    Cozmo's Gotta Fee-vah...

Hey, everyone. I thought I'd kick off my own sketchbook. This is a smattering of what I've done in the past. Some of it is a bit old, but I have a bunch of new stuff that I'll be posting soon. For now I've posted all people, but I also really dig drawing things...guns, ships, whatever.

    Couple of quick points:
    1) I don't normally draw manga. I can appreciate good manga (I love the Battle Angel Alita series), but I am another artist who gets depressed whenever I see the crappily-scrawled manga clogging the arteries of DA. But I'm really happy with the picture I did of Rally from Gunsmith Cats, so I posted it.

    2) All of these faces are drawn from photo references, with the exception of the blonde girl and the guy with his hair blowing in the wind...those are straight from my imagination.

I welcome any and all comments. I really want to push myself, so feel free to say what you want.

    Thanks!

I have to apologize for the low-quality of these...my scanner is kind of goofy, so these were taken with my camera phone. Hopefully you can still tell (kind of) what I've done.

The girl with the clown makeup was done with ballpoint pen, and the rest were done with pencil.

The picture of Medusa (the comic book character) was done for a friend. I used to work part-time at Home Depot, and the store manager was a huge comic collector. He saw one of my drawings and gave me permission to personalize peoples' aprons if they wanted. So this was a sketch I did for my friend Sarah's apron.

Also making an appearance are David Beckham, an eyeball, a futuristic hand-cannon, and a speeder bike.

    Happy Hump Day, everyone!

    Here's a couple more.

The little dude was inspired by my 2-week free trial for the game City of Heroes.

The bottom sketch is an older one. I used to be in the National Guard, and my unit got sent to Italy for 9 months. I visited Venice a bunch of times, and the first trip there I bought this little sketchbook with a skyline of Venice along the bottom. This picture was drawn on the train on my way back from that first trip.

*I'll re-upload some of these once I get my scanner working again.*

Chromion: I'll definitely be posting new stuff, ideally tomorrow or the next day! Thanks for checking it out!

IcedEarth: Thanks for the comment! Glad I haven't posted crap, though I know I can improve. I think one improvement would be my scanning the drawings instead of using the camera phone.

PNate: Glad you like the marker piece...I've loved those grayscale markers ever since I saw "The Art of Star Wars." I need to get a new set before I can do any more drawings like that, but once I get some, you bet I'll be posting more. Probably won't be manga, but hopefully more like concept art.

Also, I really appreciate the advice about the heads. Proportions are a huge challenge for me...usually it's not like they're massively lopsided, but just enough to make the subjects look unsettlingly odd, like they're not from this planet.

*EDIT* Nate, I think I know what part of the problem is...a lot of times when I draw I sit at a table, so my perspective can be [negatively] affected by that. I still do need to work on proportions, but I think drawing on a different surface would help.

Been a while since I've updated...I've been busy with work, but now with a couple of weeks off, I've got lots of time for doodlin'...which brings to mind a great line from the BBC version of The Office:

"Keep up the doodlin', keep up the doodlin'. Pipe dreams are good. Then when it doesn't happen, at least you can say, 'I tried.'"

Anyway, I found an old piece I entered into the county fair a couple of years ago. It didn't win, but I like it. So here it is.

More faces. I know the brunette girl's eyes are goofy. This was before I learned about that "drawing faces and hands" book.

Thank you, both of you! Life has been pretty bat-scat crazy the last six weeks, and I've barely had time to do anything outside of work and house projects. But life will be slowing down dramatically in about a week, so hopefully then I'll be able to sit down and actually devote some time to drawing...I really miss it!

Jesus Food, I'm saving up for some graded markers (Dick Blick sells some generic Prismacolor knock-offs that are reported to be very good), and then I'm going to be doing more pen-and-ink drawings.

Raminafshari, I appreciate the encouragement! I think the soldier is probably my favourite too. My goal is to take soldier pictures and "futurize" them. We'll see how that goes...

great stuff! one suggestion i have is to pay attention to the shapes beneath the faces and stuff your drawing, it will make them look more 3d and dynamic. but your excellent and on the right path! keep up the hard work

I'm a huge fan of the Chronicles of Narnia, and A Horse and His Boy is possibly my favourite of the seven. So here's a horse, maybe it's Bree. Sketched in ink pen (nothing fancy...probably the kind you get at the checkout counter at the supermarket).

It's been busy at work lately, so my creativity has largely been spent on that. That's the trouble with having a arty profession, you often find that your creative juices have been spent by the time you get home, so it's hard to motivate yourself to do anything else. But drawing has been a nice way for me to exercise a different part of my brain.

Anyway, my scanner isn't working again, so here are a few things I've done courtesy of my phone's camera. For whatever reason, I'm on a bit of a horse kick right now. The four heads were all done on one page of my sketchbook, and the full-body shot was on a full page.

The last one is "self-portrait with gas mask."

*Note: The scanner is back up, so I've got cleaner versions of most everything.

Here's a couple more. The steeple is pen and ink with grayscale markers. I'm particularly proud of the motorbike, because that was drawn totally from memory, and at an angle, to boot. Plus, who doesn't love a good Triumph?

It's amazing what you can do when your computer is constantly needing work. I drew this guy at work yesterday. Partially inspired by Joaquin Phoenix. I came up with two of the three catchphrases. The middle one I stole from Homsar, off of Homestar Runner (worth your time to research, believe me).

    Happy New Years, friends!

Sketch of my wifey, done on newsprint with pencil. I know her eyes are a little odd...I just picked up a copy of "Drawing Heads and Hands" today.

*Note: She's a lot prettier in real life.

Quick sketch I did of Boba Fett in a notebook with a black ink pen. Also is an old drawing of mine I found, where I drew a picture of Michaelangelo from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This was the cover of one of the issues from their "City At War" story arc. Good stuff (the comic, not my drawing). I was all of 15 or 16 at the time...
