One thing that I'm not seeing in your work is material rendering. In example the last portrait of the girl, her face is portrayed in the same material way as her clothes. It wouldnt hurt to have some practises where you mainly focus on that Hope that helps

Sorry nothing lately because of final exams. Actually have one more paper tomorrow, but not in the mood to study. Which will probably screw up my final grade. It's worth 65% of my overall result.

Currently working on a piece showing Joan of Arc, but only after I started the line drawing did I realize that her head is too small to see very clearly. But I can't make it bigger without having to redo everything, and time is short (deadline: 18 Oct, and still 2 more paintings to research and do!)

Back from a long exam break! My Computing results came back today, got an A, so that's pretty good. I submitted my art project (for an exam) so it's time for me to move on to working on less artistically stimulating exams.

Made a cute little dinosaur (apatosaurus-stegosaurus hybrid) out of Sculpey as well, but my brother broke its spines. I'll post a photo when (if) I find the missing spines and glue them back on.

Below: the 3 images in my project, "Heroes as We Know Them". In chronological order or being painted - the first one is Hua Mulan as previously mentioned, second is Joan of Arc dictating a letter, last one is Atalanta doing some stretches. At the top of a flight of stairs. I don't know. I was trying out Painter for the Joan painting so it looks rather different from the other two, and I was totally inefficient while doing that one because I was unfamiliar with it.

Sorry no actual drawings this update. I just checked out an anatomy book from the school library (I didn't even know they had books like these! it's all physics and outdated Delphi textbooks mostly) so will be doing some drawings from there.

An internal hordeolum appeared this week behind my left eyelid, next to the internal chalazion which has been there for almost 5 months now. The chalazion should have healed ages ago by itself, I'm not sure why it's still there...doctor's eyedrops didn't help so I just left it there after the first 2 months :-/

I printed my 3 digi works and spent $47 on IKEA frames to submit them for school:

hey krysjez, I'm really jealous looking at that last dump! You already have framed paintings?? Since they are already done i won't offer too much critique, although i've noticed that in the second painting the perspective is very exagerrated - if you look at her feet compared with that of her shoulders and the map and flag on the wall, it seems like she's a giant because the perspective is so extreme. But maannn am i jealous of the complexity of these! Wish i had that kind of patience! I'd like to see some more master studies like the Thirion on the last page - i think drawing and painting realistically is your weakness at this point. But you're off to a greatt start, lets see more updates!!

PS that comment you left in my SB was really helpful but i'm not sure i understand fully what you mean about the colors! Maybe if you ever have the time with a quick digital painting you could show a few process shots?

heya sorry i havnt been in here for so long
in your latest digital pieces i think that you are not establishing the light source enough.
maybe pushing the darks darker and putting a few particularly bright highlights might help.

Thanks for that Raffix. I'm a little afraid of value contrasts...when I was doing the latest digitals I was actively trying to push the darks down, but I guess I was still too timid about that then?

Lots of pictures this time because I finally brought my sketchbook to school and scanned stuff.

1) quick drawings of people doing archery
4) observational drawing of sea from deck of ship (blinding sunrise) - quite sucky!
6) drawing from photo found online. I like the feel of this one.
7, 8) stuff from July - people in the Immigration queue at Taipei airport and a semi-observational drawing of Taichung countryside(?) done on the coach while it was pouring outside
9) umm
10) trying Loomis method of constructing heads. Heads still seem off though. Need to do more observational studies.
11) slow descent back into anime
12) had this idea about someone who travels the world with just a map. Lower left, trying to draw my hand.
13) most of this page is junk but I sort of like (14) though now I see her eyes are iffy.

Every time I do eyes they turn out differently shaped and look like they belong on different heads!

I loved the picture of the girl with flowers in her hair, interesting use of shading on her dress.

Anyways! As a small crit, I'd love to see you pushing the contrast in that landscape picture you did, other than that I'd say you're doing brilliantly so keep up the good work!

Hey, thanks for your reply in my sketchbook Nice studies! It's hard coming from a manga style to a more realistic one, so I can sympathise, however by the looks of it you're well ahead of me. Maybe you can use your new knowledge to try and develop an even better manga style; the thing I like about mangas such as Death Note is that you can see that they've studied anatomy quite well, and they aren't stylized to the point of being deformed.

Anyway, that notion is running away with me I think, so I'll just say thanks again and keep up the good work

that last pencil study is looking good - you are obviously working hard whenever you have the time and thats the most important thing!

The traditional studies are really helping, and personally I think thats the best way to go in terms of getting your eye in an learning about line weight and width. So keep it up!

Hello again!

I actually like the watercolour, the colours you used are really nice.
What might improve it is a little bit of definition.
I'm no expert, but usually when I do a watercolour I do this:
1. Pencil sketch.
2. Pen it in.
3. Rub out the sketch lines.
4. Paint.

That way the there's no fluffy pencil lines in the way.


But anyways, it's good to experiment with different mediums and to paint what you see. So keep up the good work!

Thanks, Naidy. I used to do watercolors with very clear outlines too. I guess I was trying to see if I could do it like a 'proper' painting with no outlines.

looking good! about the whole contrast thing and putting in darker tones, i have read before that what you might try is painting/drawing your piece up to the point that you think it is 'finished', go away then come back later and put in some shadows that are darker than any you're currently using. maybe this doesnt work but hey trying it wont hurt.

on the watercolour thing i would not suggest using pen over the pencil.as long as use dont put loads of really heavy pencil lines down they dnt show too much, and if you use pen it creates loads of hards edges that can lead to the 'cartoony' effect.

Oh yeah, I forgot pens make things toony.

There's also sketching the lines with a really thin paintbrush in a very dilluted nuetral/base tone.
Or using those sketch pencils which come in colours like sienna, which work for most things and don't make things all greyish.

Just keep on experimenting.

The school gave us some art materials. There is some kind of chalky pencil marked "Conté a Paris" but I don't know what they are exactly.
