Talking Count Blackula's Daily Sketch Challenge

All comments and crits are strongly encouraged. I'm working on getting better at rendering anatomy and making backgrounds that aren't solid colors. I would also like to make my paintings more interesting. I'm still trying to figure out what that means.

A bit about me: I love conceptart, and have been a lurker for years. My friend has been hassling me to make one of these things for a while, so here I am. I'm 23 and an art major at a big university in Maryland. The art school is pretty awful and is more focused on contemporary abstract art. In a perfect world, I would have gone to SVA, Ringling or SCAD. That stuff costs money, though...

I've been drawing for about 9 years. I started doing digital drawings and paintings about 5 years ago when I was in the prime of my "I love anime" phase. I got off that and started liking American comics when I was a senior in high school. I draw a lot of portraits and I have a webcomic I'll probably show you guys at some point (or you could just click my sig).

My favorite artists are Marko Djurdjevic, James Jean, and Alex Maleev.

I'll be dumping paintings and sketches in here periodically... All crits and comments are welcome.

My realistic goal is to spend more time on my work. I want to see how something would look if I put in 30+ hours into it. My lofty goal is to paint covers for Marvel, DC or Image... any of the big comic companies. I'd also love to do illustrations for one of those geeky RPG or video game places.

welcome ! your good with portraits, I like seeing your paintings. They have a good value range and interesting color schemes! If you don't mind a crit, some of your poses seem static to me, try doing some gesture drawings? That should help out! Also study up the muscular and skeletal systems~ Keep up the painting from life and photo's good start!

Hey Count, just checkin in with ya'! I don't see any new work so I hope you're still working away. I just posted a new pic, tell me what ya' think. By the way, one of my sore spots is trying to make believable backgrounds/ enviroments for my characters. Maybe we can challenge each other to some landscapes/ cityscapes/ etc. Let me know!

    Heidamonster, I accept your challenge!!!

    Omerta, ty.

    Swinsea- hello, old friend.

So, I spent two classes sketching Daredevil yesterday... When I got home, I colored it. Hope you guys like it. Crits welcome. I know I elongated his body a bit too much, but I find that limbs look more acceptable longer than shorter.

Hey there Pretty good start to your thread! Well done!
You look like you know what you're doing, sooo... just do more of it. You know, painting and drawing from life and from reference.
I would advice more focus on the drawing part though. Do lots and lots and lots of line sketches to get a solid grasp on your anatomy and proportions, so that you won't have to make up excuses for stretching daredevils When you've got a solid drawing, the painting becomes that much easier.
    Good luck and keep posting!
When in doubt, run and shout.

Ok, challenge on! What should our first enviroment be? Maybe we could start with something simple like a landscape? I got tell ya I just finished taking Jason Manley's color theory streaming class, so get ready! You should check it out, it's only $10!!! I like what ya' got goin' on with the daredevil piece! Were you lookin at a little David Mack when ya' did that one? Hit me up in my SB when you're ready to start our challenge! Keep goin' Count!

I like how your style is sketchy without being so distracting. I want to do that with my own paintings but I get anxious at the thought of not getting everything nice and tight, lol. I look forward to seeing more from you~
