I remember someone once said the name Picasso so it sounded like "pick asshole." Exactly.

Van Rijn is from the the Rhine area where he was born, and how it SHOULD be pronounced, but the Dutch say it slightly differently, so blame them. You could distract people and insert Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, which is his full formal name. That should shut them up.

For now, I think pronouncing it as "Rem-brunt Fun Rain" is the best for me. "Harmenszoon" = Ha-men-zoon? LOL

@ Brianvds = When you become famous, then I'll check out how to pronounce it. For now, I'll try "Spoo-yee" and "Spay".

Just about, but the Dutch (and Afrikaners like me) pronounce the R out loud: "Harrrrrr-men-soon" rather than "Hah-men-soon" as English speakers tend to pronounce it.

Well, it is actually just about in between those two pronunciations, so you are doing well. You will probably master it long before I am famous. :-)

In fact, the distinction exists, as there's only one "proper" pronunciation according to the Royal Spanish Language Academy; other thing is people doing it or not, but is a matter of local accents.

Diego Velázquez; full name: Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez; pronunciation: Dee-ego Ve-lath-keth (z in velazquez is equivalent to [ð] or [θ] on International Phonetic Alphabet)

I've yet to meet a non-scandinav who can pronounce my name right..

But when talking about REAL artists, I spent quite a while saying "Burger-O"...

You'd think "Slash" would be easy enough, but everyone forgets about the silent S's and A...

Hello, I am a native french speaker, and perhaps I can help. I will try to write the sounds as besta as I can.

    2) Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres : Jean (Like in Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek) 0-goost - doh-mee-neek Aingr (a bit like Anger but more nasal)

    3) Eugene Delacroix : Ew-Jane Duh-law-crew-aw (emphasis on the aw)

    5) Seurat : Sir Rah

    6) Edgar Degas : Edgar Day-gah
