Studies on male anatomy (torso), I used some reference on these.
I guess I should do some studies on pen and paper also, it's just a lot easier and more fun on Photoshop

A couple of Piratey environments!
This first one was pretty effortless and I had a good groove while making it, took about an hour to make
The second enviro below was maybe a bit forced, so it didn't come out as nice.

The Earthgod's sanctum, a place for worship.
This was a pretty quick environment sketch, maybe I'll add some worshippers and sacrifices like food and drink (left for the earthgod).
Here's a few object rendering practises, done using these actual objects for reference (duh!):
The faithful canon for my photos.
And a drinking glass with some liquid in it (no, it doesn't contain alcohol)
Appreciate some crits and tips![]()
yeah ever since i discovered photoshop i havnt picked up a pencil, studyings a lot more fun this way. your anatomy form studys look great, now play with more color variation. paint a man lit by diffent lights and stuff. use more contrast in the value, go dark. ad a unsharpen mask at the end for flavor, unless your against it. do you have massive or gnomon tutorials? get some. i learned alot in 6months.
Thanks for dropping in. I have some massive tutorials wich are really helpful indeed, and I think i should get some more of them.
I agree and I have noticed the same thing. After finishing a piece I usually notice afterwards that it could use a lot more deeper/darker shadows and also some color variation. Got to work on it more..
If you're worried about getting a bigger range of values, don't forget that if you've got a piece you're working on in color you can always temporarily convert it to greyscale to check your scale of values.![]()
Thanks fo the tip Amarok, I'll put it in to use for my next piece
Hands and feet from reference.

Thumbnail's of some action pose silhouettes. I tried to get the characters to read from the silhouette only, hopefully I succeeded. I also tried to be quick about it but it took a bit too long, I guess speed will improve eventually by training.

This is a study on somewhat simplified human measures.
Redlined some stuff to help me remember the proportions between different bodyparts and also the placement of some.
I used an anatomy book for reference on this one.
Wow, great job, all of this stuff looks pretty amazing. Specifically i like the silhouettes, they look pretty professional. The human measures woman looks perfect, completely symmetrical for side and front view. Your well on your way to being a great artist, keep at it! Frankly, i wish i had your talent, haha.
I really am digging your piratey environments. Your skintones and most things look monochromatic at this point though with highlights and shadows being in the same hue. Lighting is tough. A good rule of thumb is that if the light source is warm, the shadows should be cool and vice versa. It will really make your paintings pop.

Shiroboi: Ye, lighting and color is really tough. I think I need some basic value training before diving into the world of color, I found a good book that someone in CA pointed out, it's on the internet and it's called "Creative illustration" by Andrew Loomis. There's some good stuff on value/tone and color.
Seamus: They all took a bit too much time for what they are though.![]()
I feel I have improved some but there's a zillion things to learn, and a long way to go. Not to mention traditional painting, way harder than digital.
I'm glad to see there's some activity in my sketchbook, thanks again fellas!
I just read the tone chapter on Andrew Loomis's book: "Creative Illustrations" and that was very enlightening so I started out some tone/value studies and I'm gonna try and do plenty of these from now on.
The helmet was a lot of fun but I'm not sure if it was that good of a study subject on tone.
The photo of Old town in Krakow was challenging, and the perspective is a bit off but I think it gave me more while I struggled with it.

Great human studies!man ,keep it up!You will become strong!
LAL
Thanks, I'll try and work on it.
Great thread so far, my friend! You're doing all of the right things. You just need to keep plugging away at it! Try to maybe keep areas of your studies loose and then tighten up areas you want to draw the eye to. I'll keep watching and looking forward to seeing more from you! Take care.
thanks for the tip Zebz
Seems I have been into landscapes and environments lately so here's a bunch of them in order of appearance.
The first try for a gift to my mom, these ended up a bit too cartoony and tropical.
Lothlorien challenge entry
A personal perspective study/training. I'm hoping to improve and finish this when I have the time (maybe next week)
And finally the second try for my mom's gift. I tried a more painterly feel for these and I'm quite happy with the result.
I think I'm done for sea-themed landscapes for now, jeez!
HEy there!
Nice stuff, the enviros are the best, they have a lot of atmosphere and mood to them!Keep it up!

Thanks Dsmith, I'll try and work on them.
Still need some more depth to the shadows and especially the rocks need more referencing and work.
Been too busy for posting lately but here goes!
I got inspired by a viking book of Bernard Cornwell "The pale horseman". There was a character in it called Svein of the white horse. I noticed the similarity to Riders of Rohan afterwards with the flag and all.
My aim was color practice and also to get a feeling of weight and presence to the character.
EDIT: remind me never to draw chain mail again(actually it wasn't so bad after checking out daarken's wonderful tutorial of chain)
Thought I'd give it a go since everyone else is doing it!
The wips
And here is the final pic, it could have used a bit more depth in the shadows perhaps?
I guess I look too young and not shaggy enough in the finished portrait.. but what the hey!

WW1 environment, tried to get a feeling of a cold morning/evening on the shift

Hey!
Nice paintings in here.
Your studies are looking really great. Keep them definitely up!
I would suggest to do a few speed photo studies to get a nice feeling for the mood and the point of a picture.
Greetings, Sil
Thanks for dropping in and thank you for the tips!
Environment training, trying to make the mountain pass feel "big". Also I was trying to get the mood right.
