    Composition and Color Theory - Developing Moods, Narrative, and Abstraction in Art

    FOUNDATIONS | COMPOSITION & COLOUR THEORY with Jason Manley & Terry Brown

    This comprehensive class features lectures, presentations, demonstrations, and personal feedback. Students will gain an understanding of the history and development of composition over time, and across cultures. Students will be given thought provoking and inspiring assignments and will receive direct feedback, whether they are taking the class live, or On Demand (though you have to turn your homework in to get that!).

    Students attending will learn the following necessary information:

    • Hue & Saturation
    • Color Movement
    • Narrative & Cultural Color
    • Mood & Emotion
    • Composition History

    These elements are required foundations for all future artwork created by TAD students. Armed with this knowledge, students will be able to identify what is wrong with their own work, and will strengthen their ability to create cohesive and unified images. This essential class cultivates an artist's ability to create images which contain purposeful moods and helps to give emotional impact to their works from imagination, reference and life.

    With a full body of compositional theory compiled over years of studying with renown painters, illustrators, and entertainment developers and a decade of research and work by Jason Manley, TAD students will see rapid improvement in their works during and after this valuable class.

    About Jason Manley (me): Jason is the founder of ConceptArt.Org, the leading entertainment art studio Massive Black Inc. and the President of The Art Department. In his career Jason worked as a concept artist, lead artist, art director, and executive. His clients have included Activision, id software, Sony, Blizzard, EA and 170 other renown creative firms. Jason is an alumni of the Illustration Academy and the creator of the International Art and Design Workshops where he has taught composition to more than 8000 students and 400 companies from around the world.

    About Terry Brown: For 25 years Terry Brown was the Director of the Society of Illustrators in NYC. Terry has since gone on to Direct at the Norman Rockwell Museum and is of the most respected leaders in the fields of art and illustration anywhere. Terry will be presenting a very deep database of illustrations from the entire history of illustration and his knowledge of that body of work will inspire and inform.

    All classes are available On Demand hours a day and Live, this means you can attend even if you live in the farthest time zones or have work during the Live class times. On Demand students will have the opportunity to get direct input from their faculty and professional reviewers as if they were right there with you and Live attendees can speak and interact directly with their instructors.

    Supplies needed:
    Graphite and sketchbook
    Charcoal supplies (alphacolour, conte 2b, vine and charcoal paper, kneaded erasers, white rubber erasers, blades, shammy, soft cloth/rag )
    Laptop/photoshop or painter
    wacom tablet

    Hey Jason,

    Terry was never the President of the SoI.
    That is an elected position that only lasts 4 years.

    Terry was the Director, which is a full-time staff position.
    The Director, in many aspects, has much more influence over the Society than the President does; but I feel the clarification is needed.
    I'm sure Terry would agree.

    As an aside,
    I had Terry Brown as an instructor at SVA where he taught the 'History of Illustration'.
    It was a great class, and I can vouch for how brilliantly informed he is on the subject.
    You'll be hard pressed to find a better speaker.

    Graydon Parrish - Art Department Instructor Addition

    The Art Department welcomes world class artist and the foremost expert on Munsell Color Theory, Graydon Parrish to TAD. Graydon is also an expert on the art of William Bouguereau and Jean Leon Gerome. He will begin with TAD this semester with lectures and presentations in Color Theory and Composition and will assisting in Light and Form as well. We will be doing a live streaming class this coming fall as well. Graydon's bio and images are below. I grabbed a hand full off the net and he is sending me some others to share with you all. I can tell you from first hand experience that he is the single most knowledge-able color theorist I have ever crossed paths with.

    With Graydon joining us, the Austin POD can a central hub of color study in art education as we go and we are very lucky to have him assisting us with the teaching of TAD students in these classes. Without further comment, here are the pics and info you need to see.





















    Early in life Graydon Parrish realized that he wanted to be an artist, and while a senior in high school, he was one of the few students accepted to the Dallas Arts Magnet school. Yearning to paint artworks inspired by the classical past, it was not long before Parrish was studying in the New York atelier of Michael Aviano and later the Richard Lack Atelier in Minneapolis: both considered exemplars of classical art. Today, Parrish's work can be found in the New Britain Museum of American Art, Tyler Museum of Art, Mead Art Museum and private collections throughout the United States and Europe.

    But it was never an easy road for Parrish—as it is for few artists working in classic principles of art. “Training for representational painting, which includes both realism and classicism, was nearly nonexistent when I was an art student,” says Parrish. “There were few options so it was all the more miraculous that I found Michael Aviano, who not only trained painters but was a master of classical painting in his own right, doggedly preserving a vital tradition. "

    It is not only his near-fanatic study of technique that separates him from other classical artists, but also his deep understanding of the art-historical periods in which his favorite artists such as William Bouguereau lived. For instance, Parrish worked for many months as an art-historical researcher for the forthcoming William Bouguereau Catalog Raisonné and for years on the Jean-Léon Gérôme Catalog Raisonné. Most recently, he worked under Art Historian Gerald Ackerman as a research assistant and editor of the recently published Charles Barque Drawing Course, a complete course dedicated to nineteenth-century Academic drawing practice written by two of the French Academy’s greatest advocates: Charles Barque and Jean-Léon Gérôme.

    In each of these incredible research opportunities, Parrish not only studied the artist’s technique through their own original drawings and paintings, but also the history of their times, including: business practices, philosophies of art, criticism, biographical information, and how they were received by their contemporaries.

    As Parrish notes: "Only through the most arduous study can one create art. Each picture I paint is based on thorough research in the science of light, form, and technique as well as the study of the old masters—and their history. My education, therefore, has been idiosyncratic. Unable to find complete training available to the old masters, I have orchestrated my own program of learning, combining quality academics with the guidance of present-day old masters.”

    I was so impressed by the style and technique of that second-to-last image that it took me a while to realise what it was about. It doesn't let you go! Jason, Terry and this guy teaching composition and colour theory... I think I will melt.
