Hey everybody, here are a couple studies I did recently to get it started. My biggest weakness right now is painting from my head so hopefully there'll be improvement over time. ANY crits or comments are welcome
Btw, the majority of the studies I'll post are from photos that don't belong to me, unless they're still lifes.

Whew, looks good so far, but the one thing that stands out to me is on the first image, I've never really seen a pair of breasts like that...? They don't sag to the sides at all, which is what breasts naturally do, making the nipples seem unnaturally close together. Even small breasts would have more distance, I think. And keep in mind that in females, the breasts are angled 60 degrees away from one another, so if her torso is facing the viewer, neither would be straight-on.

Just my two cents, take with salt as I am not very good yet. I would like to see more!

I always assume that any and all sketchbooks are going to include nudity. Seems natural to me.

Marlee-thanks for the insight, I always have trouble rendering the front torso/chest area :/ Creating form with light is something I'm struggling with a lot. I'll keep it in mind!

NathanH-I'm far from confident, but thank you! Process-wise there isn't much going on. Richard Schmid's "Everything I know about painting" is my bible these days, so everything in there I'm trying to apply. I was a bit worried about the nudity but it seems like everyone's sketchbook does have some, doesnt it?

Cool studies dude, there are some areas where the brushwork gets a little muddy perhaps you could simplify the strokes with more big brushwork or render it a bit more to clean it up. Your edges seem really same-ish all over this sums it up pretty well.

You’re off to a good start anyways, hope you keep updating and getting better!

Benjie-Thanks! Your advice about edges is something I'm trying to improve and I see what you mean about the muddy brushwork, I appreciate the feedback

Here's a failed still life. It's so terrible I wasn't going to post it but then I slapped my pride in the face and so here it is. There are a billion things I could blame for its lameness (the light changing every other hour) but I guess it's a sign I should do more still lifes (positive thinking, positive thinking)

You've got some amazing stuff here my friend - real pleasure to just stare at these.
Don't sweat doing the nudes - it helps with the concentration I think - keeps it exciting By the way - that last girl's hands and toes are freaking kill - I'm still going back and just staring at those. Great job!
You've got some really great complex/simple brush work that's really fun - dig it. Keep up the hard work man! (Saw you on Crimson Daggers too ) Just remember to stop when the wrist and hand fight back!

Yep - works for me, again. I think you've got a good balance of employing the time and care into the focal areas. The way you've blocked in the white sheet compared to the face and body. Perhaps you could push that a little further, just spending a bit longer on the key areas to really make them 'zing' (I think is the word ).

wow great studies! I could never bring myself to just straight out copy a photo, I get so bored! But you've done a beautiful job. Like someone else said - just variate your brushstrokes a little more. Maybe try using a different brush besides the default?

Asteriks-Yeahh, it does get really boring sometimes I'll have to take a look at some of the other brushes sometime. I just like the simplicity of the hard round but it does get repetitive. Thank you for looking!

Here's a quicker study. Tried to focus more on the colors and lighting rather than getting it exactly right. And also a couple pages of random sketches from my head. Trying to improve my imagination work, which has a long way to go.

Wow man, those figures look great. I have the same problem with brushes, I use a hard tilted elipse brush 99% of the time. It get the job done but sometimes it looks dull. Keep up the good work!

You have some very nice studies here mate, but I think you might want to take a second look at the values in a couple. Squinting and making them go fuzzy goes a long way to help see what's going on. Also, after a quick look-see it seems that in general you lose contrast as you move towards the feet of your figures. Maybe painting one of these upside down would help? (ie, head on bottom)

Anywhoo.... those are nitpicky things. You have a lovely start here and I want to see moar!!!

Alexson-Thanks dude. Yeah that hard edged brush feel is tough to lose. It looks like Bobby Chiu alters the opacity and flow a lot while he paints, I think I'll give that a shot.

are both ones I've been using a lot recently. A nifty trick is to look at nude photographers favorite images and find other photo sets through them. Endless nude references at your fingertips!

Today was one of those bad painting days for some reason :/ Anyhow, here's a study and some random sketches from my head.

We all have those bad days where a freaking stick person looks like dog poo. I hate those days. I always try and walk away -- but then I feel like I'm giving up - but if I stay and keep trying, something usually gets broken I think these are great updates - I always geek out on your paintings - Freaking sweet updates!! (the hands and feet are awesome as always!)

So for this one I tried to use a softer more textured brush but I hated it so I switched back to the ol' hard round in the middle. It's unfinished, muddy and all around crappy so I batmanized it. Better stuff to come tomorrow
