Ivan Aivazovsky - Ninth Wave - Help Needed

Hello,

I want to paint the Ninth Wave by Ivan Aivazovsky. Does anybody know which colors dominate this painting? Could you give me the names of the colors?

First, this is a beautiful painting and thank you for introducing this artist to me. I had never heard or seen his work until this thread.

I did spend some time searching the internet for more details but could not find anything regarding specific colors he used. And by no means am I any color expert, but here's my 2 cents.

The bright yellow appears to be a cadmium yellow(cad yellow pale, cad yellow lemon, cad yellow light). It's probably 'brighter' due to the contrasting orange-red clouds surrounding it. The clouds are a brilliant shade possibly created through a mixture of a cad yellow and a cad red, with some of the darker clouds slightly tinted with perhaps some alizarin crimson. The water is a different beast and appears to me to be closer to a cobalt green/cobalt green deep. I personally don't see alot of blue in the water, but someone else may see more than I do.

In further searching, you may want to take a look at other photos of this painting. The one on Wikipedia looks like it
may have been colorized or enhanced. The colors on the same work of art at http://www.auburn.edu/~mitrege/russi...php?file=00165 show
an entirely different range of colors (although I personally like the wiki one best.

One, the wikipedia link is not what the painting looks like. Some idiot decided to crank up the saturation in photoshop. Nobody can tell you the colors are because you have to mix them to make them correctly and they can be made in a number of ways.

Then you would use a future tense, not past.

Also there are several bob ross episodes where he paints an ocean scene in similar colors. I don't know if you have any way to get access to episodes of The Joy of Painting though, it's not available to view online except by downloading an illegal torrent, and the DVDs are ridiculously expensive. But it you want the episode numbers of the most similar paintings let me know, I can tell you.
