ROUND #217 :: The Underground Tribe

DESCRIPTION


The Underground Tribe


Many generations ago, radiation and heat forced the people to live underground. Endless networks of tunnels connect the population of Underearth. Having been deprived of real sunlight has changed their appearance, and their looks have been influenced by the scarce resources found in the deep caverns and tunnels. Even though life is hard, the people of Underearth are a resourceful and optimistic tribe.

Design the Underground Tribe.

- Design at least one character that represents this underground tribe.
- Make him/her believable; how would the environment influence this persons appearance, clothing, posture etc?
- Think of the environment! What resources are found underground, how would people survive there? What equipment would they carry?
- Setting can be anything, but there is no electricity. Feel free to think of ways for them to use more basic technology to survive underground!

Hello everyone.
Shame I couldn't do last weeks one. I'm back. Here is my Underground Civilization. As soon as I read 'No electricity' I thought of steampunk. I hear about It a lot recently and thought I might have a go. I figure if humans had to live underground, they would live where its warm. I.e. Lava. Hope people like it.

This was a fun one to do - although I've discovered that painting fur is a pain in the butt. My thoughts immediately went to rodents as a more likely survivor of an aboveground disaster, and that evolved rodentfolk would pick up the leavings of other societies and use them to survive.

My initial sketch attempt ended up looking too canine, so I started pushing it in the direction of a ferret. Some helpful crits pointed out my initial poor hand position and the fact that having just goggles wasn't really telling much about being in a hostile underground area - hence the thimble gasmask.

My very first entry on conceptart forum (plz excuse my poor english)
This underground creatures are at early stage of social development. They use mostly sharpened stones and bones for hunting fish and people of other tribes, since food is hard to get. This tribe believe that red color brings luck so they paint their heads and shoulders with red paint and wear laces with red stones and gems. Males are usually carrying stone knives, women - a rope made of people skin

Well here is mine ^^ this tribe have advanced technology adapted for the undergrounds so they have things like steamy celphones and combustion energy based plasma televisions (?) after a lot of years, they get very pale because of the lack of sunlight and their hands and some arm muscles got very big because of the constant digging and removing rocks. The one i drawed is a worker from the village, they are selected when they born just watching hand size and muscles, they get legs remplazed with this rock pick legs.
Well now about the draw, i made it while school xD then photoshop and sai, i know i can add a lot more of details but i got lazy and deadline was near (im going to sleep now) sorry if i upload it at a wrong way, i asked how to do it but no answers >:0 , well here is.

Well, I tried this in oils, sketches in ballpoint pen, based on naked molerats. Had a lot of fun, he uses bioluminescent mushrooms for light. I have no way to photograph these nicely, so you can't see it as well as I'd like, but its what I have to work with.

Over time, and the limited space, the men changed their morphology. They returned to a more ape-like, stretching their arms and muscles. For the sake of mobility important they learn to combine the functions of their tools. Their best example is the "Ayesin", a crossbow is strong enough to use ice axes, or to grapple pile.
Despite the evolution, so their meaning remains the most reliable. For members of tribes are recognized, each carries an assembly of multiple rings they can make it sound with a gesture. Each tribe has a series of rings that differs.

Heres what I came up with. The tribes' main light source and food supply are bioluminescent mushrooms that grow on the cave floor. His staff is also made from roots of trees that grow high above them. While this tribesman is gathering mushrooms a wall breaks apart and daylight shines through hitting him for the first time in his life. Hope you enjoy!!
