Hi again.

The names Jack, i'm 18 years old and an aspiring character / environment concept artist.

Here is my old sketchbook: Here - but now that college is over i want a fresh start.

Here is a quick digital piece, I was trying to grasp a new technique for quicker painting, took around an hour n half. Although unfortunatly i forgot to resize the image to a higher resolution until near the end which is why is quite bad quality, or atleast one reason..

& also a page of expression studies and sketches from reference.

I'm going to be attending Plymouth College of Art, technically not a Uni, but it's a Uni level course ;P

Some quick Sihlouettes as i have been neglecting studying sihlouettes for far too long now, and i'm really pleased with the results so far.

Expect alot more of these to come along with more anatomy studies.

I feel as if everyone is going to Uni on this site I feel so youuuuung :<
Love the digital stuff, especially the colouring - the technique, and the palette.
Also, awesome thumbs, love the different designs. I love the first one on the last row.
I saw that video also, and had a craving for doing thumbs, but my mouse's being an ass and won't comply!

Great Idea doing those thumbnail drawings, there are so helpful. Anything where you can get alot of Ideas down and think about what youre doing, and not necessarily spending forever to do, is really really helpful. I like long studies, but Id say for learning quantity is far better than quality. Since your bound to make mistakes you should make as many as you can as quick as you can My layout lecturer always says, you need to do 1000 drawings before you even begin to become good.
Also something I wanted to comment on, since Im in the mood to type Was at the start of your SB you say you want to become a character / environment concept artist. Now I dont know you or anything, but I would be wary of narrowing down your career options when your still a student, its good to think about of course and it gives you drive. But what I mean to say is you should focus on what you like to do, rather than what you want to do. (this may not apply to you but better I dont hold back on my hunch)

Malakuko: Yes definitaly! i've always heard everyone talking about how important sihlouettes / thumbnails are but i've never really given it a shot and now i understand. Thank you for feedback and the advice, i appreciate it. I've always enjoyed conceptart and i love to create it, though i shall try not to restrict my options too much.

Here's some quick anatomy practice from this morning, the top left is Solid Snake from MGS 4 quickly sketched during the loading screen. Sorry if they are too big, gotta go out now and don't have time to resize =/

Tom Fenton: It's actually a FD but sure i'll most likely keep this sketchbook up n running throughout all of my time at uni, i hope but you are correct, we are the future n all that

Heres some more anatomy, this time i'm focusing on the legs which is another one of the areas that i've tried to avoid the most though now i've started it its much easier than expected, theres plenty of rythems that you can memorise in order to create the muscles and forms.

Heres some more sihlouettes, i enlarged my favourite 3 and i might develope them further at some point, though i'm not sure if its as strong as my first bunch. Best get working on some more then, more anatomy next!

Very good environments I must say, but to get better at anatomy, do massive studies, you can discover A LOT just by googeling muscle pics and stuff, also George Bridgman studies are extremely helpful, didnt see any studies of his work here.

heix33: Thank you! I have studied from bridgeman in the past and posted some pieces in my previous sketchbook, i must go back to him - thanks for reminding me and for the feedback.

heres some more legs, digital this time as scanning is getting annoying. Also heres some developement on 3 of my previous sihlouettes, though i'm not really pleased at all - going to go back to the sihlouettes and re-develope them with a different technique as i feel they were ruined this time. (unfinished as i'm not happy with them at all) Also the creature-like sihlouette really shows that i need to study creature anatomy, which i will definitly get to after i'm happy with my human anatomy.

Re-Developed one of my sihlouettes from before, much happier with the result now. Put them side-by-side to compare them, i really like this process and i wouldn't have thought about half the details without the sihlouette if i was going to sketch straight away.

ah dude i'm loving the anatomy studies! I'm needing to start some of those, and nice thumbnail chars, keep it up!

Another quick pair of legs + torso, trying to use the technique that i have learnt previously but in a different pose. Will post more later - gotta do errands for the parents now D:

Very nice anatomy skills! I struggle alot with getting arms and legs right so seeing your pretty much spot-on studies makes me wanna practise them!
However as for critique, personally I think you should spend more time working on faces; they just aren't to the same skill as everything else.

But all in all, very nice sketchbook so far Keep up the good work!

Your digital work is pretty cool. Id say after you do some studies, flip the page over and draw them from memory, it can help sometimes.

Sulphur: Thank you! ah yes i really do need to study faces they definitly my weak point. I'm currently working through my anatomy books page by page so hopefully i'll get to the head/face sections soon and will be able to make them much stronger. Thanks again!

Nonobot: *high five* thank you, that sounds like a good idea - i've been doing some promising studies lately but i really need to see how well i cope without the reference, i'll give it a shot.

Here's a pose from my imagination, no reference, in order to see how far i've come with my anatomy studies and what has actually stuck and what i need to repeat. So far i'm very pleased with the overall look, i still need more arm / hand / head & face studies though.

Somethings bugging me about those legs, they look kinda big... hmm

Hmm seem be uploading smaller pieces at the moment, i'm having to book lots of train tickets and university accomodation related things for this friday which is taking up a lot of my time ... however the 5 hours on the train should hopefully prove to be a solid ammount of time to produce a lot studies.

The legs at the top of the page were un-referenced i think they are mostly alright apart from i'm unsure if the top of the legs (thighs?) are too chunky, as i thought they would be slighly enlarged due to the pose. The rest of the drawings are referenced from sport photos such as football, boxing and dancing and i wanted to achieve a good flow of movement in the poses, which wasn't entirely successful.

Going to go watch Avatar for some inspiration and do some more studies also, cya later!

Some more leg practice but also started studying the feet, now i've found some techniques i surprisingly find feet and legs quite fun to draw!

The lower half of the 2nd piece is all unreferenced which i am very proud of as they all look quite decent to me!

Hey man good for you starting a sketchbook for Uni, I wish i did that 2 years ago haha, I think your really excelling at the quick thumbnails on photoshop very good use of negative space etc very inspiring I hope you get round to developing some of those ideas. Your anatomy studies are also improving and much like Sulphur i'd like to see you do some faces too .
