looses this for you I think.
I particularly like the deep sea diver as well as the girl in the water reaching for the pearl (mermaid?) and the 'tower' picture just below the Frankenstien one.
The fault with the pearl/mermaid picture is not its softness, but rather some weaknesses in the drawing here and there.

    @ Chris:

Thanks for the feedback. For most these pieces I do enjoy the softness.
I think the mermaid could use more work. Originally for the project I had
to stop at that point for the concepts class I had due to a deadline and juggling thesis work.

Maybe if I can find the right balance, mainly in the primary focus areas to get a little more hard edged, that will solve the problem of too soft or too hard.
I also found so far that limiting myself to a few brushes, instead of getting all fancy with special effects, that it helps to create a better contrast.
