I just read this whole thread from start to finish - following your development has been awesome and inspirational! I'm just a beginner, but some day I hope to complete the same journey you have :-)

A quick question, what media did you use in the post I've quoted below?

Mike - what can I say your sketchbook is amazing - the comment is much appreciated coming from you man. Thanks for dropping by.

A little sketch of an old pub in the style of my film's town. I doubt that this design will make it in on such short notice

Thanks KJK your *s gave this sketchbook what it needed to get over the 4* hump! Sweet.

A screenshot from the film, a little pixellated because it wasn't a full export. You have to watch the film to get the full experience when it comes out. Enjoy!

Using Digicel Flipbook....light weight indie program...actually a really weak program but it feels like paper more than most others and its really easy to animate with. I wish I had TB Harmony.

This whole sketchbook is damn lovely. Your 'toons are wonderful. So much life and character and you keep your lines simple and flowing. Even you buildings/scenes have character. I could happily live in some of the places you've drawn here. This is deffinatley another for the inspiration list.

Hey Thanks Lightship, its actually pretty amazing what you can get away with as far as minimalist backgrounds, but the styles have to match so you're 100 percent correct. If the backgrounds take the viewer out of the story and make them aware that they are watching a cartoon it has failed. Its very challenging to get the mise en scene right as well, hopefully I pulled it off. As far as more, I'll be releasing a trailer shortly, im just trying to get the audio synced up correctly with my sound designer so stay posted. In the mean time my first shipped game title was released earlier this month. A historic day for me, I';m releasing my first freelance stuff to the public! You can see more on my blog.

    Inspirational stuff.

So, as an animation student, you've probably got a good view of the animation industry. I was considering studying 2D animation to prep for working as an animator, background artist, storyboard artist, etc. And I figured I'd probably work on TV animation, with feature film 2D animation being pretty much dead. But I've heard that 3D animation might start taking over TV, the way it took over features, and honestly I'm not that interested in 3D. I realize storyboarding and character design are still 2D jobs in a 3D world, but you have to work your way up to those positions. So I'm wondering if there's any insight you can provide into any of this. I'm in the US, and the animation industry in general here probably isn't as healthy as it is in Canada, but still.

You're pretty much spot on with most of what you said, but 2d isnt dead in the TV industry, not by a long shot. Its so much cheaper to produce a 2d program than a 3d. TV doesnt make much money as it is so if the overhead is lower its more enticing for studios to take on the project. On the contrary, most animators start their careers as storyboarders and work up from there but some like it and stay. Toronto is coming in to the largest boom of TV work available since the early 90s-late 80s when all of those cartoons that we loved as children were coming out. Its much cheaper to go to school in Canada and if you can brave the cold weather (still not as cold as Maine or Wisconsin) and you'll likely find some work when you get out if you work hard (the trick is getting accepted in the first place). LA probably has the only large scale industry hub in the states, but theres also some work in NYC.

Sometimes I really wish there was a "Thanks for this entire thread" button. But since there isn't, I am just going to come out and say it: Thank you for this entire sketchbook, there is something truly satisfying about your work, especially your pencils. I will definitely keep checking back. And, congrats on the game project as well!

Hmm. So you don't see 3D overtaking 2D on TV any time within the next 5-10 years? Or ever? I figured the cost of 3D was going down. Maybe 2D is as well, with the move away from traditional cel animation to ... whatever it is they do now. Flash and Toon Boom and stuff?

I'm torn between a future as a freelance illustrator (and therefore a hermit) and going into TV animation (and therefore being around people, having relatively more stable work, etc).

What kind of work are you hoping to get after you graduate?

Yep 2d isnt going anywhere. 3d prices might be coming down but thats only because they are doing more and more minimal animation. Its still far easier to rig and model a flash/toonboom character than one in maya. There will always be a demand for 2d animation in television. I hope this helps.

Here is the trailer to my film, check it out! If you like it, share it with your friends! Follow my blog for more updates or the release dates and the 'art of' Ragen.
