    Red Dragons, WIP (update1)

EDIT: scroll down to the latest post for updates!

Hey guys. My current side project is to go through the Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual and pick out a few different ones to try my own version of, to help beef up my portfolio. I've started with the Red Dragons.

This here is a simple "body concept" I'm working on from a rough sketch. It's a bit blurry looking as it's not very high-resolution. The plan is for me to use this as a good reference for my larger illustration (more on that later). This is also currently WIP, I'd greatly appreciate any outside viewpoints on it at the moment

Here's some earlier head studies I tried out:

I like it. I like the deign, the colors, I think more attention could be given to the wings, seems like those were rushed compared to the body (or maybe you just didnt get to them yet). And his head seems too large, which is fine if that's the way you intended it, I just think it doesnt make it as intimidating

Overall it's looking good. The design of the head looks great, but the body is a little lacking in power. It seems a bit dainty and weightless. I also tend to like my dragons a little longer in the neck, but that's a matter of taste.

I agree with Elwell in the weight issue..

Also, I think it could use some more defined anatomy in the wing root part, as it has on the remaining limbs. Right now it looks like bone coming out straight

    Great work

You're missing some mass and definition in the chest and shoulders, there's a lot of musculature there (neck, arms, wings, chest, back) and a lot of it is fairly well-defined.

All good points, thanks guys! Working on it a little more, still not done...Really need to figure out the feet properly, and beef up the hind legs to make it less dainty.

First off, I'd just like to say how nice those scales and all the little details are looking! (: I really like the colour variations you've got going on here too.
As for crits, it feels like the head is a bit too large for the body, maybe resizing it slightly and making the chest a tad deeper would help.
And you said you still had to beef the legs up, I think you should also lengthen them slightly too, as it would help with adding a bit of weight.

This is what I came up with. I'm not the best with anatomy and such, but I hope it helps! c:

I see what you mean! I think I'm too used to drawing and referencing mammalian anatomy so maybe that's what was clouding my vision. Thank you for the paintover Time for revisions...
