I think what's holding your faces back is that you're not sketching in the sphere of the eye before drawing it in. Remember that the eye is a three dimensional form, and the eye lids wrap around the spherical surface of the eyeball. There's also a lot of inconsistency with placing the features of the face (in terms of placement, angle etc) . You should try doing the musculature of the head (rather than just the skull) to help with that.

    nouge, thank you!

PontusEuxinus, yeah, that's definitely something I'm struggling with.

JoeS, absolutely. Studies are fun, though!

Nerferinn, Seikfour04, ja1307 and Philipp, thanks, I apprecciate that.

humboldt squid, you're right. My brain hates faces, I have to work on that for sure. Guess it will take some time to get better at that.

I was quite busy lazy...no excuses, but it's a shitty update.

wui, nice update great hands, but also try to do some from your head. (the last painting in photoshop of the guy in his read shirt ...the hands lack a little bit in there) it´s good to experiment, but the perspective is reallyreally hard, maybe try some easier ones first ;P in my opinion the shadows below his shirt are very dark -> high contrast -> grabs vieweer attention -> meeeh. usually the focus is on the head. (awesome in the pic = the color of the ellbow on the left)
    keep Kicking asses!

wow wow you have gone ballistic with the studies. Its great to see so much hard work really motivates me to keep grinding espc seeing how much improvement you are making. Your hand studies are pretty mind blowing your really understand how to break them down. You have made so much improvement in the last two year, like the subtlety in your pencil rendering. Will def be stopping by again. Thanks for leaving me a comment keep up the good work. its working.

dannng, nice amount of studies here. I must focus more on hands and other parts of the body besides the head... time for some long drawings (from imagination and reference!). Thanks for the inspiration!

your bodies and hands are great; those studies are doing their job!

i would suggest, for some variety, finding some models that don't look so... toned. now that you have the muscle and tendons down, look for the FLESH. find some old saggy dudes or plump women or plump dudes or old saggy women. it may sound weird or strange or uncomfortable, but it will help your understanding of the human form just as much as drawing all these toned dudes will.

    /////

in regards to your faces and expressions... try pulling the shapes away from the head-box. you're really good at doing a couple good angles from the head-box, now open your lines up a bit. don't be afraid to show the back bottom half of the cranium. behind the ear. i see all your ears are in kinda the same place. go back to that plain-old sphere with the circle on it. bend the neck and turn the head so it's looking away from you. also, i notice your faces seem to look a little pinched... try deliberately creating more space between the eyes and between the nose and eyes. see what it does. play around.

i'm looking forward to more from you! sorry if that sounds like any pressure or anything, i don't mean it like that. i'm just eager :>

Damn, I'm still struggling with the same problems...another weak output again, both quality and quantity are ridiculous.

Philipp, thanks a lot! Definitely I made quite a lot of mistakes, didn't even think about that high contrast focal point. Greatly apprecciate your feedback!

ja1307 and Jmob, me, inspring you? You guys better look out for someone better, haha! But thanks, that's a huge compliment.

AngeUnge, uuh, thanks for the feedback! I'll keep that in mind.

Hands and muscle studies are very good. paintings are really well rendered, very realistic, although a bit too clean for my taste, but it's a personal preference.
What i think you need to do more is to focus drawing the heads and faces. That is probably your weak point for now but I'm sure you can tackle them in no time. You know the building blocks to draw the heads right? (I've seen your previous posts in previous page), use it to draw the heads FROM REFERENCE. Find a portrait, break it down to simpler shapes and TAKE YOUR TIME, it doesn't have to be a well rendered studies, but make sure you put everything in the right place. Do it some more with different photo references BEFORE you do it from imagination. Do it slowly each time, observe with care.

You are doing good, keep it up

Oh and, that last figure painting? That REALLY good! Well done

You've got some really nice hand studies going on! Sometimes, the length of your fingers is kinda strange, though.
I really love your lines, they look sexy

Your photo studies are really nice, but I think your skin could need some more texture.

The skulls you draw work better than your faces. Maybe you should draw some skulls in different perspectives, then add the faces in/onto them. This helped me quite a bit.
Also your muscle studies are really nice. It's so hard to really understand how the muscles work.

Wow, you're really pushing it, awesome. You have some fantastic studies and you're definitely doing a lot of them, Keep it up man. My only suggestion which has been said before is to make sure to solidify your studies with imaginative work. You clearly have great observational skills and you just need to learn to translate that into your imaginative work. A lot of people neglect imaginative work when they're really pushing the studying like you are. I'd also say your painting skills are stronger than your drawing, so keep working at it. Great stuff.

    witcrack & Purim, thanks!

ecki, thank you for your input. My brain just hates faces, they just will never work out, haha!

Untouched24Oh yeah, most definitely. Though, I'm more like running away from doing imaginative stuff...it just sucks when looking at it.

Gyvulius, wutangclam & vlad74, thank you guys!

Icecold, naprawde nie masz powodu byc zazdrosny.

    Happy New Year, y'all!
So, I've been at my parents' place over the last 2 weeks. Didn't manage to draw that much, basically just practice.

Man, you're really kicking my ass! I smell some serious dedication + I see improvement.
You seem to have problems with your faces – try to study some skulls, then lay skin and eyes on top of them. This really helped me. (Although I've also still got problems there )
I love your line quality and the confidence with which you pull them!

    Just keep it coming!

ecki, oh man, you're absolutely right - I just can't get my head around faces. That construction idea is good, though, I think it might be way too time consuming do do one single face. I'll figure something out. Thanks!

Elias Leonard & Psychobuddy, yay, thank you!

PontusEuxinus, yeah, I don't really think enough when drawing. My reference collection is basically based on Sam's stuff or Google: http://www.samcarr.net/p/learning-resources.html

Yemi775, haha, I feel like there's never gonna be the day I'll be kicking ass. I apprecciate your words, it's always hard to see any kind of progress in my own stuff.

So again, practicing and failing at drawing faces. Today was just one big struggle, didn't manage to draw anything the way I wanted.
God, the quality of the photos is horrible. Sorry for that!

I see, you're really tackling those faces hard! Great improvement, keep at it!
What I meant wasn't, that you should always start with an underlying skull
I just meant that you could do a few studies like that – I found this to be really helpful and eye opening.

You're really putting a lot of work into your studies - so inspiring!
    Rock on, dude!

these are some strong stuff Lastgen ,there is real improvement in the faces to your last post, keep in mind though that the eyes are bound by perspective in some of the studies they kinda float over the head and break the illusion of 3d.
    keep working hard man.
