Hi everyone! I've always loved to watch CHOW but I've never quite had the time/courage to try participating - but not anymore! I'm probably not going to be able to finish this, but we'll see Here's my sketch (she's reaching up to an invisible Perseus and I'll add the monster/water in later. Hopefully the perspective isn't too wonky...):

More rendering and color. And fatigue...oh, the fatigue! I can't really see this anymore, so any critique would certainly be appreciated.

Sadly, I had not enough time or willpower to work on it more.
The original didnt really work, so I made a lot of paint overs and came out with this piece just a moment ago. Even though I wont make it in time for the deadline I will keep working on this one. the light, the different textures and the human body/skin are so difficult.

Its still bothering me, that I dont really have a feeling for color in paintings. Its more like I see "hey, now it looks good" But I cant directly control it to get there.

Didn't have a lot of time to work on this today but free tomorrow to bring this one home. I'm especially paying for not using any reference for Andromeda because she's proving to be a real damn b*tch to paint! heh! step forward...step back...step forward...etc. Some Art Nouveau style text is gonna fill that blank bottom left space, anyone got any suggestions? otherwise i was just gonna put "Andromeda" yes fcukin original i know, heh!

dashinvaine Nice! no one can really argue that a week is to short to bust out an oil painting after seeing yours, well done man

Carnifex Looking real sweet man, i reckon you could blend the monster back a few more notches into the dark background, the tip of the nose and maybe a tiny glint of the eye would be more than enough imo, he's a bit to visible atm.

Some great looking work being produced, well done everyone!

    ~Jase

[EDIT] I chickened out and changed Andromeda's head to a position i can handle, old one although sexier was a nightmare to get looking right because of the subtle foreshortening.

Rusty, maybe you could take a line from some prose on the original story? you could even go as far as to make it a really nice typography piece. there's a great font that would work called Eccentric Standard, should be able to find it on most font sites.

here's mine so far. wish I had started sooner, but thankfully have cleared most of my weekend to finish it. still gotta work on Andromeda, her rock, chains, add the monster in the BG, etc etc etc. but I should hopefully get to colour this round.

rgeorge - i'd have the tail just bend towards her, that leads the eye better. right now it's guiding our view outside of frame, and if you just crop it,it becomes unbalanced.
rusty - thanks! i'll have to check on that. the very first plan was to only have andromeda sitting alone, the weight of the cave, the loneliness and the sun passing by,all of this weighing down on her. she's alone with her thoughts and fears.

Just about done I think. Was mostly a testcase for my Cintiq so the drawing isn't all that (especialy the legs), but all in all I'm pretty satisfied.

Nice! I think the tentacle on the left will be fine if you repaint the top to come back into the painting. Right now it leads the eye out and doesn't keep the viewer inside the image. Keep it up!

EDIT: Didn't see carnifex already answered your question with the same answer. But I guess that makes two independent opinions of the same idea.

stoph - great idea! Pretty intense, man.

pixeltuner - The lighting and color selection is quite good, and your idea is very creative. kudos!

soupandbutter - love the angle! great job and good luck.

rusty - awww, that's too bad with the face! why not just shoot a photo of yourself and adjust the features? either way, your entry is very strong. great job!

vaejoun - it might be worth it to try starting with a drawing instead of shapes. some people just work better the other way. but in the case of coloring over a greyscale image, at the very least, you can submit a b&w painting and totally be within the rules if you don't get the colors worked out in time.

Hmm, I got distracted at the middle of the week, so I don't think I'll be able to make it to the final burning. Meh, doesn't care, as long as I finish the pic!

Finished the lines and added the flat colours. The moon initially seemed a good idea, but I think I'll change it to daylight, because if I don't do so, Andromeda will be on the cast shadow of the rock, very little visible... Do you think I'm doing right?

(sorry, no crits for now, I'm too tired. I'll put them later!)

Inked it and added some vague doodles that could be waves/monsters.
    Opinions?

Sup all! Had a hectic week, so I'm cutting it really close with this one- been doing sketches all week, but could only start the painting today. Hopefully I'll get it done in time. The values and colors all look weird because I'm working on unprimed masonite, so everything's sunken it. Should look a little better when I oil it out tomorrow (I hope).

Rusty and PixelTurner, those are looking friggin' awesome!

    PLEASE REMEMBER THE NEW DEADLINE!

    Sunday (Today) 9:00 PM (GMT+1)

This means, for those of you on EST, it's 3 pm this afternoon, or in about 5 hours.

IceMoon and ArthemisIX are at MADE so I'll be doing the poll today, so it might be a bit late, but don't bank on it. If the deadline comes up , post your stuff. If you don't see me close the thread right away, then you can keep working on it a bit and replace the old version with the new one when I close the poll.

I'll try not to be too late.
