    Round #186 The 8th Wonder-Living in 1 of the 7

    Topic:
    #186 The 8th Wonder-Living in 1 of the 7

This one dawned on me like an epiphany on hallucinogenic drugs. Using one of the seven wonders of the world(there are two official lists that can be used for this competition). Create the creature that any one of these so called wonders was created to hide, house or protect. Get crazy with this one. If the turnout is good, I might up the deadline to a two-weeker, but I'll make it a democracy for this one if anyone objects. You'll find some useful links(which I'm not technically gifted enough to know how to rename) below.

i actually made some researsh, and studied a little bit about each wonder, i am 19 so i actually feel more comfortable with the new wonders (the ones i have grown up knowing about), but i asked my mom and she said her wonders were the ancient ones, i didnt know most of them existed, like zeus for example, i think i might decide for either the Tah , mahal, or the Colosseum, im really excited about this, its going to be my first try in this website, and well i hope everything goes fine.

i think I'm going with the Colosseum. in a secret chamber beneath it lies an immense beast that feeds off the drained blood of the gladiators that spill it above. the dead gladiators are placed in a chamber above the beasts chamber where their blood drains down to it.

    or, that's the initial idea.

    getting an idea down:

Before its destruction, the Lighthouse of Alexandria was illuminated by a creature known as the 'Pleiadiad', in honour of the Pleiades. This creature was most likely an extradimensional being of some description, probably summoned and bound by rogue Pythagoreans who had developed the necessary trigonometry to weaken the partitions between worlds.

The species is fairly benign, feeding only on the attention and adoration of the lighthouse keepers and producing a very powerful beam of light in return, which was angled to guide ships by means of a silver mirror.

It is believed that the 'Holy Living Creatures' described in the book of Ezekiel are the same species or closely related.

    Ammut under giza

Well a record 2 posts in 2 nights.
Lots of choice on this topic-
Spent an hour and a half on some enhanced scribbly loose roughs-
I went with the idea of Ammut- a half crocodile hippo thing that eats hearts
Sort of thought of a kind of solar/sun horse that might have been from helios's chariot under the lighthouse at alexandria, then did a dog/anubis bat thing...anyway.... Very loose but something at least

Holy Freaking GOD I have to do this. Obviously the first thing that comes to mind is ol' King Kong, and one of the things that I loved about the well-executed-but-deeply-flawed Jackson version was the idea of an expanded universe with a whole mythology around the giant ape.
One of the coolest concepts from the more "The Mummy"-esque original draft (1996) was the idea that the Beast God cult spread throughout Middle and East Asia. In one of the opening scenes (detailed in the script and with a featured illustration in the Extended Edition DVD), a two-story Buddhist (?) statue is broken, and underneath is a figure of a fearsome ape on a throne of human skulls. VERY cool and very inspiring!

I'll see if I can't post the screencap here, but if anyone else wants to, feel free!

Hey all. Just dropping off a work in progress. It's a psychic animal the Nebuchadnezzar II found and added to his menagerie. The hanging gardens were given to it as it's home.

    tonight's haul

Si Swe: Looking good, though I can't tell if it's sitting or levitating (though I imagine shadows will follow).

porcupine: I like the concept a lot. This pic has good potential

lach-land: Those are some great roughs, very impressed with all the ideas you've got down and how natural and dynamic they're looking. Inspirational.

(lark: Looking good. You've created a lot of mood with only a few strokes and a limited value range.

Sorry about that guys. I think I saw the 1,8 and the 7 and then ran with it to the point of mislabeling this one. Getting old.
    lach-land-Awesome sketches!
    (lark-Looking promising man.

So, we'll see how the week progresses and if the general consensus is that the deadline should be extended it will be done. Have fun everyone! I'll be checking in sporadically.

lach-land - Looking good. Don't be afraid to post big images. You're images are really nice and I can tell the Egyptian affiliation even if you hadn't had Anubis right there. Just make sure yourself a little more to work with than a combination of animals. It is a 'wonder' after all, and you're creatures look almost too plausible to be a 'wonder'.
snarfevs - Really beautiful work insofar. It's looking a little on the robotic side. It would be a good idea to make those curving shapes a little more organic. Thanks for the comment. I think shadows are a preposterous idea, though. I mean really, establishing a creature in the space? Why would I do that?... I hope it looks a little less levitate-y now.

Here's another wip for the moment. Just laying down some basic stuff right now.

    Cool

well i actually dont have a nice story for my creature, but its the sealed monster of the tah mahal, actually the top of that building was the egg holding it, but it was born before it was suposed to, so he wasnt fully developed.... well that was the idea, i dont know if it makes sense or not but whatever, the important part of this is:

i would like to have as much critiques as i can, so go ahead and be honest and hard.

im still not sure about its arms, i might change that later.

hope you like it its my very first work here and im really interesting in learning and improving, so maybe there isnt a best way to do that, than learning from you ;D

lach-land - Very nice sketch there, Ammut always been one of my favourite mythological creatures so gonna be fun see how it turn out!

Snarfevs - Those colors look great, maybe it nedds something to make it look just little more alive?

Si Swe - Love the head and antlers, it looks divine. It looks kinda emaciated(sp?) tho, some priced wonder belonging to a king and with another wonder built to house it should be well kept and fed I think.

Xeinnex - looks like it suits the story, I like the idea with those weird arms, fits the undeveloped part. The mouth looks kinda awkvard I think.

Heres my update, I'm not really used to draw scenery and structures so takes ages get it right. Crits are apprecited!
