    My painting thread

I haven't picked up a brush for over 20 years and decided it was about time (the kids are older) to get back into the saddle so to speak.

I started this a couple of days ago and can only work a relatively short time before the light changes too much. Also during the weekend I get a load of interruptions. I'm going to need some more candles as I've already been through two. Hopefully I should get in a longish session tomorrow to tackle the ornate mirror. Acrylic on canvas.

I think my photos flatter my painting - still, something to work towards. Started to get to grips with washes today before having to go out.

Had a bit of food poisoning the other day, so have only managed to do a bit more. I'll have to call this one finished as the fruit is decidedly looking worse for wear.

I'm now starting a SP on canvas. The hair shape is not right yet as the background needs work. also as I'm trying to smile, I can;t work on it for too long each session.

Really great sense of light in this and everything has a good solid feel to the forms. Beautiful color in the cloth.

Been out and about this week so have only managed to get back to it today. I had to use flash to take the picture so the colours are a bit washed out.

I think that the lighting on 4# is much more natural than the others having in mind the lit candle. I don;t know about the natural lighting you have. I can see some grear rendering on candle base and the wooden (?) frame behind. Maybe you didn't need the blue cup to your composition. Keep up man and take care!

Can't work on the portrait until the light is more consistent. Bought a pot of flowers and started this last week. I could only get back to it today as I'm not at home when there is natural light, being a vampire can be tedious at times.

Decided to loosen up a bit and crack out the palette knife. Light went a bit quick, so I'll finish it tomorrow

I hate to say, but the one in post 14 had such a lively quality to it that the flat background took away I feel. Great work all around though :]

I know, but palette knife does tend to look the same and I need to learn control with losing any expression.

Finished the one started yesterday. Getting a bit better.

I really like your still life paintings, especially the last one that you've posted. Is it already through or you still have to work on its background? I think it will look better if you apply a lighter backdrop because the black one seems to change the overall mood of your concept. Other than that though, I think this is excellent. Keep on painting!

From the DWELL thread. This is a very small acrylic, done quickly with just 5 colours.

I did another tiny picture for this year's Secret Santa. It would have been better if everything hadn't gone ape shit most of December. There are some areas that I didn't finish the same as the rest. The whole picture is 6x4 inches.

Another picture the same size. I'm enjoying painting tiny, but I still have a long way to go before I'm totally happy with the results. Planning more in the early stages I think is key to getting what I want.

If I may so humbly add in my 2 cents, try and define your darkest areas, reflected light, midtones, lights and highlight areas first, and stick to what you decide upon. It'll give your work plenty of depth.

2 cents accepted. I know I still have to work on my planning. It's just the sheer pleasure of working with oils again has blinded me while I work out how it really works after so many years away from it.

This is part way through. Currently, I'm limited in time and light, so it's going to be slow. 4 colours and 2 whites.

I reckon some monochromatic studies or a pile of drawing studies would go a long way with helping this out. I was thinking as well that overall the paintings are pleasant but are lacking a bit of punch that a wider value range would bring. Perhaps put the paintings in photoshop and turn them black/white and take a closer look at the values? Just an idea. I reckon some monochromatic studies or a pile of drawing studies would go a long way with helping this out as well.

Still need to correct the chin outline a bit, then I'll have to wait until it's totally dry before colour.

Started on a new painting - actually been working on this a while. It's still very rough.
