Reutte's little pencil scratchings (Nudity)7/6 Update

    Hello!

EDIT 2/20/11: I've finally gotten my hand on a camera so I can start updating my sketchbook again. Unfortunately the quality of my photos isn't great but that's all I got now.

I've finally gotten up enough nerve to start a sketch blog here on Conceptart. I'm a hobby artist who enjoys drawing but I'm not very good at it. I need to improve across the board. I don't know if I will ever become good enough that people might consider paying for my art someday. My final goal more or less is to be able to draw scenes from my imagination fully colored ect without having to need references for every tiny detail. I don't know if that will ever be 100% possible but who knows.

I enjoy drawing animals, plants, and I'm warming up to gesture drawings and people. I'm not a big fan of mechanical stuff, guns, and/or robots.

Any critique or feedback is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Hey. Welcome to CA.

Nice sketches you've got there. I like the dog's one especially

I suggest you draw more with forms than just outlines... it gives you a better understanding of how you draw them in different views. If you want to draw from imagination, you have to study whatever you are drawing.

If you are interested in drawing better figures, i suggest you download the ebooks of Andrew Loomis. They are free. VERY HELPFUL.
    http://alexhays.com/loomis/

    Use it well. Keep drawing

Thanks Fenixx, I'm trying to work more with forms.

More Sketches. I tried some cross hatching and seriously failed.

I like the direct outlines that you do; clean and unfussy. The mushroom piece is very nice. Drawing more from observation than photos will help and do read those Loomis books.

I agree with BlackSpot ... do some real still life studies... and not just outlines.... maybe take a shampoo bottle, a shoe, a fruit ... whatever. Arrange them in some nice place where good amount of lights falls (so that you get highlights, midtones and shadows). Draw it... try to observe the values and the forms.

One very basic but very useful lesson i learned from Scott Robertson's tutorials :

    FORM CHANGE = VALUE CHANGE.

Use that well. Look at your subject, and see how a value changes when the form changes.

    Keep practicing.

I've been bad with updating. It's going to get worse since I'm going to lose my scanner in 5 days.

However, I'm still drawing. I'm sorry to say that I haven't done much life drawing though I have tried to work more with forms rather than outlines. I also tried some knot work.

Kidnap that scanner or get a cheap camera. The expression on that cheetah is priceless.

Nice start to a sketchbook, those studies from life are really coming along well . Too bad about the scanner/camera, that sounds like a pain... but I'll be really interested to see how your drawings are coming out as soon as you get a hold of one~

Unfortunately, the end of 2010 wasn't so good for drawing/art for me because I managed to be an idiot and I cut through my thumb on my writing hand. So I spent the end of November/December with stitches and regrowing my thumbnail and unable to hold a pencil. I wasn't as productive as I would have liked but I'm posting some stuff that I got done. I'm also hammering through the Loomis books.

    Another update.

I decided to try some of the perspective exercises from the tutorial forum. Some weren't too bad but once I hit 3 viewpoint perspective, things get crazy.

More random sketches. Me trying to apply some of the perspective practice into actual pictures. It didn't turn out as well as I wanted it too.

Hey thanks for stopping by my SB. These perspective studies are looking fantastic. I'd love to see some darker shading going on and more tonal stuff. Keep it up!

Not too much to post this week. Did a lot of hand gestures but they were hideous, so I'll practise more before I post hands.

Not much to post at all sadly. I've got a huge exam coming up in 2 months so time is going to be tight. But I want to get back to updating every week. I'm trying to get better with values and gradients.

Haha, I also need to upload smaller pictures. These images are getting kinda big.

Got some improvement in your latest pieces. The turnip looks very good to me. Well made forms overall. I think the only thing that makes it odd is all three tend to be floating on the page. This is not a bad thing, but can be little distracting. To give it a since of resting on something, you can sketch in the cast shadow; doesn't need to be detailed, just enough to ground it.

Lamp looks pretty good, too. Good job with the highlights. It just looks a little wobbly. It may be the base that's throwing me.

Nice work, keep studying. For now I'd like to see a lot more lines in your artwork - get a blue or red non-photo (it shows up on the scanner if you don't take it out of the RGB channels) and figure out the form underneath the lines. Right now you're outlining and losing a lot of the actual study - really see the basic shapes underneath the animals.

I think your studies are coming along nicely. For the perspective studies you might want to try moving the vanishing points farther away from the page because when they're too close on the page the objects start to look skewed or distorted.

Hmm I see a lot of strengths here! Good luck on your exam firstly.
Second, if you want to improve values, study photos, and study other artists still lives and such--see what value choices they are making. You're off to a very good start. Also, loosen up a bit every now and then. It's great you are so clean and tight (it will really help you later on down the road) but its also making your animals and such really stiff. Get some gesture drawings in there, and work on the flow of things, and how their bodies move. not just what they look like can't wait to see more!!
