    Jonnydangero.us - A Digital Topiary

My journey to get sharper with digital work, and to stay sharp with it through observational sketches from photo reference, branching off into caricature and imagination works. Newest works on the last page, of course!

Thank you Martell.Joshua, good luck on your journey!

Today's are Juliet and Sawyer. I got off to a late start today and spent way more time on these than I thought I would.

    Today's were Richard and Kate

These were both pretty quick ones. Richard's is a little off and Kate's is exaggerated, but they came out pretty well.

    Sketchdump-last LOST

Got behind on posting. These were the rest of the LOST drawings I did right up to the finale, doing 2 per day. All in Alias Sketchbook.

    Post-LOST warmups sketchdump

These were most of my one-a-day warmups and sketches after LOST ended. I clamped the time on some of these down to about an hour, but some ended up being closer to 2.

Doing the Lost characters looked like fun. It also helps that you got some skills. How long does it take you to do one?

Nice work! You're definitely able to capture the likeness of people I think your work with brush strokes needs improvement though. I would use more hard brushes and use the strokes do define the forms more. Keep it up though!

    Thanks guys

    vatteh-
most of them i try to keep around an hour, but for some it was 2, and for a couple like sawyer, it was closer to 3.

    jackpot_anjr90-
Thanks for the brushstroke advice. For almost all of them I was using Alias Sketchbook, so my choices were quite limited. I just switched to using Photoshop for these starting with Kat Dennings today, and I was experimenting a little more with hard brushes now that I have more options, but it's definitley something I need to explore more.

    The Chin

Thanks, Corza. I was starting to use a few hard brushes on her, but for today's warmup I decided to experiment more with them, and found a good one of Bruce Campbell via Evil Dead 2 with lots of awesome shadow and blood shapes in the face to lay into. I kept this one real sketchy, as i'm still getting used to the hard brushes. I might come back to this later once some more of my portfolio is done.

    Sketchdump

Again behind on posting. tsk tsk.

Some of the more refined ones took close to 2 hrs, some of the realy quick and dirty ones are 45 min. I've been doing a lot more with hard brushes in PS, and playing with opacity.

Awesome persistence, keep it up~! I think this is a great way to get a better grasp of digital painting and facial structures at the same time. I should take a page out of your book!

    The Gmork

Thanks to an online competition, I fell behind on daily sketches. This is the Gmork, the last of my Neverending Story Sketches. My next batch will probably be Casablanca.

    The start of Casablanca week

This week's sketches are (mostly) Casablanca with a dash of something else.

Stared it off with Bogart's Rick, but just saw Predators, and decided to do one for that before drawing last night's Claude Raines-Louis Renault.

    Cheers!

    Caricatured Victor

@ Nenad- Thanks, it's a pleasure to do them!

@Chr. Steam - Thanks, I had a lot of fun with the LOST drawings.

Today I decided to push some caricature a bit, and move beyond just observational work, so here's Paul Henreid's Victor Laszlo from Casablanca.

Next one will probably be a caricatured Peter Lorre.

When I said I'd never leave you...

Today is a straightforward Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergaman). Tomorrow will be Sydney Greenstreet, followed by Major Strausser, and then I'll wrap up Casablanca week with Sam.

A Satchmo and a Dark Helmet

Playing around with some new brushes, came up with a Louis Armstrong, and afterward, started off Spaceballs week with a caricatured Rick Moranis' Dark Helmet.
