The avatar/mascot for the expo that I designed. Also used in teaser and recruitment poster...


My (first) entry for the expo, not actually finished yet. I'll also send this one to an art festival in a famous university in my country after the finishing touch, hope this will pass ;D

The characters studies were much fun, especially because all of them were the characters I love since I was a child. But the annoying part was the project dragged on until more than 1 month for me to finish it. Family problems, part-time jobs, other projects that I had to finish first, etc etc. At the end of this project I kept thinking "Hey man, this is just a simple project, but why it took you this long to finish it!!". Kinda "I had enough" feeling... but afterall this one was still very fun project from the start to the very end

And you're right about the graphic design. I often want to enter a graphic design university in my town to study more, but sometimes things like designer's slave-like job makes me doubt it

I agree when you say there are many paths in art, and that's why I keep loving art. It's unique and everyone have their own unique way

Ugh... I really want to continue the statue still-life, but the season here never make friend with me right now. It's almost rainy season and I never got a good sunlight. That's why I decided to switch to drawing simple still-life from the stuff around me right now. I'll scan and upload it when I had the chance!

Don't worry about the photo from the expo! I'll upload it even if I have to rob the photo from the expo's documentary division hehehe

Trying to give more concentration on still-life now, but I want to continue my study on anatomy and Loomis. Imagination stuff is nice too... Why there's so much fun things in drawing, and I feel confused on choosing what to draw. I want to draw them all!!!!

It's kinda disappointing for me, because since the 2-weeks-without-drawing I think I slack off and not drawing as much as before. Those 2 weeks sure hurt me much. Still trying to build again the momentum to draw more and more!

Well, I do like how the buildings turn out to be, but it was a real hard work to finished. So I think I won't do something like that in near future, unless I begin to learn about concepting the environmental hehehe

I also love those cute characters. It's always so much fun for me to draw them. I'm planning to make a short-comic (maybe 2-3 pages) with cutie characters and "child storybook" style!

That last one is a very striking picture. On the Loomis studies, you're not making the hips wide enough when you put the flesh on.

Hey BluezAce, thanks for stopping by my SB.

You've done a really superb job on that Expo poster with all the many characters on it. Its really top-notch.

Hmmm....as for advice well, the biggest thing I can see you need to work on right now is probably proportions.

You have a very clean and neat line style, which isn't a bad thing, but it seems like it can hold you too rigidly.
One thing I haven't really seen at all from you is gesture drawings. Of course I don't post my gestures generally,
either, because they look like crap but you do need to do them.

Another thing I've noticed you do a lot is exact copies of instructional drawings (Bridgman, Loomis, etc.) I would
say you really need to avoid that in, but instead, try to immediately apply the principles in your own way to a
scenario of your own invention. For me at least, understanding comes from application and analysis, not from copying.

On the other hand when you really take your time drawing from life, I see you get some really good results. You
should be doing much more of this. For figurative work, if you don't have life-drawing opportunities in your area,
maybe get some good photographic references. There are some 'books of models' out there that often include a
great CD or DVD where you can rotate the models 360 degrees, this is a great tool!

One more thing...how many hours a day / a week to you spend drawing, I mean actually moving the pencil
on paper? You seem to have a pretty good tempo going right now, but I was curious how many hours you have
committed to drawing regularly.

Good work, man keep it up, and work on those proportions (you may want to check out the work of Michael Mentler
on this forum for help on that).

PS: almost forgot something I meant to say: don't worry so much about anatomy.

Once you get a good grasp of the basic volumes and proportions, anatomy is a detail that can be layered on top of
everything else. Now of course, you do want to learn the basic structure so that the appearance of the human body
isn't such a mystery, but I would say concentrate on large forms and not individual muscles. If you're going to study
anatomical details, concentrate on the bones, especially the joints. Once you have a good grasp of that, the muscles
sort of fall into place around the bones, based on their attachment points. Also, the joints and bony parts that protrude
through the flesh give you your best landmarks and a guideline for dimensionality, direction, foreshortening....all the 3D
elements of proportion and form.

I like to see a variety of styles that you can handle. Personally, i find that the solours as on the flower mascot are a bit to mat, with hard shadows etc. Always gave me the sense of a fake coloured thing. Don;t get me wrong, i am only talking about the colours on thiw one. Also, BludHund gave you some precious advices. Keep up and take care.

It turned out that it's hard to find the time to scan most of my sketches/drawings!! So I'll just post the drawings that I did yesterday and the day before


Finally I had the chance to do a bargue drawing!



These are some things I noticed when I drew it:
- This was my first time to do bargue drawing. Before this, I always measured by my eyes alone and tried "feel" the size/shape. Maybe because of that, sometimes it kind of "frustrating" for me to use "tool" (thread) to measure something. I think it was just because I haven't familiarized with this method yet.

- When I drew the first 3 eyes, I just realized that I didn't really understand how exactly sight-size measuring was. But after those 3 eyes I experimented, and later when I read an old archive in my laptop it turned out that my experiment was pretty much correct

- My hands kinda "shaking" when I held my arms straight and it was hard to maintain a stable/still measuring. But after the first 6 eyes, I usually got more accurate mark after 4 or 5 attempt of measuring. And yeah... sometimes I after I was sure I put the mark correctly, I used a ruler to double-check it (not in the purpose to "correct" the mark placement, but just checking my accuracy)

- When I made the individual eyes, it didn't really hard to make correct measuring for size and shape (only missed one or few millimeter when I compare it). But when I compare the "bigger picture" (the whole drawing), some of individual eyes had pretty much correct size/shape but the placement missed around one centimeter.

- I only realized that the horizontal line between the eyes weren't the same after the first 9 eyes. I think that was why mostly the measuring didn't match when I hold the "bigger picture"...



Haven't get a good success yet in this drawing. As it turned out when I stacked the paper to see it (these two are just more-or-less visualization of my unsuccessful drawing, not the real drawing. But it pretty much like these)

Actually I did the bargue drawing in 2 sheet of A4 paper (A3 = 2xA4). Well, actually I want to do it in A3 but it was hard for me to carry around A3 sketchbook, so I did it in 2 x A4 paper...

I want to redo the bargue drawing until it's more accurate!!!


The last is my t-shirt design for me and my friend's project. It is representing a battle technique from the main protagonist of anime "One Piece". Actually I did few more for the other characters, but I still have to rework it because it didn't turned out well in t-shirt >.<

Do you really recommend do the the Bargue drawings? Because I'd heard of them but not sure if it's that helpful/seems tedious to set up.
