Angry 9-11 didn't change the world

I disagree with the claim the 9-11 changed the world. There was violence, hatred and killing before 9-11, and there still is violence, hatred and killing after 9-11. What bothers me the most about this "9-11 has changed the world" claim is that in the minds of some, it justifies putting the U.S. under authoritarian rule. I know the U.S. is a long way from that, but there are those who say another 9-11-sized attack could make that happen. But more to the point, I prefer to live in freedom and risk being hit by a terrorist attack than live under authoritarian rule where there's (supposedly) a greatly-reduced risk of terrorist attack -- especially since I believe authoritarian rule IS a form of terrorism.

Economically I liked Manhattan more before the attack...

(Okay, economically I liked the whole US more before the Bush era. That's when all the trouble really started if you ask me...)

It wasn't the event itself that changed everything. It was the fear-mongering and the mass hysteria that followed.

9/11 woke up some people who weren't preconditioned by ideological influence to pretend nothing happened or that it was all our fault in the first place. Reality itself can be scary, and often those who have been shielded from reality will hate the messenger rather than heed the message.

if 911 didn't happen we wouldn't have this thread talking about how 911 didn't change the world.

I know for one thing is that it changed the lives of Muslims forever... I'm terrified of having my children grow up in environment where "Islam" is a dirty word, and if my daughter chooses to wear hijab, I'll have to worry in my heart if she'll become a target of controversy, hate or worse. I spend a lot of time wishing that 9-11 didn't have to happen, that innocent people didn't have to lose their lives and that innocent Muslims didn't have to suffer the consequences.

The thing is I'm from a tiny, tiny island in the UK and I can tell you it didn't particularly change our world. But of course, that doesn't detract from the fact it changed the world of countless families and people who were there to see it. Any traumatic event tends to stick like glue to those concerned.

Getting on a plane has become pretty difficult thanks to 9/11 I think. Going through the security checks at airports is a nightmare now. There's so much stuff you can't take on plane now, because it could explode. And things you can't wear or the metal detector will go off and you have to be searched like you're a criminal. So I think 9/11 did change the world.

Bah, the IRA was making us queue up at airports long before Al Ciada was invented.

Everything changes the world. One grain of rice tipping the scale, and all that. The world is in a state of constant change, always has been, always will be.

This event didn't change that pattern of constant change, if that's what you mean, but it did add to it as everything else does.

    It's not a mosque, it's a community center.

Yeah, I didn't agree with you zwarrior when you called "draw Muhammad day" an act of bigotry, but I must agree with you that the opposition to the mosque is totally bigoted, and the same goes for the pastor trying to organise a "burn a koran" day.... what a douchbag.

Nope, the destruction of the WTC buildings didn't change a thing. Ideas, on the other hand...

I can see the logic in that statement. If the US was not involved in Middle Eastern politics and was not busy financially propping up various countries and government, I doubt the conservative Muslim movement (Sharia law, etc etc) and by default (unfortunately) the extremists would have very little problem with the US.
It is not our freedom they hate, it is our constant involvement in their countries and governmental structures they hate. I can't really blame them for that, can you? You would feel the same way if another country was constantly coming into various US states and worked to undermine the government and constantly pitted one state against another for their own gain. Sound familiar? It ought to, I think the US government refers to it as "foreign policy"
