Damn dude, these are really nice. Was this for a game, show, movie? Did you take photo ref for these personally, or do you just have a nack for anatomy?

Cheers for looking thescala. These were for a game but the company got closed by the publishers so it never got past the vertical slice stage, it looked a promising game.
Pose wise it's a mixture- the first one I definately used ref for the pose because I needed to know how someone would correctly hold a 'bullpup' configured gun. I think all the 'Taliban' characters are just non referenced poses, I could be wrong though. All the faces are made up , bar the pilot running from the downed apache which was based on a turnaround photo ref for the 3d model.

Very nice art, though I'd imagine politics got the better of this one... hope they find a good home someday, the first one is really quite striking.

    Here's some more stuff

With these 4 you have to play 'guess the actor' they are based on without looking exactly like them.
I will put some environment stuff next

Bruce Willis is in the game?? Sweet.
Anyways, that's some nice stuff, I'm seriously envious of those first three. You really nailed the "action" aspect of them.

Concepts for Afghanistan -Now with Environments-13 July

These are in the order they would have appeared in the game, starting at an arena, going through a warehouse district then finishing at a disused hotel.

I've spent the last two years of life practically living in that country, working.. no prizes if you guess what my job is, and no confirmation.

Love your work, it's brilliant, nicely detailed! brilliant anatomy and poses action packed, really good to look at, if you'd like I can take some phots of standard issued equipment issued to regular forces like 16 air assault brig, and some spec ops equipment if you like.

    Brilliant work again, sub'd

    Hi JRStagg
Thanks so much for your post. I can't you tell how much I appreciate what you have to say about this work and especially chuffed that I got it generally right.
I would love to have some photos of the equipment definately although at the minute I'm not working on anything military workwise, but personally I am always interested in military kit.

Now your job, I'm guessing you work as a tour rep for club 18-30? I know Afghanistan is always a popular place to party. ; )

Oh yeah, we get the odd English 'Tourist' pop up, we have to go to their hotel and 'DRAG' them out for a night on the town, then stick them on the 'Appropriate' flight back home, It's all fun and games!

I'll see what I can do for you, I have some phot's of Afghanistan if you'd like to brows a thread I'll make, I'll update this post with the link to it, and you can trawl through them, for security reasons some specific kit and personnel will be altered including me.

Actually, if I may make a suggestion? You may want to vary the values a little bit with the characters' clothing. Some of the pouches look like they're growing out of the rest of the figure's clothing...

Cheers for posting Falchion and I agree wholeheartedly. I did these a couple of years ago and all I see is lots of glaring errors when I look at them now, but they were a good experience to do and I like to think if I did them now I would do them in half the time and a lot crisper and balanced.

One of the soldiers' face looks a lot like Bruce Willis haha. Bw I think some or rather most of the environment concepts are flabbergasting. Keep it up.

Nice work, I like the rendering on the characters in action. Just to add to Falchion's comment about clothing, they feel heavy, thick, and coarse (almost like a towel) instead of flowing cloth, unless of course that is the type of material that is worn in the area?

Desert cam or 'Descam' as we call it, is of a thick heavy material, the sand in a place like Afghanistan is about the same roughness as sand paper in places, in others it's like talconpowder or baby powder, It's the baby powder you wan't to look out for because once it seeps deep into your clothing it acts like acid and renders cloths obsolete.

Not to mention the rocks, from the smoothest pebble to rocks so sharp they can cut through a knee pad like a knife through butter.

Thanks JRStagg I couldn't have answered that better if I tried.

Here's a few more odds and sods ( I think this is just about it for work on this project- it was a couple of years ago so there might be some stuff I've forgot about but probably not worth showing anyway )

    some turnarounds.

I was about to go to bed before a stint away, but lucky I saw the E-mail pop up, Awesome! outstanding work! I'm away for a few months but I have a request if you find your self doing some thing military related, Could you do a sort of guide to the techniques you use to build your digital paintings, for the moment I'm even lesser a Photo shop mong, I need to see guides to construct these pieces with no babble, I was told a while ago to 'Wire, Block, Build, Blend'

Wire frame your character or scene,
    Block the lighting,
    Refind or smooth the lighting,
    Blend it..

    Little... er... lack luster,..

you don't have to do it, no idea how long I'm away for, Keep going amazing work!

I certainly will have a go JRStagg , although I'm not exactly consistant in how I work, but I am probably a bit more disciplined than when I did this lot at the very least. I will have a go at summat and see how it turns out.

I really enjoyed looking at all the design sketches, paintings, call sheets, and environments. A good look at the game design process. I'm very impressed with your sketching style on the faces, really good line quality there. Thanks for sharing your work with us!

I think the linework stands up a lot better than some of the shoddy photoshop work that's for sure.
