First porfolio

I've been wanting to make a portfolio but I'm not sure what one is supposed to consist of. Does it just need to be a show off current ability or would you want to include past pieces that you have both done for yourself or were commissioned for?

Any tips would be appreciated.

What is this portfolio FOR? What you want to show will be very different depending on whether it's a portfolio to apply to art schools or a portfolio to get work. And if it's to get work, then what you show will vary depending on what kind of work you're looking for.
