I don't know if it's deliberate or not, but frankly, your stuff has a messy quality to it.

been inspired by animators, I was watching a vid of Don Bluth drawing and never realized how important curves vs. straights and avoiding parallels are!
you don't really realize stuff like this till you simplify either, so onwards to simple for me!

These are like ... soooo refreshing and I could do a spit take for the first one. Those beady eyes, that room, it just feels like I want to be standing where the view indicates just being stared at.

Nice robot! But I suppose he is not very stable, with those legs and all..
It's cool to know the owner likes the red hot chilli peppers though, that he would put their logo on its chest xD I'm just messing with you.

Anyway, I Like the red/white batman as well. Reminds me of some traditional work I've done with red ink. Works very strongly, Good job!

Luckers-haa, i didn't realize the logo till you said it, thats what happens when you go lazy with the empire logo. I imagine the owner of the bot is the type to spend only on firepower upgrades then his bot falls over when he tries to go into battle. I gotta go look at those ink drawings of yours now

good direction you are going in. try to cut back on the texture and understand what Craig Mullins is trying to acheive with his technique in terms of value and focal point. It important to emphasize economy in a more painterly style or else the eye has no where to rest.

have a crack at some of Jaime Jones' work. i think you will like/appreciate his style as well.

when these guys are painting they often paint very slowly thinking deeply about the mark they are about to making and how it is going to contribute to the painting. even in your studies of their work you should try to get into their head instead of making arbitrary marks.

keep it up dude, awesome SB.

fuck yes, beautiful work!! I saw Craig Mullins straight away, I applaud your audacity with texture I tend to stick to the round brush but this is reminding me of how much it can bring everything to life. I love your Mech in #170, just perfect!
I do agree with Aryeh though, find your focus and it will push them over the top.

Aryeh- thanks for the very good crit! It really got me thinking, cause I've been studying some on focus and 'get it' (well a little bit) in theory, but haven't been able to apply it in practice yet. Maybe it really comes down to stepping back more, I noticed Jaime Jones saying he kept his eyes glued to the navigator to prioritize his artistic decisions. Haa speaking of Sargent would apparently step back from his paintings very far and then run at it for each stroke. Thats something I haven't developed a habit for yet, and I think my paintings have been suffering due to this (for lit scenes mind you, its different for other types of drawings/paintings i reckon-thinking of where's waldo here lol)

Value wise, well, values are determined by lighting in these sortof pictures. Just started reading about cinematic lighting yesterday, so hopefully with this newfound vocabulary I can improve the emotional focus, step back and quiet down the distracting parts- I need a checklist cause I keep forgetting the important things i tell myself!

Jaime said something cool about master copies I remember- he compared it to reverse engineering, trying to get into the artist's head in the process.

carakhan- thankyou! I think i've been crazy over texture cause I never knew how to make it before. Obviously learning now that flats vs. textures is much more effective than textures vs. textures though. Subtlety is huge here!

Heres something pretty blatant on the subject of focus-cameo lighting-

heres a little sketch from today, I'm trying to get more painterly. I realize that Additive subtractive technique with paintstrokes is perhaps more effective and clear than using bits of old images...need to do this more, show clarity and have whats there be interesting

Hey Lemur, I very much enjoy the last painting.

Heres something I found interesting about it, though. The mountains in the distance (on the left side) seem to be off in a way to me.
I think its because that colour doesn't apear in such a way anywhere else in the painting. I assume you associated that olive green from the yellow sky?
I think the contrast in colour draws my eye towards the mountains. I find it works quite intresting in this piece.

And by the way, I think the painterly look is working very well for you. It's indeed nice to get a "clear" look out of it.
(btw, btw It's interesting to see how the piece looks more vibrant with the blue background of Sijun. )
